Merrell Shiver Moc 2 Waterproof Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

I've worn these for over a month now. My feet are a bit wide, but not so much that I need wide sizes, which are usually too sloppy.
These Merrells were really snug when I first got them but, being leather, I expected them to stretch. I just hoped they would stretch a little more than they have; they are still pretty snug. They are the most comfortable when worn with thinner socks.
Of course, if you're just wearing them around the house or office, then thin socks are fine. Don't expect to comfortably wear thicker socks with them.
They appear to be made really well, which is what I expected from Merrell. I'm not disappointed there. They feel solid and stable underneath me.
The 'Dark Earth' is definitely darker than appears in the image above. While that's not a big deal for me, it could be a surprise for some wearers.
The treads are fantastic for traction. Slipping is not such a problem with these on, but walking on a tile floor after being out in the weather sounds like a platoon of soldiers, which can be a bit annoying.
They are waterproof and fleece lined for warmth, and I've noticed that my feet want to sweat a bit more than usual with these on. It's not terrible, and the Aegis treatment keeps them from smelling like a locker room.
Overall, a pretty good winter shoe. 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought these to deal with an early winter in western Colorado to wear for casual and work. The look and dark brown color is goes easily with jeans and chinos. The tongue has an elastic gore that holds tight to the top of the instep, almost uncomfortably at first but loosens up as you wear them in. They now feel pretty good to the point of lounging around. The sole is reasonably cushioned but not squishy. The toe box is a little wide but not noticeably so. They don't slip on the heel and are true to normal street shoe size. The best part is great traction and stability in snow and ice plus they are water proof. They seem durable but only time will tell. I don't wear them every day as my only shoe. I think they do the job for winter wear when a full winter boot isn't needed and are a great value. Hopes this helps.

Warn, comfortable, thick rubberized sole

The first thing I did was to waterproof the suede upper using a NickWax product. I live in an area with rainy winters. I also bought an older style (last year's?) of Mocs on sale, in the wrong size. To take up the extra room, I put in an arch support. One ankle was still loose, so I added Molefoam to the back so the heel does not slip. They are Men's shoes, and I am a woman, so would not expect the heels to fit perfectly. My adaptions have made WONDERFUL all-weather shoes for the winter. Warm, comfortable! Next time, I will buy them in the correct size (at full price) with a better fit. But this pair should last for years!

Very Comfortable

I am using this as my primary "getting around during the winter" shoes. For years I had used my running shoes year round. These would get wet, but were easy to take on an off. I moved to a hiking boot to keep from ruining shoes, but they can be a pain to take on and off. This Moc is easy to get on and off without laces, and is waterproof. Its a great combination for running errands or commuting or to get to the garage and back.

You won't be shoveling in more than a few inches, but it grips great and looks good.

quick and easy

An all around good shoe. I moved from a warm climate back to michigan in the winter and needed some warmer casual footwear. plenty warm for in and out of the car use. good traction and good looking. the best part about them is the easy on and off. great for when you walk out in the snowy wet weather and realise you left your phone upstairs and don't want to track snow in the house! only con is they feel like they may fall off while running but it's pretty rare for me to run while out on the town or "running" errands.

Great Shoe

Outstanding shoe. I bought mine for business travel to Scandinavia during wet and slushy weather. Completely waterproof, and non-slip on the most slippery surfaces. Slip on makes it easy on and easy off. Design is perfect for business meetings and all around wear. Amazingly comfortable. Mine were true to size (12). The colors vary -- so if you are ordering online you may get a different color than the picture. I bought mine in REI and they were much darker than the pic and they look great. You will not be disappointed.

Extreme comfort, easy to slip on, great

I wore these out of the store and now almost all the time. So comfortable, offer a great deal of support expecially lateral stability thanks to the wider trad at back. Vibrum soles are awesome. I am actually excited about these shoes. I have wide feet and REI did not have wide ones so went one size up and feel great. Easy to slip onas the heel leather is sturdy to push off of sliding foot in. No need to bend down.

I love these shoes, warm, rugged, keep your feet dry and comfortable. They are made with very sturdy material so it did take a week or so of wear to break them in. I bought them specifically for winter wear, would buy them again in a heartbeat. I saw others had said they felt a 1/2 size bigger or I would have ordered size 11 - got the 10.5 and they fit perfectly.

