Positive Reviews:

Awesome sturdy low cut hiker

I purchased this shoe for summer hiking and backpacking and it has served me well. I prefer a low top shoe but I needed something sturdy enough to handle tough terrain while carrying a 50lb backpack. The sales rep where I bought these said he knew someone who wore these on a through hike of the PCT and this was the only low top he would trust for rigorous backpacking. After 60+ trail miles I don't think I would ever need any other shoe. They are the most comfortable shoes I own and If I could afford a second pair I'd wear one around town on any rainy Portland day.

REI lists these as trail runners. I don't trail run but I seriously doubt that is this shoes intended purpose. They are super stiff on the botton. This is great when you need to step yourself and a heavy pack up a step using only the shoes' toebox. I don't see how that would come into play "trail running". I have to think there are lighter more flexible shoes that would be much better for that purpose. For fastpacking though, OK, Yes, these are awesome.

The shoes are definitely waterproof. Hiking in a wetland in February I unintentionally stepped into the marsh while turning to tell my wife, who was wearing sneakers the trail ahead was looking too wet for her shoes and that we should head back. She looked at me and then at my foot which was completely submerged in brown mucky water to just a millimeter or two below my ankle. She was stunned that I was standing there with my foot submerged. I looked down and saw what she was looking at. I had no idea because the shoe was totally impervious to the water. (Of course I was lucky I didn't sink an inch lower or water would have poored in at the ankle). My foot remained completely dry. I hiked a mile back in absolute comfort. When I returned to the car and removed my shoe my sock was as dry as if I had just pulled it from a dryer in the Sahara.

The only thing that isn't perfect about these shoes is the webbing that holds the top laces and slider. The seam on one shoes webbing seperated almost immediately. The function is still served even with the seperated seam and it is nothing a needle, thread and 3 minutes couldn't fix. The no-tie lacing system is amazing BTW. I am very tall and getting down to re-tie shoes is not something I miss at all.

I do not understand the low ratings this shoe has on this site. I attribute it either to the the miscategorization of a burley hiker as a trail runner or to trolls who work for some competing shoe company who don't want word to spread that these shoes are simply awesome.

To those who said these shoes aren't water proof - well that's just crazy sauce. Maybe the waterproofing will break down at some point but I haven't seen it yet. I expect I will wear out other parts of the shoe through heavy mileage long before that becomes an issue.

I love these shoes!

I got these because I have a narrow heel/low volume foot. These seem to run a little on the narrow side for a medium width, which is great for me and an exception for Salomon. Still, they have plenty of room in the toe box. Most of Salomon's stuff is wide. I usually add orthotics for arch support and fill, but didn't have to with these.

The speed lacing works great and is powerful enough to pull it in on my low volume foot. It pulls down evenly and very tight with little effort. Even more so after some break in, although these don't need any break in. I questioned how well the very thin lace system would hold up. The salesman said the thin lacing system is very durable; just don't pull on the fitting on the end when tightening or it will come apart (the most common complaint). I grab the lace with one hand and pull to tighten while sliding the tensioner fitting down to the shoe with the other hand. Big bonus: they never come untied! The lacing can be replaced. They had replacement sets at the store when I got theses.

I can't attest to the water resistance. I have only been wearing them for casual dress. The green and black is acceptable to me for casual wear/work. I am always looking for a sports wear shoe that looks like a "casual dress" shoe enough so that I can wear with kakis. etc. If they came in brown, and or black I would even wear them with a suit.

I have run in them for short burst and they seem to have good support and cushion.

Good backpacking shoe!

Was looking to replace a pair of hiking boots with a lightweight trail runner. These did the job!
Purchased last week for a 35 mile AT hike in GA.

Was skeptical about the lacing system but it's the best part! So easy to get on/off and fits my feet snug without being too tight. Between the laces and the lightweight/breathability of these, I was ok to leave them on once we reached camp!

Other reviews have gone back and forth with the waterproofing I payed close attention to that while hiking this weekend. The weather was perfect for testing it out too as it rained for nearly 36 hours straight! During the first day, I covered 16 miles in steady, light rain. Once at camp, I found my feet were nice and dry! The second day was a different story though. Rain went from light to downpour. Many times the trail seemed more like a creek. Needless to say, my feet got wet. I don't blame the waterproofing though as the water was ankle deep.

The one complaint I have about these is the cushioning. My pack was only 25 pounds but my feet were a bit sore. This could have been due to the rocky terrain of GA, but I would expect to feel like I had been walking on a cloud with such a light pack. Either way, I guess this could be remedied by adding Superfeet.

