very sturdy outdoor chair

I bought this as a general purpose outdoor chair for camping and other outdoor events. The frame of the chair is made of thick metal and feels very sturdy. The body of the chair also feels very well made. It has 2 cup holders plus a pouch hanging down off the side of the chair to hold a phone, wallet, keys, or anything else you might want to keep handy. The chair comes with a convenient carrying case.

I'm 6' tall and think that this chair fits me fine. I also tried the standard REI Camp Chair and it seemed a little too small.

The only downside to this chair is that it is fairly large, even when folded up. REI lists the chair's weight as 10 lbs. which isn't that heavy, but it certainly isn't light either compared to some of the smaller chairs REI sells.

I'm still giving it 5 stars though because the size and weight aren't that big of a problem to me. You'll have to try the chair out to see if the size and weight are an issue.

Nice home base for a festival or trip

I have used the chair camping and while volunteering at a festival. It was great while camping, but it really shined at the festival.

Between the large cup holders and storage pouch on the side, I was able to store all the things I needed for the day in my chair so I didn't have to go out to the car all the time.

The one complaint I have is that it's not very comfortable. The front legs are just narrow enough that they put pressure on my legs in a weird way that becomes painful after a while. I feel like if it were an inch wider or an inch narrower that it would be much more comfortable.

It's heavy duty so you don't have to be delicate with it. I can't count the number of times I have fallen through cheap light-weight chairs. I bought this one because I didn't want that to happen again!

Get ready to save your seat.

Get ready to fight for your seat. Every time that I got up to stoke the fire, go to the cooler, or grab something from my tent, somebody would take my seat. They preferred this chair to their own. It's almost like having a love seat to yourself. It's pretty sturdy. All of the seams and connections are more durable than folding chairs found else where. That's what sold me on this chair. Plus REI backs up it's gear.
There are only two minor cons. One would be my preference for a higher back. But it's so comfy that I'll get over it. Two would be one of the plastic grommets have shown signs of wear after my second trip with it. I'm a bigger boy, and I'm hoping it's just settling in. If not, I'm sure REI will back up this otherwise excellent product.

The "Xtra" is for "Xtra comfy!"

My wife and I spent a day searching for camp chairs and REI turned out to have solutions for both our criteria. This is the chair she settled on - she describes it as a "chair-and-a-half for camping." It's roomy enough for her plus one of our kids to sit on, and with a weight rating of 400lbs (400? INSANE!), we're not worried about it falling apart any time soon.

The only down-side (not necessarily a "con"), could be that the enormously oversized cup holders don't hold small beverages very well (eg. a beer bottle).

The bag is roomy enough to get the chair in and out easily, and it feels like a much sturdier construction than the "sporting store" variety.

"Big Mans Chair"

This chair was a replacement of my old chair.

Mind you this the perfect chair for a man my size 6'5" / 260 lbs.

Believe me I shopped and looked hard for my replacement. This is a little pricy but you have no good choice.

If you go cheap you get less durability, style, bag cover flimsy, and features.

All in all the chair is comfortable with the side pouch as a extra for your book, flashlight, storage, etc.

This is definitely not a back packing chair, I use the REI Trail Stool for that.

Other than that I would recommend it any where else you go.

Sturdy and Comfortable

I was looking for a fold-up chair that won't break quickly. This chair meets that requirement very well. I'm impressed with the sturdy construction. It's also roomy - more than I needed.

On the negative side, these are quite a bit heavier than the inexpensive fold-up chairs sold at discount stores. I was hoping for a chair back that was high enough to also be a headrest. This chair back isn't that tall. I can slide down in the chair and lean my head back, but that wouldn't be comfortable for long events.

Overall it's a good chair.

Great Purchase!

I bought the first chair to replace a chair that broke, the husband requested a more comfortable chair if possible. This is it! This chair is wider and deeper than your average chair in a bag. I liked it so much I ordered one for myself too. The beverage holder is a little tricky to use.

Best Big Boy Chair

This chair replaced an older version of a popular XL Chair. It is so much more comfortable, and the cup holders are great. We love the pocket that is attached to the side of the chair. We bought one, went camping and bought another on the way home. We love both of them!!!!!

Great chair

I use this when I go car camping or outdoor festivals. Very sturdy and comfortable with nice features. I am six feet tall and 190 pounds and it could shrink a few inches without effecting my comfort. If you are bigger, you'll really appreciate the size.

love it

I love this chair. I'm 5'3" and have a hard time finding a really comfortable chair thats not too deep. This fits me perfect. But my husband who is 6' loves his as well.. :)

Negative Reviews:

Disappointed in quality

Based on good reviews, I bought this as a gift for my wife. I thought the pieces of cracked plastic molding in the store model were an anomaly. Unfortunately, bad plastic popped up again. The band around the cup holder on my chair was cracked and broken out of the bag the first time.

My wife immediately noted the cup holders are too big for a can of pop.
