Bring on the hurricane force winds, because the Patagonia Adze Jacket will cut through them like microwaved butter. This cozy piece of outerwear is the epitome of a perfect soft shell as it is a highly breathable, waterproof, toasty, wind-destroying machine. The most crucial component is the Polartec Windbloc polyester stretch-woven fabric, which works hard to deflect wind and keep ventilation at an all-time high. The durable water repellent finish denies moisture access on the surface to keep you dry when the rain starts coming down. Retaining heat when you need it, and releasing it when you don’t, the microgrid fleece interior is also crazy comfortable, like getting a hug from a teddy bear. A pair of reverse-coil zippered pockets keeps your hands warm and the internal chest pocket protects your essentials. The drawcord hem can be activated to minimize heat loss and seal out the elements when the weather gets wicked. Versatility comes standard as it can be worn as a mid or outer layer depending on the intensity of conditions. For a lightweight, comfortable fleece that performs on any occasion, zip into the Patagonia Adze Jacket.

Amazing Jacket

I picked up this Jacket this past February and it's the first Patagonia product I have owned. I would call myself a value shopper, and after a month of use, it's already worth every penny I spent. The weight, thickness of fabric, warmth, and fit are perfect for me in how I use it, and its versatility is very apparent in recent weeks of outdoor use. First, usage...I use this product for around-town, commuting, and for short walks or activities outside (no longer than 2 hours), in normal Northern-Virginia weather (30-60 F). I don't ski or winter-hike, so no extreme use of this. Fit wise, this might be considered a 'slim fit' by me. I'm 6'1", 185 with a narrow chest so I ordered a Medium by Patagonia's size guide, and the Medium fits me well (though I'm at the top of the Medium range). Jacket lengths (arms and torso) are perfect proportions, and the jacket is tailored in a way that it's form-fitting, yet non-restrictive in movement. I can't understate that enough, because when I first put the jacket on, I was worried, but after over a month of use, it's amazing how close-fitting the jacket is, yet non-restrictive. I could totally use this as a mid-layer over a thin shirt or base-layer, and purchased it with that in mind, but haven't had the chance to yet. Function wide, the jacket is very light-weight, and thin, but surprisingly warm. In-fact, I can't wear it very long indoors because I'll get hot. The last few weeks here have been typical rain/snow with a bit of decent wind, and this jacket has kept up with the changes. I've worn it almost every day, regardless of weather, and it's adjusted to the conditions like a champ. Rain beads off, snow falls off, wind doesn't penetrate the shell, and the jacket keeps me at a good temperature...it's really a great all around jacket.

Have only had this a couple weeks now, haven't had the chance to really test it as I would like as the weather has been so nice here, but the initial impression from when I have used it so far its this is an awesome, light, warm, super versatile piece.
For fit reference I'm 5'10", 160lbs, 40 inch chest with broad shoulders and long arms and the Medium fits great. Nice trim athletic fit, would layer under a shell great.
Great hand feel to the material, much more pliable and quieter than a hardshell, with a little stretch to it, but still feels plenty tough.
Used it out waterskiing early a few mornings, was super impressed with the windproofing cruising around on the chilly lake when everyone else in the boat in a regular hoody was shivering I was totally comfortable.
This was also the only time I got to test the water repellency, everything that splashed on the jacket would bead right up with no real trace of moisture left on the jacket. This was a super limited test though.
After getting out of the water and being really cold I dried off, and tossed this back on over a t shirt and warmed right up. This provides lots of warmth for how light it is, definitely more insulating ability than I expected. Used it a couple nights camping and noticed the same thing.
Overall I really like this thing and think I have found my new go to jacket to toss in the back of the car or bottom of the pack 'just in case' Looking forward to being able to test it fully it once it cools down moving into fall.

Could be great except...

I am 5'7" ~135lbs with a 5'4" wing span. I found past comments regarding excessive sleeve length to be true; could easily lose 1"+ from sleeves and most would approve. I got a size small and overall fit is roomy. Patagonia sizing is strange as their small running shorts are a snug fit around my waist, but the small in this jacket is a bit baggy. Nonetheless, I find the jacket a great addition to my collection. I am using this as an all-purpose biking jacket and it works well in Juneau's cool damp climate. However, pit-zips would be a great addition. For some reason all jacket makers seem to think adding pit-zips to a soft shell means that the garment doesn't breath sufficiently. It's time for jacket manufacturer's to face facts that even the most breathable fabric can't keep up to all temperature regulation needs for active users, so get over it and add the dang PIT-ZIPS! Who knows, you might end up with a best seller on your hands. Performance in wind and rain is excellent. Craftsmanship is also good and heavy duty zippers are a welcome change from lighter weight zippers that are often prone to failure. Interior is luxurious and comfortable, especially around neck and chin, surprisingly so in a performance garment. Overall styling is good as jacket can be used for evening social occassions as well as exercising. Not the lightest or most packable jacket but I didn't buy it to take backpacking...