I'm glad I've found a lightweight alternative to my hiking boots and look forward to many more miles with these. It's a bonus that they look so good I wouldnt mind wearing them daily!

Amazing comfort, but wears fast

This is my 4th pair of Salomon's (first one of this style). They are the most comfortable shoe i have ever worn. I think they have a slightly wide toe-box which is nice for my feet. The waterproofing is pretty good, although the breathability isn't too great, just wearing them around on a warm day my feet get a little clammy (not too bad). They breath much better when it is cold out and are awesome for cold weather activities like running and biking. Traction is great for trails and pretty good even in snow and ice. The cons are: the sole will wear out quickly, the lacing system will break much too soon, and the lace is so thin that there is a spot where it partially wore through the padding in the tongue and now there isn't much padding between the thin lace and my foot which hurts if i tighten it too much.

Speed and Agility

Bought these for a section hike the AT between NC to Damscus, VA. Did about 300 miles. I loved this shoe! It was my first time hiking without boots and my trusty Merrells no longer had any grip. Trail running shoes are perfect for those that prefer agility and speed.

I wouldn't recommend these to people who have trouble with balance and stability. You just have to have faith that your ankles can withstand the mobility and that this shoe will grip whatever it's on. But if you are good with hiking poles, go for it!

After the hike, the sole still had plenty of tread left. I now use it for casual hikes and chores around the house.

Challenging Feet, Shoes That Deliver

I've only had these for a couple of months and have worn them on a weekend backpaking trip in the Texas Hill Country and some day hikes but the initial performance has been great. I was looking for an in between shoe for these types of activities and I have always had fit problems. I am 6'5" with size 14, flat, narrow feet and comfortable shoes can be a challenge. These fit the bill so far. Very comfortable to the point that at the end of the day I'm not rushing to get them off. I like the feel, look, and lacing system. The only question to see will be how they hold up. So far I am very satisfied.

Long time buyer of these shoes

I have been using these shoes for a hiking for about 3+ years--probably have gone through 12+ pairs. I hike about 3.5 miles, 5 days week, and have taken them on other longer hikes including Grand Canyon, down/up in one day, and they are great. Have used other traditional hiking shoes but these really have been great. They are light but still provide excellent support and toe protection without being too heavy (like other light hiking shoes that I've used). I go through a pair every 4 mos. or so but this was about the same as other light hikers. I just started using custom insoles from RoadRunner (in NP, CA) that extend the life and improve the feel.

Great shoe

Overall I was pretty impressed with these shoes. I've only hiked with them once so far but it was a relatively warm summer day and involved rocky terrain with both gradual and steep inclines as well as a couple stream crossings. My feet stayed cool and dry the entire hike and I may as well have been walking on grass as the cushioning and support of the shoe took on the shock provided by the trail. In addition, the Salomon lacing system is quick and efficient and makes for a great fit. I periodically wear these shoes into the office as well since they're pretty nice looking.

The best yet. Have been an avid hiker/backpacker for many years. Bought my first pair of Salomon boots when making the move to reduce the weight of my gear. They traveled into the Rockies, on the Appalachian Trail and many international treks. Had to leave the first pair in Patagonia. They were finally "done." Ordered this second pair as soon as arriving home. No break-in required and traction makes one feel like a spider. Good on rock, dirt, mud or any terrain on and off trail. Really helps extend my hiking life. Now early 70s and hope to need another pair or three.

Best Hiking/Backpacking Trainer

I've had these shoes for a month. I hike at least 5 miles in them everyday in mixed terrain. I've gone on a 20+ mile backpacking trip in the shoes with 30lb pack weight and experienced no discomfort. My experience so far has only been in mild weather, but have found the shoes to be waterproof while trekking through mud and when spraying them off after a dirty hike. The shoes seem to be holding up well and I have had no issues with durability of lace system.

Negative Reviews:

Decent shoe, not waterproof though

I really want to like these trail running shoes, but one of the main reasons I purchased these was because they were listed as waterproof. Well, I got mine in a few days after ordering online with REI, wore them out in the rain and my socks got wet at the toes and a bit on the bottom. I thought maybe my feet were clammy or something. I wore them out in a couple of inches of snow... socks got wet again.

I sent them back to REI thinking they were defective and REI shipped me a new pair at no charge (great job REI!). I wore this new pair in the rain... wet socks again. I wore them in the snow and ice this winter... wet socks all the time. Folks, these shoes are NOT waterproof by any stretch of the imagination.

