MSR Expedition Service Kit Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

Worked on my 20+ year model

I was hesitant to buy this kit after reading the earlier reviews. My 20+ years old stove started leaking fuel like crazy after i used white gas in stead of unleaded fuel (as I did during the last 22 years). I guess a side effect of the white gas was, that it cleaned all the o-rings too. So gas everywhere. I bought a new pump and a service kit, just to be sure. In this service kit is, next to all kind of spare parts, also a very detailed discription of how the clean and repair the stoves. Both for the new models (the "red" ones) as well as my old "grey" ones. So I replaced all the o-rings on my old pump and voilá: it workes as always. The kit has all o-rings for both models and plenty of other space parts for both of them. I can not relate to the previous negative reviews, worked for me as a champ. Only downside is the price: 30 bucks for the kit seems a little bit on the high end, but then, 30 bucks every 20 years, I guess that's okay.

This will be close to the review that I posted for the MSR replacement fuel pump, so to quote myself:
"In 1801, Eli Whitney started producing firearms with interchangeable and replaceable parts. In modern times, MSR produces stoves with interchangeable and replaceable parts, utilize this feature. Parts will go bad (eventually)."
$30 to fix your stove? An absolute STEAL in my opinion. This kit lives in my gear box for as I quote myself again "those "oh sh!t" moments" in your gear's life. MSR makes a quality product and gives you the option to fix things on your own. It's not hard either! Buy this kit and save yourself the headache of a broken stove!
*Note: Always test and inspect your gear thouroughly before ANY trip, an extra few minutes of planning is better than a miserable experience!

This kit has more pump-related parts that your stove will need over & above the annual maintenance kit. It includes the essential rubber pump valve ball & spring that should be checked annually due to fuel exposure. The fuel line cable should also be inspected on an annual basis. Lubricate rubber parts with silicone grease. Don't have a fuel blow out like me because I didn't replace a simple o-ring.

When you're actually somewhere a stove is necessary or replacement would take days--- more than a day out, or in the third world, having spare everything in one spot makes life easier. Fuel in some parts of the world is crap, and you'll be glad to have an extra jet and the wrench to rebuild a stove every night. Only wish would be a self repairing system.

This is a very complete kit. It is something you want to have just in case your stove has problems on the trail. It is one of those pieces of gear you really don't want to have to use but if you do you are glad you have it.

The stove saviour!

When you've made the original investment in a quality stove keeping it in top working order can only be accomplished with the right service kit.MSR offers such a kit and the Expedition is it.With all the right rubber seals, pickups and wrench to do the job.

My 22 year old whisperlite , just this season developed
a leak in the extreme cold. This kit completely upgrades
your old stove , and I especially like the priming cup
sock that is new. ( old models didnt have this )
20 more years of blowtorch !

nothing is worse than not being able to cook dinner after a long hike. i was stuck without a working stove at garibaldi lake until a neighbor lent me his repair kit, and i had the stove working again in 10 minutes. AWESOME.

Stove Service Kit

This product is meant for new stoves. MSR makes new stoves all of the time. It works for exactly what it is intended for. MSR makes some of the best products especially in the stove market and this accessory is no exception.

Well, you will be with this kit if your stove breaks down in the middle of Patagonia. It's got everything you need to get our stove going again if something breaks. Be a Boy Scout. Be prepared!

Negative Reviews:

Only designed for new model!

Do not buy this replacement kit if you do not have the latest model WL stove. I just called MSR and they said my 5yr old stove has a different O-ring and my only option is to buy a whole new pump assembly.

Also, if you are in the same situation and need a replacement (true MSR seals are unavailable to you), try an auto parts store. MSR stated the rings are made of "nitrile" and made it sound like it would be hard to find. I contacted the nearest auto supply store and they said they have various sizes in nitrile. Will try to check it out today.

Seems MSR is more concerned with selling new products than providing service to former customers.

limited

Thanks Salaam for the nitrile tip. Repeat for emphasis: does not include parts for older Whisperlite (International) stoves. Nozzles for pre-shaker jet models not included & not available in stores separately. I did use other parts to replace worn out pump parts, though.
