The art of simplicity

I know there's often a lot of debate out there about what's a real soft shell -- to me, Patagonia nailed it with the Simple Guide Hoody. I've got heavier soft shell jackets in my closet that blur the line toward insulated and fleece, and I've got lighter, thinner soft shells (my beloved Ready Mix still holding together and looking as good as new#, but the Simple Guide Hoody is just right. The stretch-woven fabric is tough as nails, so I'm not afraid to layer under this piece for dead-of-winter activities, but it's also light and breathable enough to serve as a go-to piece for quick trips out and about around town. I have a Traverse jacket which I think is one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing I own, and the Simple Guide Hoody is very similar in terms of weight -- just a touch thicker and thankfully hooded which makes it a little more versatile for colder temperatures -- and just as stretchy and snuggly. It took a couple of tries to get the sizing right -- although it's not classified as slim fit I found I had to go up a size to XL -- and the sleeves are a little long, but the velcro cuffs are a nice feature and the cut is definitely not baggy. The pockets are well-positioned and have surprising capacity, and the hood works well both with and without helmet, with a nice built-in visor. I'm a little concerned that Patagonia might be getting away from some of the more paired-down soft shells like the Simple Guide and the Traverse #like the discontinued Ready Mix and super comfortable Ascensionist). I notice that the latest lineup has a hooded version of the popular Adze, which is nice, but that's a completely different jacket, heavier and virtually windproof. My advice is if you're worried about the Simple Guide Hoody not being windproof enough, pair it with a Houdini and you have an excellent light-weight combination for a variety of conditions. Sometimes Simple is all you need.

A very versatile piece

Simple guide hoody , to me, it's the right balance between breatheability and windproofness. The material feels great and the cut is good. The truth is, there has to be some compromise between windproofness and breatheability. If it's very windproof, it would not be that breatheable. If it's super breatheable, it wouldn't be super windproof. Wearing any windstopper or windbloc jackets make me sweat very quickly and very uncomfortable. (note: making you sweat doesn't necessarily mean you warm in a cold weather). The simple guide hoody turns out to be perfect for me. It is highly breatheable. I have never felt stuffy in it. But it still offers a decent amount of windproofness. So, on the spectrum between the two, it's on the breatheable side. The cut of the simple guide hoody looks very good and it's not boxy looking. It's more slim cutting than the alpine guide jacket. The garment is lightweight and thin, so layering does not add too much bulk. It is very versatile as you can wear it in a wide range of temperature depending on how you layer. The fabric feels soft and quite durable. It has some interesting texture and doesn't look like other cheap polyester materials. Overall, i am very happy with my purchase.

Great softshell

I got this primarily for as a skiing garment. It breaths beautifully and is very lightweight. Very pleased as it replaced a well loved but old (ten years) soft shell that was delaminating. It is cut trim but is simple and allows for layering. In the Cascades, a soft shell with insulation ends up in the pack most of the time as it is simply too warm. Have worn this garment on 5 occasions and it has been great.

Best lightweight Jacket

Planned on using this jacket as a light layer for overnight fishing trips, it is so comfortable, I now use it as my all around cool night jacket. Great style and made well, everything you expect from Patagonia.