Great Windblock for Commuters

I bicycle commute daily to and from work in about 30-degree weather. I wear my Adze as an outer layer over a Nano Puff Pullover. The Nano Puff insulates, while the Adze blocks the wind that would otherwise steal all that warmth. It does an especially good job of keeping wind out of vulnerable spots for cyclists such as cuffs, hem and zipper. The cuffs are fastened with velcro, allowing the wearer to adjust them securely regardless of wrist size. The hem has a nice double draw cord. And best of all (IMO) is the zipper liner that prevents wind getting through the zipper. The Adze also has a nice high collar with a soft liner that covers my neck and keeps it comfortable and warm. Keep in mind that the Adze is great for blocking wind, but in cold weather you'll want a good insulating layer underneath it as well. As mentioned, for my insulating layer I use the Nano Puff Pullover which I love. The Nano and the Adze keep me toasty on my commutes. Last night I tried riding in >30 weather with just the Adze, but I got cold quickly. It blocked the wind, but I needed that insulating layer to hold in my body heat. Couple the Adze with an insulating layer, though, and for me it's the perfect layering system. It's worth mentioning that the Adze just looks great. I love wearing it.

Absolutely Wonderful

I was given this jacket as a gift. I received a medium and I am 6' 175lbs with broad shoulders and long arms. I have seen a lot of reviews that this jacket's arms are too long; however, for me this is perfect. I have a hard time finding jackets and shirts that fit well in the chest and also have arms long enough to cover my wrists. I routinely wear my Patagonia M's Down Sweater Vest (also a M) under this as an insulating layer and though it is snug I never feel restricted or claustrophobic. This jacket does a great job cutting the wind, yet on super chilly days a solid insulation layer is necessary. The other day I was in a rush and wore this jacket over my scrubs (short sleeve scrubs with nothing on top or under) in 7 degree weather and could not get warm. I just recently ordered a Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man fleece and am excited to layer these two jackets. I think this combination on cold winter days in Southwestern PA will be the perfect combination especially on my way to the hospital when I am not very active. This jacket is absolutely wonderful and I believe it will be my routine jacket in the spring/Fall.

Nice Softshell and a Good Value

I bought this softshell last month from my local Patagonia store on a whim because my Mountain Guide Softshell is a bit small now for me (and I've had that one for five years#. First, the Polartec Windbloc is nice and it works well. On a windy day up in the Tetons I was warm and toasty. Walking around Jackson Hole later that day with my family I was just right--not too warm, not too cold. The fleece liner is nice. I know some folks have commented about the fit being odd but for me it is just right. I bought mine so that it was large enough to layer underneath. Like other softshells, it works great for that. So far I've used it for some walking and just around town and it works great. I intend on skiing with it and I don't think I will be too disappointed. Some other nice features: the zipper is easy to use, the pockets are just right, and the cuffs have straps #THANK YOU). I mention the latter because last year's Mountain Guide Softshells did not have straps on the cuffs which was not a good feature. In sum, not as technical as my Mountain Guide, but not

Windproof spring and fall jacket

This jacket is is best used as a fall and spring jacket. Once you start to get temps lower than 30F you will start to feel a little chilly. However if you put a fleece or something else warm underneath it you can probably wear it into the 10-20 temp ranges.
The jacket resists water quite well. I used this jack out snow blowing and was constantly getting covered wet snow. The outside of the jacket was soaked but the inside was still dry. However, I don't think the inside would have stayed dry if there was a pack pressing down on the material. It did dry off in a couple hours though.
The sleeves are also long enough to keep your wrists covered no matter what position your are is in.

My only issue with the jacket is that the collar won't stay flat against the jacket. Behind the zipper, about chest high, is a fabric guard to keep anything from coming through the zipper. However, this guard prevents the collar of the jacket from laying down.

Summary: A great jacket for windy cool weather where you won't see anything more than mist to intermittent rain.

