Minn Kota 55 Terrova With I-Pilot Wireless Gps Trolling System And Foot Pedal Reviews:

Reviews:

Love this motor!

I bought this combo because I wanted the best system with the iPilot capability. An easy install (4 bolts and the power cables), and I was on the water. The iPilot exceeded all my expectations. I just love being able to hit the "anchor" button, and having the boat stay where it is (within a few feet) as if I just set anchor. Here in our canyon lakes the water can be as deep as 250 feet, and setting two real anchors will kill your back and arms after the first spot. But with this, it is just a matter of pressing a single button and you're done with it. You do have to be a bit careful that the spot-lock is accepted. One time I hit the spot lock right after deploying the motor, and I guess it hadn't got a GPS lock yet because it didn't engage. It doesn't really tell you if it fails, which I think is a design flaw. I only found out after noticing I was drifting alarmingly close to shore. So now after hitting spot lock I wait to see if the display stops flashing before I put the remote down and start fishing. The only other feature I tried is the auto-pilot, and it also worked perfectly, keeping me on-track and compensating for a 25mph crosswind. The Terrova trolling motor itself works perfectly well. I've never tried the PowerDrive, so I can't say how it compares, but I like that the deploy only takes pushing down on one lever. Stowing it a bit more involved, in that you have to push the lever and grab the motor head and pull up. Then you have to slide the collar down and lock it in place. I've seen horror stories of people that have had their motors accidentally deploy while at full speed, so I always make sure that the collar is fully tight. Someday I'll rig up a velcro hold-down like I had on my old trolling motor, which should be a lot easier to use. And battery life is great -- I've used the motor all day (mix of spot-lock and moving the boat around) and never discharged my battery below 50%. I have a 16' deep-v aluminum boat which is pretty light, so I'm sure that's a factor. The new remotes are a lot better than the old ones, which I've heard had a tendency to have the covers come apart. These are individual buttons, and are well marked. I don't even use the foot pedal anymore, as it's so much easier to just use the remote (which I can do from anywhere in the boat).

Awesome Piece of Equipment--make fishing painless!

I used to have a Motorguide electric trolling motor, until this year--The ease and convenience of deploying the Minn Kota is amazing. It uses very little battery in comparison to my old motor. The controller for the system makes fishing much more relaxed. Being able to anchor over a spot that there is interesting bottom or fishing are laying--is such a cool feature.
