Mountain Gear

The Zonal Jacket from Mountain Hardwear has been refined and reworked to be your go-to layer for backcountry, front-country, side-country and country music. It works everywhere! Long stretch panels at the side and under-arm vent excess heat and allow extra mobility, while the Thermic Micro synthetic insulation resists wetting-out, so you can add a warm layer without burning up.

Sierra Trading Post
Mountain Hardwear's Zonal jacket has specially placed insulated panels and zoning construction to keep you warm where you need it most and to reduce overall bulk.

SunnySports
Lightweight, low-profile and warm. What makes the Zonal different is its hybrid construction: 60 grams of Thermic Micro synthetic insulation in the body and sleeves for warmth (even when wet) and stretch fleece in the side and underarm panels for great, non-bulky fit and easier movement.

No Disappointment!

This is a great jacket and so versatile that I think everyone should have one of these in their outerwear arsenal. This is a very lightweight jacket that takes up very little space if you need to pack it. For its weight, it is very warm. It also looks nice enough to wear out in town and not look like you have your winter jacket on.My favorite feature of this jacket is how well it fits. Most down jackets make you look like the Michelin Man due to their bulky loft. This jacket eliminates this problem by putting a stretchy, non-down fabric on the sides and back of the jacket (referred to as side stretch panels in the product description). These panels give you a great fit and really separate this jacket from the rest of the competition. Try it on to see how much difference this makes in the fit and look of this jacket. You will not be disappointed.

My search is finally over

I have been on the hunt for a lightly insulated coat for the past 3 years. I wanted something fitted and not too bulky that I can wear a shell over it if necessary, but warm enough to be worn by itself 95% of the time in our mild NC winters. This is it.

This coat is more fitted than most, and fits very similar to North Face Summit Series gear. I think it's a pretty standard fit for Mountain Hardwear though. The Patagonia Nano Puff is a good comparison, but it is baggier and doesn't have the underarm panels for breathability that this one does.

I'm 5'10", 170 lbs and the medium fits me perfectly. I purchased the red, which is actually not extremely bright like I figured, and the zipper pulls and a few of the zippers add nice contrast.

Great Lightweight Insulation Layer

This is the 'second generation' of the Zonal Jacket, and it has 'addressed most of the issues' of the earlier version.
The added stretch panels in the elbows, under arm and arm pit, as well as back of shoulder give it the needed stretch that the earlier version lacked, although it is still a little tight in the shoulders/arm pits (at least for me, as I have large shoulders and upper arms).

I am 58", 155 pounds, 32 inch waist and a Medium fits me well/snug. Cinch cords adjust for some of the 'slack' in the waist area.

Negative Reviews:

get the compressor instead

the review that says this jacket serves no purpose is dead on. to thin and retains no warmth. looks good, but that's it. i love mountain hardwear, but pass on this and go for the compressor instead. much better and in the same price range

Neutral Reviews:

Decent warmth-to-weight

I puchased this jacket to wear as an insulation under my shell for the most bitterly cold days and also as a daily-driver. The jacket is cut to fit well. The stretch panels allow for generous freedom of movement in activities without creating gapping or exposure at the wrists and waist. It fits true-to-size. The jacket is very light-weight yet it provides a decent amount of warmth. The jacket does not do a good job of breathing however it is better than the similar jackets without the stretch panels. This is not much of an issue for me because of how I use it, but someone looking for a primary jacket for outerwear activities may want to look for something with more breathability.

A mid-weight jacket that doesn't have a real purpose

I bought this jacket because it looks cool. I was a little disappointed with the weight / warmth when I got it, as It is only slightly warmer than a thin fleece but not as warm as a winter jacket. I wore it to run errands when it was 25 degrees and felt pretty chilly. Overall, the athletic cut and design is nice, but I can only give it a 3 star rating because of its lack of functionality.
