Best piece in my closet

I would buy this in every color if I could afford to! I am 5'5", 112lb, 32A lean build & I bought one in XS & and one in S and both fit great, but for different purposes. The XS is more fitted, but I still have room if I wanted to layer a tank/t-shirt/ or light long-sleeve underneath. It zips up without strangling either. The S I wear when I want to layer a thicker long-sleeve underneath or my capilene 3 half-zip up. I wash in cold water & hang dry to extend its life & it always comes out looking new. I've never put it in the dryer so I don't know how it does in the dryer. I wear mine for rock climbing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and dog-walking & it's perfect every time.

This is definitely my favorite patagonia baselayer. It's incredibly warm without the bulk. The offset zipper is a great feature and when it's really cold I'll pull the hood up under my helmet - it's bit snug, but I sized my helmet to fit without a hat or hood - and zip up the collar all the way up and pair it with the Patagonia Nano-Puff under my Gore-Tex Shell for some serious warmth.
Like everything else patagonia, the construction is stellar and this is definitely an investment that will last you SEVERAL seasons.
Fit is slim and long, so if you plan on layering underneath this you'll want to size up. If you wear it over just a t-shirt or tank, stick with your normal size.

Thin, but warm. The R1 is great on its own in the spring and fall and is a perfect layer in the winter. I've used it hiking, running, and climbing. It has a slim fit--a long sleeve tee fits perfect underneath, but a sweater would not. The fabric is sleek, but the fabric on the palm is starting to show a little wear. I also have to be careful when climbing on southern sandstone because it has a sandpaper quality that will shred any fabric. The balaclava is designed really well--the angled zipper keeps it from pressing on the bridge of the nose. The only thing I wished it had is two side hand pockets. It's also pricy, but for its intended purpose, it's great.

Great all round functional clothes

I am a ski patroler, land surveyor and farmer. I run, swim and bike for exercise. Your clothes are the best for all these things. I use the new clothes for skiing and working out. Thereafter I hand them down to my survey work clothes and then to my farming clothes. I ski and work out in them for 2 years, survey with then 2 more years and then farm with them. Our sheep are meat sheep so they don't feel bad about me trading my woolies for your clothes. Thanks for making well fitting, functional womens clothes!! :)

My favorite pullover

The R1 Pullover goes everywhere with me. It is the most versatile technical piece that I own. It is great as an insulating piece when it is really cold or as a stand alone fleece in mild weather. The deep zipper is great for venting! The micro-grid fleece traps heat very well. It is very comfortable, as well! My husband and I both love ours!

LOVE IT

I have an older model off this top and loved it. It won't wear out. But, needed another. This is a slightly different style and cut than the 4 year old one I have. The sleeves are more raglan but the waist is a little more fitted. The color is a bright orange but not to gaudy. Really warm and not hot when inside.
gearlover at Patagonia on 04/27/2013

Slim fit makes this more of a first layer

I have an R1 jacket from 2012 and the fit was looser so it could layer nicely. I love the color of this pullover and it is a great first layer but feels tight if I try to layer it over a shirt. This feels more like a Small than a Medium. I am 5'7" and 132 lbs and always order a M.
MJF201 at Patagonia on 02/08/2014

Awesome Layer

I love Patagonia's R1! It is the perfect mid insulating layer. It fits perfectly over long underwear but is still slim enough to put a down layer on top of. The fabric is think and holds its shape well. I also wear it out casually quite a bit. I love technical pieces that can also be worn everyday :)

Gret layering piece

Finally decided to replace my 10 year old R-1. Great layering piece for those cool mornings/evenings or cold days. Fits well. My only complaint (and it's a small one) is that the sleeves are a bit long. I did buy a medium as I don't like my layers to be snug fitting. I'm 5'6", 118 lbs.
TrekkerNP at Patagonia on 09/28/2013

Love the R1!

Of all my Patagonia gear, this is my favorite item. It's warm but not suffocating, perfect fit, and I wear it daily. I haven't put it to test in truly frigid weather, but during my travels, it did a more than adequate job of keeping me warm in mild to chilly temps. Very durable!

Pilling

I bought this pullover in black 11 days ago. After wearing it one day, I had to return to Patagonia because I noticed it was pilling on both sleeves. I opted to exchange it for another one, in case only that particular pullover was defective. After wearing the second one for two days, I noticed the same thing was happening to the sleeves again, so I returned it for a refund this morning. I own a few older models of this, and have never had a problem with a Patagonia product before. I'm not sure what was changed in the fabric this season, but for some reason the two that I have had in less than two weeks, are not wearing well at all. I hope this gets resolved so I can buy a new one.

Disappointed

I bought an R1 pullover in 2006 and it was my favorite piece of clothing. It held up well and I would be wearing it today, except my washing machine ate it. I ordered a new one (same size) from Patagonia this year and it seems like their sizing has changed. The small I received was much more bulky and less form fitting than the original. I am 5'8" and 130lbs, small curves. I even laid them out and you can see the 2006 R1 is much smaller than the 2012 R1. The newer fabric also felt cheaper and the sewing is slightly different than the old style. Patagonia, why change a good thing??
NWclimbergirl at Patagonia on 02/15/2013

Disappointed In Fit Again

I have three R1 pullovers that I purchased in 2005,2006 and 2008. I love them and the fit is perfect. (I wear an XS) However, when I ordered one last year and this year they both bunched in the back at the bottom of the neck and along the shoulders. Since my others don't it is clearly in the styling and/or making of the garment. I returned them both years. If you get one of these make sure to check this out. Patagonia, please figure this glitch out or consider returning to what was a perfect fit.

No longer worth the premium price tag

I have a 2005 R1 pullover that is still going strong, but have been looking to add to my collection. This year, a raglan sleeve cut (my preferred, as it pairs well with a backpack) made a comeback, so I have decided to give it a try. I have consciously overlooked the fact that the chest pocket has disappeared from a 2013 edition, even though it is present on a men's version (women clearly do not need it for small items such as keys, credit cards, etc, right, Patagonia?), that the zipper has moved to the center instead of slightly off-center, and that the material is no longer a combination of R1 and mirco R1, which made the original so unique. The new R1 pullover is not bad piece of clothing, but I will not be keeping it for two reasons: 1) the neck of the pullover is too high, about 1.5cm higher than the Adze jacket in size S, for example, and 2) it is much boxier than a 2005 edition. In my opinion, women's R1 pullover is also no longer worth the premium price tag with the alterations Patagonia made. The verdict? Buy it on sale if you do not have one and want it; keep your old one and enjoy it if you have the pullover already.

Waiting...

I have two r1 pullovers from several years ago and wear them every day in the Fall and winter. I wear them to walk the dogs, practice dog agility and just hang out in the house. I have wanted to add another one BUT - the older model has a band around the hips which make it a nice close fit and is very attractive. The sleeves have the band too. The current version is boxier and not nearly as attractive. I notice that the current Men's hoody has the bands but I don't want a hoody.
Please, please Patagonia, bring back the earlier style. It is so much more attractive.
PeggyJoy at Patagonia on 11/09/2013

Bring back the pocket

I love my older version of this fleece that had the pocket and a slimmer fit. That fleece is PERFECT! This new version, just average.