Excellent for cold weather.

Needed a shoe for business travel during the winter in Sweden. This one met all expectations. Non-slip sole -- I never slipped once while walking on snow and ice. Slip-on for easy on/easy off. Looks good. Very comfortable. If you need a shoe for traveling to a cold weather area, this is the one for you. Note, they come in different colors than pictured (I chose a very dark brown).

My go-to casual shoe

The Shiver Moc 2 is the brawniest of the Merrell slip-ons. The uppers are stiffer than the other models and require a while to break in. They seem to be very durable and the tread is aggressive and very nice in icy conditions. The shoes are warm, but not too warm for everyday use in cooler weather. Really nice shoe!

Negative Reviews:

Hot and Cold

These shoes look very nice and are generally comfortable. However, I was able to put these shoes to the test for three weeks while on travel in an area with a lot of snow, and I am unsatisfied for the following reasons:

1. Leaky. As "Carl the citizen" points out, they are not waterproof in the toe box area. If you walk around in an area with even light snow that melts on the upper leather, you should expect the dampness to make its way inside through either the stitching, or through saturation. Melting snow sits on the top ridges of the waterproof rubber, with nowhere really to go but into the leather.

2. Hot when indoors. I wore these indoors for numerous days in a work environment and had to continuously remove my feet from them due to the heat build up. The same was the case when sitting in a restaurant. By contrast, my feet did not get nearly as hot when wearing heavy black GoreTex military issue boots on alternate days, using the same brand/style socks. Fortunately, the antimicrobial odor control worked well, as it was a very necessary feature since I needed to frequently remove my feet from the shoes.

3. Cold. Due to dampness/sweating from the heat, the water or snow melting on the top, or a combination, I found that my toes got very cold while walking around outside at night in mid-20 degree weather.

4. Not comfortable for long walks. I found that my heels started hurting substantially while walking long distances. This does not typically happen to me when running or hiking in other shoes.

Additionally, I found that the shoes did not have the traction I expected. I slipped or almost slipped a few times on stairs, and slid easily on slightly icy pavement (moreso that I think I would have in other shoes).

Those negatives said, here are some positives:

1. They are easy to get into and out of, which is great at an airport, while on a plane, or while at a desk for long periods.

2. They are definitely waterproof when stepping into small puddles that might flood the lowers of any non-waterproof running or hiking shoe.

3. If you are prone to particularly cold feet, and don't plan to be outside for long periods when it is snowing, then the shoe is worth your consideration - the negatives above for me may be strong positives for you.

I will be returning these shoes for a refund, and will instead probably purchase one of Merrell's non-waterproof mocs (or another brand).

Wet toes

I love Merrell shoes and I have owned several pairs of their Mocs.

Pros of most Merrell's I've owned:
Easy to put on by simply stepping into them.
Water resistant.
Professional looking.
Very comfortable.
Lightweight.
Breathable.

No Cons, until I bought these.
They aren't waterproof around the toe box.

Living in Oregon means you will get days where it will just drizzle, then rain, then drizzle, etc... constantly. Add numerous puddles, and you've got the perfect recipe for continuously wet conditions.

It only took the first day like the one I described above to prove these shoes as inadequate.
The other parts of my feet stayed bone dry and that includes sweating, but the toe box on these became damp during the rain, and soaked the first puddle I stepped in.

I was extremely disappointed.
Carl the citizen at REI on 11/11/2012
I've purchased two pairs of this Shiver Moc 2. On the first pair, the pull tab/loop broke the second time I put them on. On my second pair the pull tab broke after about 30 days of light use (only wear a couple times per week). I am a huge fan of Merrell shoes, have several other pairs of hiking shoes and have owned maybe 5 or 6 pairs of the Moc shoe line. I've never had a problem before. These shoes are very comfortable, the waterproofing works, the grip is very good, but without the pull tab it's a hassle to pull them on. I will still buy Merrell's, but this particular model seems to have a design flaw.

Neutral Reviews:

Photo color different than shoe color

The main issue I have with this shoe is that the color of the actual shoe is very different than what is shown on the REI website!

The Dark Earth shoe color on the shoes I received is very dark brown, not the lighter color in the REI website photo.

Before purchasing these shoes, look at the true color on the Merrell website.
