The legend continues with the WhisperLite Universal, MSR's first hybrid-fuel stove, combining canister and liquid fuel capabilities into one comprehensive package. Fuel-specific jets and fuel source couplers let it burn just about anything, anywhere. A trail-friendly, light and packable design, and capacity to burn an inverted canister for improved performance, make it unique in its class. Canister and fuel bottle not Included.

To be quite honest I probably could have just gone with a Pocket Rocket, saved some money and space in my pack, and been fine. BUT, I do like that the fuel canister is set away from the burners, and that it has its own wide stand. Something about boiling water sitting on top of an unstable canister base makes me feel a little uneasy. There is also the fuel versatility; I'll probably use canister fuel 99% of the time, but who knows... I just like having that option.
This thing boils water fast! I thought I was just getting great results the first time I was using it because we were at ~sea level. Just used it again at 9K feet, and it was bringing 2 cups to a boil before I even thought to check. I would probably give this 5 starts if it packed down a LITTLE bit smaller
This was to replace my Primus omnilite ti, which did not work. This stove, unlike my old stove, lit up on the first try, was really quiet, nice blue flame, and is bomber. I love the fact that I can use canister and liquid fuel just by changing the jet and connector. MSR knows what they are doing. The only gripes i have are the plastic fuel pump and the fact that fuel leaks when you disconnect the fuel line from the pump, and when you depressurize the bottle. I have heard that the pump is super durable despite its construction so that helped me get over that a little bit. Great stove! This stove will last you forever. I know it, Backpacker magazine knows it, so just get it and find out for yourself.
I know many people will think this stove is gimmicky. I did too. Though I was able to pick one up for the sleaziest of sleazy prices. Thank you REI members who return stuff.
I like MSR stoves already but wasn't sure about a dual fuel stove.. It is actually a really cool idea. Changing out the jet is super simple and even the fuel bottle connectors are easy too.
I am just going to leave the canister connectors attached and use it that way. Super cool to have a canister stove that can stabilize larger pots.
And thank you to the REI members again for the WhisperLite International I was able to get along with this one all for $68. REI's 'rental return' policy for its abusive douchebag members sometimes works out quite well for others.
This is something I have been waiting for many years to come out. It works just like the Whisperlite International, but you can burn canister as well. The change the modes you need to change the get (takes about 1 min) and then you need to change the module that connects the fuel to the stove (takes about 2 mins). The other improvement is that the canister can be used in liquid feed mode. This will add a little extra burn time/performance on the canister. The stand for the liquid feed mode puts the canister at a slight angle that allows you to adjust the fuel easier with gloves on.
I feel so much more comfortable knowing that If I needed to I could switch my stove over to a fuel bottle. I feel safer carrying the canisters in my pack. Nothing like the smell of fuel all over your sleeping bag and tent. I think the canisters are way more convenient than the fuel bottles. But if I run out of canisters I know i can just fill up my fuel bottle and be on my way. This is why I love this stove so much. There is a lot to be said about versatility of a product and this one has it !
this stove is spectacular for most purposes. the pump is criminal in that it sucks and breaks way too easy at the control valve that is made of nylon threads[we had to return it once for a new one]. for a perfect stove just order the ergo pump by primus and use the canister gas adapter msr includes and then you never have to switch adapters either for liquid or canister gas. the only thing will be the jets to change depending on what yer doin. We use the msr pump as a emergency backup for our wisperlite international or our universal...
Great little stove, used it heaps in Tasmania, and never failed me once.
In order to ensure that the different jets don't leak fuel, you have to torque them down pretty tight. Once you've done this, it's hard to get them off again to switch fuel types without bending the generator tube.
