I needed a pack for daily usage that was padded for a laptop during the week and could take a beating on the weekend. This bag is perfect. It seems like Patagonia gathered people from all walks of life and sent them out with normal plain jane packs and told them to write notes on what would have been nice to have because they aced this pack. A small top fleece lined zipper pouch which is awesome if you travel as you can stowe it under the plane seat in front of you and still have access to your phone, iPod, etc without making a scene and making the person next to you mad. The front vertical zipper is a great feature as well as it makes things of all shapes and sizes easily accessible. I also liked the straps and all the loops is had to attach carabiners to for additional items if need be. The laptop pouch is perfect in size and still gives ample space for other items as well. As others have mentioned on the weekends loose the backpack and put in a bladder and it has an opening for a water straw for your camelbak. Again, this thing rocks and holds a load of stuff. As an example (because when I read reviews I like stories) I recently went to the UK, in my pack, I packed a laptop, external HD, mouse, cellphone, iPod, phone, wallet, sigg bottle, 6 packs of trail mix, charging cords, binder, pair of jeans, socks, 2 boxers, polo, tshirt, and toiletries... all this and I had no problem getting it under the plane seat in front of me and it was weighted well with the straps that I was not too fatigued at the end of my flights... again, great pack!
The pack is not heavily padded to protect every electronic gadget available. (I have a pack for that.) It is lightweight, roomy, and strong. I put the Macbook Pro 15" with power cord, etc., in its slot with room to spare, then proceeded to stuff the bag full of a long weekend's worth of clothes - toiletries, underwear, pyjamas, two pairs of jeans, three shirts, and a pair of shoes. I bought this pack because I go to Sierra Leone regularly. I carry my pack through airports and the jungle. I need a bag light enough and big enough to carry the laptop, underwear, toiletries, several lappas and tanks, a dream sack, a towel, two pair of sandals, pjs, and my lesson plans. After being stuck a few times with my old, super-padded, heavier, less roomy bag, I was determined to get something better, and this bag is it. NB: I bought the magenta as it was on sale. My 21-yr old grandson was a little hesitant to carry it, thus earning himself a lecture on homophobia. If the color would be a problem for you, try a different one.
I purchased this backpack as the companion piece to my MLC Patagonia travel bag for a solo 18 day trip to Australia and Tasmania. The travel bag was great (it held my clothes), but it was the backpack that was the workhorse on this trip.I had it stuffed to the gills with books, binoculars, diving mask, water bottles, showering stuff, and granola bars and it performed better than I anticipated. The outer most zipped pocket is a bit lame, but worked well for travel documents. The backpack fit very well when packed (although when empty it rode a bit high on my back, as other reviewers have said) . I comfortably lugged both pieces of luggage hither and yon including to Tasmania in the rain and from the trains station in Sydney, Australia up the hill to a hotel across from the Botanical Gardens. The bags looked tight and gave the impression I knew what I was doing (but looks can be deceiving). I highly recomment the backpack and the travel bag, and I just purchased another set for my daughter.
I was looking for the perfect bag to carry a bunch of items on a week long trip. By a bunch of items I mean, DSLR camera plus extra lens, shell, journal, guide book, glasses, water bottle, umbrella, AND THE BEST PART it doubled as a diaper bag. Yes, after all that, there was still enough room for 8 diapers for the day, blanket, change of baby clothes, wipes, toys, snacks, etc. I am really impressed with how the bag distributes the weight. Even packed full it still feels light. I needed a bag big enough, not huge. This bag is the perfect fit for me, 5'10" and fit my wife, 5'4", well. Super comfortable, easy to adjust, and indestructible. Tough bag, handled rain just find. Went with the black, I like that it's more discrete. The colorful bags look fun but I just felt like disguising the zippers was safer for where we were going. My wife and I fought over who got to wear it, it's that cool.
I was really excited to get this bag after reading all the nice reviews. I bought the Tuscan Olive color. The colors turned out nice, I thought the pockets were all very functional, the bag is overall super good looking, but I put on the backpack and the straps seem to be too close together- it presses down on a really weird spot at the base of my neck even when there is nothing or very little in it (it is a very very lightweight bag). I am a 5'8", 130 lb college girl. This should not happen. I was sad to have to return it :( If you usually where your backpack with the straps let way out down your back, this might be a good bag for you.
