Just what I expected

Rating:****
This is a great rack. It's a different construction than the other bike racks I used in the past as it just has one pivot point and the bottom and side straps are actually just two straps that run from the bottom of the truck lid, through the rack, and then to the side of the trunk lid. It worked best on my Mazda 626 so that the bikes are held high. It looks a little funny but I can leave the front wheel of my mountain bike on during transit and not worry about it hitting the ground. Also this rack has the bike stability feature that holds the middle tube of the frame for, well, better stability. I've had no problems with the rack looking or feeling like it was going to fall off my car and I've put it through some rigorous tests on back roads [...]

Great for carrying one bike

Rating:****
I usually ride 2/3 times a week and find this rack extremely quick and easy to take on and off my trunk for each ride. I drive an '07 Altima and find this rack fits my car and mountain bike pretty well as long as I only put one bike on. I tried putting two on and the bike closest to my car scratched it. I adjusted the rack several times and never found a position that kept the bike from scratching my car. So, I just keep one bike on it and it works fine.

Satisfied!

Rating:****
I love my bike, but I don't love installing bike racks! I'm quite a girl when it comes to things like this, but even I made it work. At times, the installation instructions were confusing--it was hard to decipher what straps the pictures and steps were referring to. It took me a while, but the result was worth it. I safely got my bike home without a scratch to my car! It's durable and reasonably priced. And the best part is now I can bring my bike with me when I travel! :)

Works great

Rating:*****

I got this bike rack after my old one failed me and dropped my bike on the highway! It was a cheap one and I've been wanting to replace it but now I am forced to get a new bike too. Needless to say it would have cost me a lot less if I had gotten this bike rack earlier! This bike rack is very easy to use and is secure. I've been very happy with the quality of the construction. Safety first!

Solid!

Rating:****
I purchased a King Joe 3, but it didn't stay on my car's trunk. I exchanged it for the Super Joe 2, and I couldn't be happier. This is definitely a case where less is more.

Install was a snap and it fit much more securely than the King Joe ever did.

My only complaint is that the strap buckles seem a bit flimsy. They'll do for now, but overtime they could be an issue.

So Far, So Good

Rating:****
With a small hatchback car, this rack fits perfect. Its solid, my road bike doesn't budge. The only issue I had was that when mounted, the bike's rear tire sits really high, level with the handlebars. Where that was a problem was when mounting a second bike (facing the opposite direction) the bars hit the other bike's rear tire. I could still mount it, but I'd feel better if they both rested naturally. Otherwise, great product.

Works great so far

Rating:****
Haven't had any trouble yet but have only had it a month. The newly designed rack uses rubber straps and the mounts are firmly attached so some of the earlier flaws have been fixed. Only problem I could see is if your bike had an odd geometry it would be tough to mount on this rack. Also tough to mount a womens and a mens bike at the same time.

Nicest trunk rack ever

Rating:*****
I've owned/borrowed several examples of this type of rack, and this is the best. It sets up easily, and thanks to the seat tube clamp, the bike is literally immovable. On extended trips, the straps will loosen a bit, so be sure to check them when you stop for lunch or whatever. Oh yeah: I can also open my trunk with the rack (and even with the bike) installed. Nice!

Solid Rack

Rating:****
A great overall rack that installed in less than 20 minutes. Its very solidly built and fits well on the trunk of my car. The only minor problem is that the sides of my car trunk are not completely vertical. They come down at angle and so the side straps tend slide down over time.

Yakima super joe 2

Rating:****

I found the best deal on the super joe 2 here. Its a good bike rack but the only concern I have is if you have a car with a average size trunk its hard to fit two mountain bikes on the super joe 2. Overall its a good deal and a good rack.

Negative Reviews:

bad purchase :(

Rating:*
this rack was a huge disappointment. first of all, the velcro straps are hardly reliable. they weather easily in the rain and wind, and don't provide a secure hold on the bike. also, two of the rubber pieces that hold the velcro have snapped from the pressure of securing the straps tightly. another problem is that when i ride on the highway, my bike flaps in the wind. if i have a passenger, i usually have to them "spot" the bikes, to make sure they don't fly off the back of the car! many times, the wind causes the bike to inch towards the end of the poles, which puts a lot of weight at the least stable point of the rack. also, over time, the straps that secure the rack to the trunk loosen, and are hard to re-secure. i have basically had to tie a series of complicated knots in the straps to keep the rack in place. for the avid rider, this rack is definitely not a good choice!

A Let Down

Rating:*
Initially, the Yakima name was enough to give me high expections for my new bike rack. Unfortunately, I could not get my mountain bike to remain stable at any speeds over 45 mph. One of the cradles the bike sits upon would wiggle all the way to the end, making the bike extremely unstable. The rubber straps continually came undone during transit, and I found myself having to pull over every 15 minutes to resecure the bike. The rack itself fits the car easily and setup is a breeze, but there was no way that I could keep the bike stable. I don't know if the rack I owned was defective, or if this is common. I was definitely using the rack correctly. On my 3rd and final use of the rack, I nearly lost my bike. I returned the rack and went with a different one.

Beware of gusty winds

Rating:**

I recently gave up my $20 bike rack to a friend who needed to drive cross country and thought I would upgrade.

I found this rack to be much more complicated and had difficulty maneuvering the angle of rack with the outside triggers.

While driving on the open road which was relatively windy I saw that the bike was bouncing. I pulled over and tightened the straps, but a few minutes later my bike was no longer visible. Luckily or unluckily, I had the front tire strapped to the frame and my bike was dragged along the road.

I am definitely going back to my old rack where the straps go through the buckle and are less likely to flip off with jostling.

Doesn't work

Rating:*
Says it will fit my Lexus GS350 on the fit test, but they forgot the 07' trunk closes automatically and when it thinks there is something in the way (bottom strap), it doesn't close, therefore, it doesn't fit! Maybe good for another make/model.
slammer21 at REI on 05/08/2008

hangs too low

Rating:*

Hung way too low on my Nissan Sentra, the front tire ended up in front of my exhaust pipe and would have ended up blowing.