+1 for the adze

i've owned a few soft shells from a few different brands; the adze is the favorite. i'm 5'8'' 145lbs & it fits great over everything from a t shirt to a zip t neck to a patagonia down sweater yet is not baggy at all. i've worn it mixed rock & ice climbing, alpine & nordic sking & winter skeet shooting. super durable, great wind resistance, breathes great on ice climbs, warm for cold days fly fishing in the rockies/ alaska, bc, etc. excels during high out put days nordic skiing; wore it yesterday over a t shirt for the 35k Boulder Mountain Tour in idaho- ideal from the single digit temps at the start, to the double digit temps at the finish. in spite of what some other reviewers said regarding the sleeves being too long, the sleeve length is ideal for long reaches typical for above activities. i'd pay a few bucks more for a mesh drop in pocket for a hat, gloves & or climbing skins & a chest pocket for sunnies would be sweet. full disclosure; i'm biased for patagonia's deep commitment for environmental issues. they got it right with this jacket.

excellent multi-use jacket

This is my first technical garment from from Patagonia and I couldn't be happier!
The fit is great, the long arms actually help keep my wrists covered when my arms go over my head. The regular fit lets me layer a sweatshirt, light fleece, or nano puff under it when its colder while still having an athletic fit with full mobility in my arms. I thought I would have to wait to wear it, but with said layers, it has become my primary outer layer this winter. It keeps me dry, protected from the wind, and warm on all but the coldest days here in Chicago.
The stretch fabric helps with comfort and on those extra reachy moves without having too much fabric. Also great when riding my bike around town, the stretch keeps me comfortable when looking over my shoulder.
I cant wait to wear it over a t-shirt in spring on hikes or bouldering on cool mornings.
One thing Patagonia, you need to make a hooded version!

Fits fine if you're a Gorilla!

I can't say much about it since I packed it up for return immediately after I put it on. The sleeves were way too long and the cuffs were not well designed so adjustments were not practical. Also the collar was uncomfortable as I recall reading in another review.
I have had lots of Patagonia tops over the years and I have noticed this extra long sleeve issue in a few of my newer purchases. I was able to have shirt sleeves shortened but this is not the case with a jacket like this. By the way, my arms are a bit longer than average...

Adze jacket fit...

I ordered a Medium adze jacket as other Patagonia jackets i have. Apparently in 2013 the medium is longer and thinner than before. Really tight fit around waist. Alternatively, i ordered the Alpine Jacket in medium, although they said both have regular fit, the alpine jacket was 1" wider at waist. Company needs to tighten up on consistency for sizing. no problem on the return

Sleeves fit for a Baboon

I loved the design of this jacket with its windproof and waterproof exterior, but when I put it on the sleeves covered my knuckles! I have been a 'L'arge for over 50 years. I'm 6' 1", 200 lbs. I can't imagine why they made the sleeves so long. I had to return it.

not good

this jacket could be cool, if it fit properly, i read the reviews and still went with it, ...it does not stick with patagoinas traditional sizing chart, i know what size i wear in most items from patagonia but this just simpy is a strange fitting jacket.. it is on it way back.

What's Up With The Fit?

The fabric seems nice, stretchy, and warm but what happened with the fit? I often find 'regular' fit Patagonia tops to be too big through the body, but the Adze (much like the Solar Wind) is oddly small in the upper chest, through the shoulders, and armpits. I'm typically attracted to the 'slim fit' stuff...I live in my R1's and R2's, and am not a big person by any means (5'11", 140lbs), but felt like I could do an Incredible Hulk impersonation while wearing this jacket, and I was only wearing a short sleeved polo shirt at the time. Forget about layering unless you size up (IE: if your R1 is a small, your Adze better be a medium). I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything in excess of a Cap3 top under it. When zipped all the way up, the collar and buttons of my polo were (uncomfortably) jammed firmly against me so use as a casual jacket under a collared shirt might be trouble as well. Can't comment on real world performance, as I never got it out of the fitting room. The price point and specs are attractive, so if it fits you (and your needs), I'm guessing you'll like it. I was hoping to use at as a shell for my R1 & R2 when the wind or cold made a vest an insufficient outer layer...no dice. One additional note, the 'Hickory' color looks pretty brown in the picture, but I'd call it closer to green in person. Surprisingly attractive color, actually.

Nice fabric but have a few flaws

Upon the release of the Adze jackets, I immediately went to Patagonia store to try it on. The materials feels great and durable. I like the idea of a windbloc material with the R1 square grid fleece on the inside. Unfortunately, there are a couple flaws in the jacket so I could not keep this jacket: 1. Sizing/fit is strange. I am a typical M size for all my patagonia clothings. For the Adze jacket, I am neither a S nor M. Somehow the fit just isn't right. Either the length is to short (in S) or the chest to large and sleeve is too long (in M). I went to multiple stores and tried this jacket in different size many many times (because i really want to get one) but I still couldn't find a right size that really fits me . 2. The internal zip pocket is extremely small to be practical. I really don't understand the logic of making such a tiny internal zip pocket. It is at best good for storing an energy bar . I can't store wallets or cell phone in the internal pocket. If they want to make it a minimalist jacket, they might eliminate internal pocket. But if they include an internal pocket, how about decent size one? Hope they will improve in these areas in the new season and I'll definitely give it a try again.
fchai at Patagonia on 08/28/2012

Well constructed, but design has flaws

I've been looking for a good looking technical jacket that can double as a sharp jacket when traveling and also use on back country hikes. I was willing to pay twice this price for an Arcteryx Gamma MX, but couldn't find one to check out in person.

