The XT Wings 3 sits on the "pure trail shoe" end of the Salomon line. Its aggressive, directional tread and deep heel brakes make it one of the best choices for those who are running fast over soft ground, although it does not take to pavement as well as more neutral shoes like the XA Pro or XR Mission.

The midsole of the XT Wings features a medial post, which is a column of dense foam just under the inside arch of your foot. This post helps prevent your foot from rolling inward with each step, which is helpful for those with high arches or pronation problems. Not so much for those with flat feet or people who suponate when they run.

The outsole of the XT Wings features two different densities of Contagrip rubber, with Contragrip LT (light weight) across most of the sole and Contragrip HA (High Abrasion) for durability on the rearmost part of the heel and the inside of the forefoot.

Excellent Multi-Purpose Shoe

To preface, my feet are about average width, but I have higher than normal arches.

After trying most others in the store nothing compared to the support, comfort, breathability, and grip of this shoe.

Prior to going on an 80mile backpacking trip with this shoe I took it on one three mile trail run. The shoe broke in quickly and felt very comfortable.

Over the 80 mile backpacking trip we encountered everything from single track to light scrambling on sandstone mountains. The shoe provided excellent traction and support in all of these conditions, even when slightly wet. They dried out quickly after an accidental fall into a stream and didn't get overly wet from morning dew. I didn't encounter any noticeable hot-spots or parts of the design that stuck out as causing discomfort. All of the materials held up to this punishment quite well, with no failures to date. Additionally, the large toe-cap and high instep provided great protection from low lying rocks and ruts.

Overall this shoe far outperformed my "Light" hiking Merrill Moab's in every category. They breathe better, are lighter, more cushy, have excellent lateral and fore-aft support, and deliver more grip. My toe never hits the front and the lace system really provides good pressure distribution and quick adjustments. This shoe will be great for those looking to hike Colorado 14ers, summer backpacking trips, and trail/mountain running.

The only reason I didn't give it max stars was because the La Sportiva Raptor has slightly better grip for scrambling and a little more cushioning (although it wasn't as comfortable on my foot).

For those with high arches I would recommend an insert, which I have now added, but for shorter distances you can get by without. Also, those with wide feet may find this shoe a little tight, as it provides a lot of lateral support.

Perfect Multi Purpose Shoe

I purchased these shoes so that I could use them in some obstacle/mud races. My first race with them is still a month away and I have fallen in love with these shoes. As part of my training I have been doing a lot of trail running and these have made a tremendous difference on the amount of traction I have on the trail. In addition to the running I have used them as hiking shoes (when my Vasque boots aren't needed) and as approach shoes when I go climbing. They are extremely comfortable and have noticed a decrees in any foot pain that I used to feel after long runs or hikes. The only negative thing that I have noticed is that you have very little traction if you are on a hard smooth surface (such as a wood bridge going across of a creek on the trail). I will definately be getting another pair of these if this current pair ever wears out.

Great all around trail shoe

I recently used these shoes for a Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim run through the Grand Canyon. After 15 hours, 50 miles, and 21K feet of elevation change, I only had one small blister on my right heel. Otherwise, my feet felt great and the extra cushioning provided the comfort needed on the downhill parts of the run.

The tread on the shoe worked fine, the quick lace system is fantastic, and the extra protection on the toecap came in handy.

I usually run in a more minimalist type of shoe, but on runs over 30 miles I prefer a shoe like the x-wings that have a little extra support and cushioning.

Currently, there are many companies making great trail shoes, but Salomon is definitely one of the best. If you enjoy trail running then you should give Salomon shoes a try. Don't be dissuaded by the price, the quality of the product is worth the few extra dollars.

Great Product

These are great running / hiking sneaks. My main issue is finding comfortable footwear. I over-pronate and have narrow feet and this creates issues with athletic footwear. These were great right out of the box. I do add soft arch supports for comfort because I am so used to them, but to be honest, not sure they are needed with these shoes. I liked them so much I bought a second pair. One pair is an everyday shoe for walking the dog and around town when I want to be comfortable. The other pair are my active shoes for trail runs and hiking. I also loved that they came in black. I don't like all of the fancy colors sneaks come in today and the black (with a little red) was perfect. It looks like they changed that and I don't like the new bright colors so much. Hopefully my two pair will last awhile.

Well Constructed

The shoe has great features with toe guard, venting, but tight mesh not allowing dirt in, great grip, lots of control at heel keeping shoe under foot when on angled surfaces, but very flexible at front of foot and good feel under front of foot. The shoe does seem a bit tight, but really keeps out rocks and well controlled, the footbed is one of the best I have ever felt, no need for orthotics. I am actually moving to minimalist shoes for running, but use this for hiking / walking to keep my volume up. The grip descending is very good, and comforts your feet, much better than my trail gloves in that respect, so these definitely have their place in my casual fitness mix of hiking and trail running.

love them

bought these shoes for trail running at garden of the gods and other locations in IL's shawnee national forest. they fit and felt great right out of the box. took them on a 10 mile run the first day and they performed great. i will update this review once i log somemore miles on them, but i have used salomon shoes for about 6 years, so i pretty much know what to expect(the best). these new xt wings doesn't seem to be a exception.

as for rei, great service as always. got them in 2 days with the free shipping option. shoes seemed to be free from defects.

Great shoe and helped my foot problems from wearing Nike shoes for so long. Nike shoes were making my toes feel like they were going to fall off. Between the Nike Free and Air Max I have rolled my ankles so many times that I was just done with them. My first test for these shoes was at 8100 feet hunting in the mountains of Arizona. My feet felt great and no pain in the toes. I hiked around the mountains for 3 days and not once did I roll my ankles. Great shoe.

I use these for running single track deer trails with lots of roots and rocks. Traction is great as is the protection - especially when stubbing my toe on a root. Salomon had stopped making size 12.5 for a while, which left me trying other brands to find something comparable. I never did, and fortunately Salomon started making 12.5 again. I've used Salomon shoes to run everything from mud to glaciers and they're my favorite overall running shoe - road or trail.

GREAT SHOE!!! I don't use these to run on trails, rather to do day hikes; they are light weight and offer great traction with their treads, but what I find to be the best part of the shoe is their built-in orthotics. It almost feels like I have my own custom built, high end foot beds. I have wide feet and these fit perfectly. I tried on other Salomons, but they didn't feel or fit quite as good as these did.

Very solid trail shoe. Protects your soles from those sharp rocks. thin material on the side of shoe can lead to some unpleasant tangential encounters with the substrate. Not an extensive amount of cushion which I noticed toward the end of a 15 mile jaunt. Traction is excellent. My go-to rocky terrain trail shoe for 10-20 mile runs. Over that and I would need a little more cushion.

Tall Shoe

I have run in Solomon shoes for the past six years. My last shoes were Solomon XR Crossmax's. I dropped into REI and grabbed the XT Wings because they looked like the replacement for the Crosmax. However, on my first run I discovered they are much taller. They are very comfortable but the tongue and uppermost lacing eyelet is 3/4" taller than my old shoes. This produced intolerable chafing on the inside of my ankle until it almost bled.

Great shoe, just not the same as my old ones and too tall for me.
