Patagonia R1 Full-Zip Jacket -

The Patagonia Men’s R1 Full-Zip Jacket is a natural evolution from their hugely popular R1 Pullover. At 12.7 ounces, the Patagonia R1 Full-Zip Jacket makes a great stand alone jacket in cool temps and the microfiber face makes it a perfect layering piece when you start seeing your own breath. Patagonia teamed up with Polartec to make the high/low grid pattered Polartec Power Dry fleece more breathable and more compressible than ever before. A small amount of spandex gives this 41% recycled Patagonia men’s fleece jacket some stretch to make reaching for the next hold or hailing a cab a little easier. The offset shoulder seams make carrying a pack super cush, and the two zippered handwarmer pockets steer clear of the harness line, making the Patagonia R1 an extremely versatile piece. You’ll see this Patagonia men’s fleece jacket hiking in the woods, resting apres style in a ski lodge and strolling through the city on a brisk fall day.

It stretches, breathes, wicks and warms - no wonder so many serious trail and mountain athletes use and abuse Patagonia's R1 styles. And the full-zip front makes it even more versatile, from a midlayer in winter to a lightweight jacket on early fall mornings and alpine summer evenings. Positive Reviews:

Go-to technical fleece for all conditions

Have had several R1's over the years and was in need of a new full-zip. Overall, still a great piece that will see year-round use as a light jacket for summer and a key insulator for cold-weather use. The new R1 fits a bit slimmer, and is longer in body and arms. The addition of thumb loops and a lighter fabric for the lower forearms is functional and has been great so far for cool-weather bike commuting. The neck/collar has been revised as well, with the same lighter/less bulky grid fleece as the forearms. Still the same excellent breathability and quick dry times. Only "hmmm..." is the way the shoulder seams are on this new version - seems like they are placed where pack straps sit?

Odd Fit

I usually wear a Patagonia large, I'm 6'1" 188 lbs, size 33 waist. I purchased the Medium R1 zip which had the correct length and sleeves, and I have long arms and a long torso, however it feels more like a slim fit base layer in the shoulders than a jacket. Layering with a Cap 1 or Cap 2 base layer and a shell keeps me plenty warm on Pacific Northwest high output activities. By the way, the slimmer fit reduces bulk, so if you are a lean athlete, this might be the fit for you.

Patagonia is slowly replacing my entire wardrobe. I bought this as a lightweight baselayer for cold weather running and cool weather moderate exertion activities, such as evening or morning hiking, outdoor climbing, etc. It has now replaced all my sweatshirts as my go-to casual wear around town as well. It's about as warm as a hoodie but not as bulky and way more sophisticated. And the lining is so soft I wear it at home too. Pretty much good for everything.

Good lightweight jacket

I use this jacket either by itself or under a water-proof shell depending upon the conditions. It seems to be best for active pursuits as it breathes well and is only moderately insulative. It is fitted so it goes best on top of a base layer. It may not work well going over a typical shirt. I am a size 41 chest in most clothes and the medium fits me without any loose material.

"A great part of my layering system."

I used the Patagonia R1 as part of my layering system on a recent backpacking trip into the Chicago Basin in Colorado. The full-zip jacket made it easy to take on and off and to zip down to cool down. The jacket dried quickly inside my tent and was ready to go again the next morning. I believe Patagonia makes some great gear. I would definitely recommend buying this jacket.

I take my R1 with me wherever I go. From home to work it is often the insulating layer (reinforced with the Torrentshell jacket in cool / wet weather) on a long bike ride; in the mountains it wicks away my sweat without giving up on my core temperature. Packable and amazingly soft, I can't be found without my R1.
mrwordsmith at OutdoorPlay.com on 07/11/2012
The R1 is great. Form fitting, but not skin tight. It is a great layering tool, or even perfect for a light jacket in clear conditions without wind... I use it for both. Material is very soft and comfortable. Breathes very nicely.
azrockclimber at OutdoorPlay.com on 07/11/2012

a well-constructed, minimalist jacket

good for layering, but you might want to get something heavier for cold weather

Negative Reviews:

More like a short dress

I previously tried on an older R1 jacket. I loved it, but unfortunately I didn't have money at the time to buy. Recently, I went to my local outfitter to buy one, and was really disappointed to find that Patagonia redesigned the jacket. The newer model was so long. It looked like I was wearing a short dress. I don't know what's going on with Patagonia, but it seems like they are designing their clothes specifically for people with extremely long torsos. This is not the only time I have had this problem with a Patagonia product.
primesuspect79 at Patagonia on 01/06/2014

girly look

Really hate their slimmed down look to this R1. Loved my older one but these new ones are for the birds.

Neutral Reviews:

Overpriced - even at the sale price

Based on comments I heard, I expected this garment to be warmer. I think of it as a sweatshirt with a front zip and high neck. A synthetic hoodie would be less expensive and warmer.