I love Patagonia products and the Adze seemed to fill most of my requirements. Looked good and in the store seemed to fit well. I had to order one size up from what was in the store.

While it looks good, the fabric is great, the sleeves are almost two inches longer than normal. The cuffs are too small. To put on the jacket the velcro has to be opened up fully. The sleeve interior is "sticky" when wearing capilene expedition wt layers. Even with the velcro tightened down, it rides over my watch and then there is too much material to be able to pull it back and see my watch.

I may still return it. To wear the jacket, I have to roll the cuffs back. Additionally, the collar has a "zipper garage". It is too stiff and hard and pokes me in the neck. Very irritating.

I could really love this jacket. Everything else is perfect. But, the sleeves in particular make it almost unusable. I've never had a jacket with sleeves this long.
A7Dave at REI on 02/02/2013

Disappointed...

Let me first say that I LOVE Patagonia and this is a good jacket, but I was disappointed in what are a few annoying design flaws in my view. First, the jacket is warm, good looking and well made. What surprised me were the velcro cuffs on the sleeves are uncomfortable and inconvenient. There is no elastic in them so you have to fasten and unfasten/refasten them EVERY time you take it on and off. What a pain in the butt...! Plus, once the vlecro is fastened there is an annoying little fold of fabric under the velcro closure that constantly rubs against your wrist inside the cuff. On top of that, the inside of the sleeves seem to grip, cling to and twist my under layer every time. I am constantly adjusting and contorting to get my sweater underneath to lay flat and not feel twisted in the sleeves. After 2 weeks of fighting and being annoyed with this jacket it is going back.
Mussier at Patagonia on 02/10/2013

High quality, but needs a little tweaking.

I had high expectations, but was a little disappointed. The windstopper material worked well, and the jacket exhibited high quality and workmanship--as is typical of Patagonia products. The problem I had was trying to wear it over a long sleeve dress shirt. I had a lot of trouble getting my arms in and out of the sleeves--the arms were too tight, and I do not have big arms. When wearing it over a short sleeve T-shirt, my arms started getting clammy and stuck to the inside. This issue is becoming more common with a number of products that I have purchased lately. It would be a 5-star rating if the arms were a little more roomy.
HJM2 at Patagonia on 09/01/2013

Excellent materials, but an odd fit.

The materials and stitching on this piece are very nice. Regrettably the fit is very strange. The arms are very long in comparison to what other companies make, and the pectoral fit is quite tight. In conjunction with this, the stomach region is very loose.

If you have long arms, and a tummy this jacket might fit you very well. However, I have a relatively normal-athletic build, and it fits me strangely. I'm 5'10", 155 lbs, and the medium was too tight through the pecs and goofily loose through the stomach.

I love Patagonia's footwear and hats, and the torrentshell suited me well in field research. This piece just didn't fit me.

Paintbrush Red is more like ORANGE

I really wanted to buy this jacket in red for my husband. However, the "Paintbrush Red" is more like ORANGE, and a very bright one! The true color turned out to be much more orange than the picture and the name showed, making this jacket unsuitable to wear to work or around town. Too bad because the jacket is otherwise very attractive in terms of both function and style. If only this jacket could come in true red (like ripe strawberry)!

Bad fit, fine jacket

I really like this jacket but the patterning/fit is appalling. I typically wear a Patagonia men's small with no issues but with the 2012 version of this jacket in a small the armholes were binding and the sleeves slightly too long. A medium was massively too large. If you have long arms and almost no upper body muscle mass this might be a good fit. If they fix the fit it is a very nice jacket

Best little jacket

This jacket works very well with our mild winters(Arkansas), I thought the sleeves were kind of long but when layering such as putting over a hoody, it does an excellent job. Blocks wind well , would enjoy a pocket on sleeve though.Overall I would recommend this to you for just about anything.

Sizing is way off

I tried this jacket on in a Patagonia store. I am a solid medium. The medium was huge and the sleeves were to my fingers, a small fit great in the arms but the chest and shoulders were tight( I wear a 39-40 suit jacket). I wanted one but decided to pass.
