The SummitRocket 40 is a pack that really captures the essence of the "new" Mountain Hardwear that was unveiled in 2011. At the core of Mountain Hardwear's new identity is a collection of ultra-light, State Orange-colored gear for "speed alpinism," as embodied by the exploits of Swiss climber Ueli Steck. The aptly-named SummitRocket was introduced as Steck's primary pack as he zoomed up the north face of the Eiger in a then-record 2 hours and 47 minutes. Its minimalist, roll-top design weighs in at less than two pounds, but still provides enough volume for all of your extra layers and attachment points for your ice tools and crampon bag. The white fabric on the front and bottom is  HardWear X-Ply, a blended fabric which includes super-strong Dyneema for resistance to abrasion from rocks and your ice tools.

The SummitRocket isn't the alpine pack for everyone, due to its lack of ski-carrying facilities and organizational pockets. But if your goal is to go fast and light crowd, this is the pack for you.

Also, it might interest you to learn that these 2012 closeout versions of the SummitRocket are 55-60 grams lighter than the new 2013 zip-top version...so get them before they're gone!

Reviews:

I bought this pack as part of my plan to cut weight out of my camping/climbing/mountaineering gear. I try not to own a bunch of bags and I think this will replace the majority. I replaced the frame sheet with another product meant for sleeping. It's egg carton shaped in design and has reflective material on one side. It should be noted that I didn't try the mountain hardware frame sheet first. I've only carried the pack, fully loaded, about 1k on flat ground. It's very comfortable, but I bet I only had 35lbs inside it. I had it loaded up for 3 days in the mountains for a summit attempt that never went. Some things that I worry about from my initial use are the outside of the bag where you would strap crampons down. You need to take extra care not to punch through the material. That's kind of the name of the game with the lite weight stuff. You need to be extra vigilant that you don't stick something sharp through it. The shoulder straps are perfect. Slim but padded just enough. The waist belt may need more or not. It's just too soon to tell. The size of this bag also makes you really choose what you need and what you don't. If your not committed to that, then don't buy a bag like this. Overall, I love it. Great concept and execution.

This pack is great for short trips. Unless you are an ultralight backpacker, this pack will likely only allow you a trip of up to 3-4 days (depending on the circumstances). It is large enough to fit a lightweight 1 man tent, lightweight sleeping back, few days worth of food, a couple water bottles and the other small items you would bring on a short trip. If you attach a water bottle to the outside it leaves more room for food. It is very light and the built in "sleeping pad" (very thin but enough for decent terrain) saves space as well. It is not a problem that there are no pockets, simply bring a small dry sack to put small items in, if needed. One of my best gifts to date.

This pack covers all of your needs for alpine fun... and nothing else. The spartan suspension held loads up to 40lbs with aplomb yet never seemed too bulky or cumbersome for true climbing. The included pad can be removed and replaced with a 3/4 Z-lite for a bit better comfort and R-value. I loved having a roll-top for quickly stuffing or removing my puffy and the clean exterior and interior literally prevent you from bringing excess gear. The pack body is pretty burly and water resistant so I'd feel fine never using a cover. From ski-touring to alpine climbing, this pack crushes.

My first impressions on receiving the pack were that the ice axe loop on the left side was missing an elastic adjustable tie down device at the bottom attachment point, and that the hip belt strap was way too long. I contacted Mountain Hardwear customer support and they responded promptly and helpfully, arranging for me to return the pack for alterations at no expense. They are going to shorten the belt and finish the end professionally and also send me an extra elastic tool attachment device.
