Nice Jacket!

I bought this jacket specifically for cross country skiing in colder conditions. I wear the jacket with only an Under Armour base layer and find that it keeps me very warm and comfortable and protected from the wind. The coldest I have worn this jacket skiing was low teens and very windy conditions. I think the jacket would keep me warm in temps in the high single digits with a good base layer and steady movement while cross country skiing. Even in the harshest winds, I was very comfortable in the jacket. I have found that if I get warm and begin to perspire, I just zip the collar down a bit and bring in a little more outside air. I perspire way to much to expect even the most breathable fabric to keep me dry without outside air. I would wear this jacket hiking in even colder spring and fall conditions.
Overall, I am very happy with this jacket. I believe NF considers it to be a soft shell jacket but I like the "stiffer" exterior of the shell compared to the Apex jacket. The jacket exudes quality with the very soft and plush inside material. When you put it on, you feel like you are wearing a luxury outdoor jacket.

I wanted light, thin and warm...

This jacket was the exact answer! I did a lot of research. I looked at Spyder, Columbia, Nike, UnderArmor, ZeroRestriction and finally decided on the North Face M Chromium Thermal J. Only weighs 24 ounces in a size XL and it is incredibly warm and windproof.
I was just wearing a Dri-fit tee long sleeve tee under this jacket today. the temp was 20 degrees F, with strong north winds. I felt no cold air inside the jacket anywhere!
I am 6'-4" and weigh 230, fairly athletic build.. The size XL is such a perfect fit it looks tailored. Aesthetically it is an extremely good looking jacket. Lots of compliments every time I wear it. Well tailored and probably the best looking jacket I've ever owned.
Also, it seems to be highly resistant to snagging. Hiking in the woods with tree branches scraping against the sleeve has no impact on the finish.
When the weather warms up in the 50's and low 60's, the jacket works well zipped or unzipped, not too hot because it breathes well.
Lastly, I love the color! The Nautical Blue is amazing! Highly recommended.

I have had this jacket for over a year and used in temperatures from 10 degrees to 60 degrees and I love it. I like colder weather and with it being fleece lined I don't need any thicker jacket than this. It keeps me very warm throughout. For rain and snow it is perfect because the rain is repelled like water on a duck. It does not soak through at all and if there is water droplets on it you can just shake and it comes right off. I also bought my wife the women's version and she loves it just as much. I will be purchasing some for Christmas gifts.

I wear it fall-winter-spring

Highly durable. Completely wind and waterproof, once left the sleeve submerged overnight and found the inside still dry. I own one jacket currently, which I use year round, and have for the last 3 years. This jacket and a thin t-shirt is comfortable to about 40 degrees in high wind, combined with a thermal layer, however, has taken me down to about as cold as it gets in TN. I liked it so much my whole family went out and got similar ones. Cheers.

Picked up this jacket at Backcountry on sale and it has been fantastic! One comment on the sizing though: I'm 6'3" 175lb with a long torso and jackets from the North Face tend to be a bit short for me (Size M, everything else about it fits great). The arms are plenty large to accommodate layers and fits pretty true to size otherwise. Just wanted to point that out for any taller, long-waisted guys.

Great jacket, ordered asphalt grey heather medium (5'8" 155). Love the color. Good fit, sleeves are a bit long. This jacket is surprisingly wind proof, and water repellant (beads right off), and does a great job of trapping heat in. In fact, that would be my only complaint is that it can get to hot on occasion...armpit zips would be nice. Works great on the ski hill, layer up for temps below 20 degrees.

raip335250 at Backcountry.com on 05/25/2013

Runs true to size if not a touch large. I am 6'1 with a long torso and got an xl and am happy with that size. Jacket is rugged and for price is hard to beat. I like not having the zipper on the chest and the fleece is nice. water resistance is good. cleans easily. good for layering, maybe bulky for a long hike where you are layering but I love it.

I bought this jacket about a month back, to prepare for the coming winter months, and I'm already impressed with the performance. We've already had some bitter cold days in VA, and this jacket does the trick with just a t-shirt underneath. I'm sure if you wanted to, wearing a base-layer would work great as well for those extra chilly days... Overall, i would definitely recommend this jacket, another great TNF product.

Matt Walkup at Backcountry.com on 11/25/2013

Love this jacket.

Am very impressed overall quality.
Cost performance is excellent. High workmanship.
Good protection from wind and rain.
A Long sleeve T is good enough for 5 to 10 C and a bit thicker shirt or more is needed below that.
One minor negative point that moisture stays inside and this jacket is not breathable.
Only 5KM walk makes me wet.
kittsbeach at The North Face on 01/02/2014

Got this as a gift for my father in law. He absolutely loves it. He wanted something warmer than the bionic, this thicker version is perfect for his needs as a handy man in the north east. He wanted something rain resistant, warm and durable. Fits him perfectly too!

Negative Reviews:

The jacket was too thin. Not warm

thop1004942 at Backcountry.com on 12/17/2013

Neutral Reviews:

The jacket seems like it would be a great one. However there is a disadvantage for people who are tall, or have long torso. I didn't see that the jacket came in a tall which is a disappointment. The jacket just does not come down far enough, which is a problem when you are trying to stay warm in weather zero or below!

cktp1014839 at Backcountry.com on 01/13/2014

North Face quality for sure. Blocks the wind and all around good fall jacket. One word of caution, order the next size up if you plan to layer under the jacket.
