caveat, this is a new purchase from Backcountry and has only, so far, been worn on a few windy afternoons. A word on sizing - this jacket runs true to size if you like a relatively narrow fit. if you plan to do any significant layering underneath, you might consider buying a size larger than you ordinarily would. i sized up and was pleased with the fit.
top to bottom, a great jacket. it's a full-featured heavyweight that might not appeal to the minimalist - i'm guessing it weighs about 24 ounces, where a minimalist hard shell might be 13-15 ounces. it's easy to adjust the hood, and i like having a wire in the brim. if you want to roll up the hood and keep it out of the way, it has one of the best hood-roll flaps i have seen. with the extra weight come more details. four very usable outer pockets, two inside mesh pockets, one zippered, the other for a water bottle. It also has zippered armpit vents, which i like, but my experience with eVent is that one need not vent as much. the front zipper is backed by a flap, and all the zippers are water resistant. tightening the waist-level elastic cord was initially confusing, the pull tab and cordlock is inside and at the back of the larger outer pockets.
this jacket makes me look forward to bad weather.
Bought this jacket last winter and have now had a chance to test it in the snow and in the mountains. I love the hood, it has great visibility, the wire brim is nice to have to adjust the arc of the hood. It will get warped when you pack it but you can simply reshape it, i don't know how this will hold up over time. The material is very tough, and the quality is fantastic. This is my first eVent shell and so far i have no cons to list and DWR finish seems to be holding up. The fit is good and i seem to have good range of motion when skiing and mountaineering. It may weigh a bit more than some comparable Arc. shells but the jacket is built for harsh rough conditions. A point to note, i'm 5'10" 165, athletic build with broad-ish shoulders. I ordered a medium. The overall fit is good and not to baggy, but I sense the shoulders can be a tad tight if I layer a lot underneath it.
I've used this jacket for the past two years after a slew of gore-tex jackets which all seemed to wear out prematurely- losing their water proofness and tearing.
Primarily I use it for ski mountaineering and also easier alpine climbing. The jacket is cut in such a way that the sleeves are plenty long enough when reaching above your head and the tail doesn't ride up either. The pit-zips are large and offer really decent ventilation on the skin track.
One major con, and the reason why I only gave it 4/5 stars is that the hood doesn't fit either of my helmets (Sweet's Rooster and Grivel air-tech)