I will have to say, in dry weather, these shoes are great performers on my feet. I like the rugged design and the quick lacing system. They took a few weeks to break in and feel really, really comfortable. But I did not experience any blistering or chafing during the break in.

I really wanted to give these shoes more stars, but the whole un-waterproof nature of the product overshadowed all the good features.

Minus one for Salomon, Plus one for REI's excellent customer service.

Sole too soft

I bought these for a trip up Half Dome. I wanted a shoe that was lighter than my backpacking boots for the long trek. While the shoes were comfortable in the store and had a nice aggressive tread, the soles on the trail were miserable. These soles would be okay for light dirt trails but nothing with rocks. I could feel every rock on the way and my feet were badly bruised after the hike. Additionally, the mid sole foam is soft and doesn't offer much support if your feet pronate.

Love Salomon, but not this shoe

can't believe not one person mentions that the lace-up cord saws through the Gore Tex and pulls apart the shoe at each front side; This happened 3 times, I took back two and finally a shoe clerk said that he sees it all the time, and that the factory rep also mentioned it. Still stuck with one bad pair that I had hoped would be different. Its only on this waterproof model, the other Salomon trail runners are great. Just not the Green and Black...

Great idea - poor durability

This was a great shoe for one year. I used it for backpacking. My demands for flexible, light weight and waterproof were met. But after a handful of hikes, the sole is worn and the lace toggle does not keep laces tight. I found this out at the top of a 4500ft descent! I have other Salomon shoes with kevlar laces and the they DO stay tight. It is something wrong with this specific toggle.
Clickfatigue at REI on 08/08/2013

Ouch! Wallet Burn!

I bought 2 pair. I bought the first, initially liked, so I bought a second. Did this because - often colors and styles don't stay around.
The lace toggles are very disapointing - they don't stay tight! I have to tie a knot in the lace to keep the toggle from slipping loose.
The shoes lifespan is cut in half by a lacing system that is unreliable and can't be replaced!

Gortex fails

Gortex lining fails after modest level of use, approx. 40 miles or so. One shoe is then "water resistant " but not "waterproof". Otherwise it's a great comfortable shoe, good traction, etc. And REI was very good about providing a replacement pair- which also failed. Happy with REI, but not happy with Salomon.

Neutral Reviews:

I'm on my 3rd or 4th pair of Salomon boots. Best boots I've ever owned, so it was easy to pick Salomon for my first pair of hiking shoes. I have been nothing but disappointed. First time I put them on, I knew I was going to start looking for a pair of shoes I could lace up. The lacing system on these shoes is poor. I like to leave part of the lower laces loose and the upper laces tight, but that option does not exist with these shoes. They tend to come loose while walking which reduces the support the shoes are supposed to give. Tucking the laces in the pouch they are supposed to be kept in is difficult. If these laces break, you can't just go to the store and buy new laces. You must send them back to the factory. They are too narrow in the wide part of the foot, causing pain in my right foot for almost two weeks before they were broken in enough to not be painful all the time. All the Salomon boots I've had never needed breaking in. These shoes are loose in the heels and this lacing system won't let me fix that by adjusting the laces. While they have become broken in after miles and days of walking, the lacing system causes these shoes to not come up to expectations I was expecting from Salomon.

OK shoe

I bought a pair of these shoes in 2009 (not ultra 2)while in Sweden and they have been really comfortable and I have had not problems with them. I bought a pair of the Ultra 2 from REI and the shoe seemed stiffer/less compliant to the foot. They are still a nice shoe. In a short time the stitching on the lace pocket on the tongue tore out on one side. Then after a couple of months the other side of the same tongue tore out and now the right shoe has one side of the lacing pocket tore. I have only broke the laces on the original pair from 2009 and they have had no stitching issues.

Not bad, but some flaws.

For the most part, these are pretty solid solid shoes. I used them on the Inca Trail and all over Peru. They do well in wet weather, but the ventilation of the ClimaShield is very poor. My feet were often quite warm while others with the GoreTex version of these shoes did not experience the same problem. Also, the laces are a bit uncomfortable when tightened enough for steep, extended downhills.

easy to wear, has pull cord for easy tie with a mesh pouch to hold zip cord

tbuck1234 at on 08/19/2013

I like them because they're easy to slip on and off. I mostly use them for yard work around the house and walking the dog. The heel cup is so loose around my heels especially the left heel that they move around laterally as well as up and down when the laces are tightened.

This shoe seems to fit perfectly, but still slips in the heel. Difficult to fix the heel slip because of unique lacing system.
