Kelty Grand Mesa 4 Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

I have used this product on two backpacking trips and two car camping trips. It has never let me down. One thing about Kelty products, they are designed for the casual hiker/backpacker. If you are looking for an inexpensive, reliable product, the Grand Mesa is that and more. The last use was during a car camping trip with family. As we all know the weather in New England this June has been WET! It rained for three days, heavy at times, and the ground was soaked. I normally lay a sheet of plastic under the tents (too cheap for footprints) but forgot it on this trip. The tent was sitting on wet grass and mud for 3 straight days and the floor stayed dry. The fly has excellent coverage, and the vestibule is great for keeping muddy shoes out of the tent, but still dry.

"large vestibule" not so much

I 'm a boy scoutmaster, so needless to say it rains when we camp. I used this tent for the first time after a ton of research. It was light very easy to set up. My only problem was with flap on the vestibule. when it's raining you must push the flap out as you unzip it otherwise the water on the fly will drain into the tent. and the "large vestibule" isn't. maybe your boots can be stored there.
Otherwise I stayed dry and warm in steady rain 40 degree temps.
overall a nice basic tent with plenty of room for 2 adults and gear or 3 small scouts.

The Ideal 3 person tent.

I purchased this tent specifically for going to the Outer Banks which is super windy and sunny. I wanted a tent that would be good for venting heat and able to withstand the 20-30mph+ winds of Cape Hatteras. This tent easily withstood the wind, set up easily as well. Virtually zero stress and I was thoroughly surprised since 5 other tents from my group broke under the wind. The Aluminum poles are an absolute must. This tent is perfect for to fit 3 people comfortably. If you want a perfect tent for under $250 id say this is your best bet.

Kelty tent a good value

Tent is very light for a four man, and solid. Surprisingly it is also very warm in cold weather.
I used it with two other guys on a hunting trip to temps in the mid to low twenties, and it was warm!
However, I would not try to sleep 4 men in this tent unless they are relatively short. Works well for 3 though. Held up great in wind and allowed very little draft despite some stiff winds one evening.

This tent is durable, reliable, comfortable and one of the easiest tents to put up and take down. All of these high end features for an incredible price. The vestibule is just big enough to store our packs, boots and a few other things we don't want inside. Everything is easy, the zippers, the clips and it is big enough to sleep comfortably. Great tent for the money.

Great Product!!

I bought this tent for my Fiancee to replace our tiny [@] tent. We both loved it! It's big enough to fit a queen size air mattress and still has room for whatever items you bring. We got rained on the last time we went out, and we woke up dry and comfortable. The set-up and take down is super easy.
Melyss0115 at Campmor on 05/05/2012
I have always been happy with Kelty tents and this one is not an exception. I got it for car camping and it is perfectly suited for that purpose. It is a little heavy for backpacking, but if you split the poles and the tent, then it shouldn't be too bad.

Mesa easy!

Perfect for BWCA Canoe camping. Fits in Duluth pack perfectly. Sleeps 3 very nicely. Would not use for 4. Dry inside for two nights of rain. Perfect for sleeping 'under the stars' on clear night due to screen top when fly is off.

Great value for the price

They all overdue how many it will hold - 2 with gear is great. Long enough for 6'3" tall men. Snaps up by one easily.
E. the fish guy at Campmor on 09/09/2011

Easy set up, light weight, packs small

Great tent for BWCA canoe tripping! Sleeps 3 very comfortably. Screen top awesome for clear, starry nights.

Negative Reviews:

Not as good as described below

After reading the product description and the product reviews, I thought that this tent would have better suited a party of 3 in the BWCA. I have used many of Kelty's products over the years with much success and I do not aim to completely knock this tent. Outside of being sold at a great price the tent is very user friendly and sets up with ease. This is probably a great tent in temperatures above 50F, so if that is your intention, this tent has a lot of good features and for the price you should probably also buy better stakes and a storage canopy. ***This under no circumstance is a 3.5 season tent***

We encountered such extreme condensation issues that it was literally raining in our tent. It even rained from the mesh and side walls when we took of the rain fly and opened the door in fairly windy 26F weather. We tried placing MSR packtowels to trap condenstion, no luck their either. Rain, rain, and more condensation rain. It was almost like Chinese water torture. God forbid we maxed out the tent with 4 people.

The side walls also had so much water running down them that I awoke to a saturated sleeping bag and wet clothes and a serious chill at 2 AM. I was so wet I had to changed clothes, make a fire, and slept in a polymylar blanket. If not for an awesome bag and some good warm weather with a stiff breeze the next day I may have done that for the next 3 nights.

Thanks for reading.
