An adjustable and helmet compatible hood will give you that extra protection without sacrificing safety and the Recco Avalanche Rescue System is there when you need it. Tons of pockets! You'll have a radio pocket and wrist utility pocket as well with a goggle cloth included. Thumb loops provide an extra bit of warmth and a stretch powder skirt with clip integration keeps that snow off your back. The North Face Men's Free Thinker Jacket is the most technical shell in the Summit Series, meaning you have one kickass jacket for your backcountry excursions this winter. A 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro shell, fully taped seams, and water-resistant zippers over all external entries give guaranteed waterproof and breathable protection at the highest degree. One of the chest pockets has an insulated pocket for your phone, but when you're out of range—which is highly plausible depending on how far you like to venture out of bounds—an elastic binding exists in the other chest pocket to hold your gigantic radio.

An active fit gives you the full range of motion you need to perform at your highest level, and it leaves room for mid-layers on the coldest days. Underarm vents let out some steam when you hike up those powder-capped peaks. A powder skirt blocks snow when you're knee-deep in the fluff, and the hood either slides over your helmet or cinches tightly across your head when the winds come up on the ridge. Thumbloops keep the sleeves in place and warm your palms up, and the adjustable hem retains any warmth your mid-layers offer. A Recco avalanche rescue reflector helps Recco-equipped ski patrols find you in an emergency on the days you decide to ski inbounds.

Positive Reviews:

Not quite up to the level expected

This is an excellent jacket at a lower price point. For this level of jacket from The North Face, I expected perfection, or closer to it. The good:
Lots of pockets.
Hand warmer pockets are below any waist strap from a pack.
Goggle cleaner in sleeve zip pocket (a huge bonus).
Hood adjusts two ways, pull back on sides and pull back on top.
Jacket is a bit longer than most shells, covering my butt completely. The nits (there shouldn't be any nits to pick):
The front zipper does not zip up from the bottom. With a longer jacket, this is even more necessary, especially for use around town when you may need to get to a wallet in your back pocket.
The front zipper also sticks at the neck, requiring two attempts to close all the way ... every time.
Sleeves are too long. I needed a large for shoulder room and room for fleece. But, at 5'8", the sleeves are way longer than they need to be. A taller person might appreciate this. Perhaps the medium needs to be cut a bit bigger in the shoulders.
The hood gets crumpled with normal storage hanging in a closet.

Best jacket I've ever owned

Just spent a week neck deep in powder at Solitude Utah and another at St Moritz with my freethinker and it kept the elements at bay better than any other jacket I've ever had. Powder skirt is top notch, the Gore-Tex pro material was a good choice. The sleeves run long for the jacket size which I actually liked.
The jacket is also very comfortable and breaths beautifully while blocking outside moisture.
On another note, it's a very stylish cut that attracts many looks and quite a few inquiries.

This jacket is the best I've ever had. Living in Whistler it can get wet and the 3 layer Gore-Tex keeps me dry. Since I helped design this jacket I'm a little biased however we designed it to be the best. Great pockets, features, style and fit. It truly has it all. Paired up with the Freethinker bib pant and I'm in heaven.

the ultimate jacket

I live in the lower desert of Southern CaliforniaI walk at night when it is chilly and sometimes rainingthe coGortex Pro shell fits every weather condition. I am more than satisfied. Don't let the price scare you. It has a lifetime warranty. I also recommend washing it before wearing.

Negative Reviews:

Not up to scratch :(

I went to write this review and read another review and completely agree with the following points.
Pros:
Lots of pockets (for Goretex Pro shell products)
Great Hood Cons:
Definitely needs a double zip system for the main zipper.
Front zipper does indeed get stuck and needs 2 hands to do up to get it all the way up (because its really stiff so the collar stays down and doesn't want to zip up) And my main issue:
Bad quality - buttons and clips I had the jacket and wore it about 3 times when I found that one of the buttons on the powder skirt ripped out of the fabric (and is now still stuck to the other side of the button).
Wore it again the other day (about 3 weeks into buying it) and was hooking the powder skirt onto my pants with one of the 3 hooks, and the hook ripped out of the powder skirt completely. I know it is under warranty, but a jacket this new and at this price, shouldn't be falling apart after such brief wearings! Doesn't cut the mustard. Extremely disappointed. Definitely wouldn't recommend to anyone and has made me seriously doubt TNF quality.

Exmoor 1, Gods 0

When I bought the jacket, the advertising blurb stated that it would take everything the Weather Gods could throw at it. Being as I live on Exmoor (plenty of Pagan weather gods down this way), it sounded perfect. I've recently re-proofed the jacket (washed in NikWax TechWash, then proofed it using Nikwax TX Direct, then gently tumble dried according to GoreTex's instructions. I've just been out for about 3.5 hours with my dog over the nearby hills and the result was: bottom half covered with Berghaus AQ2 - perfectly dry, top half covered with Freethinker jacket - damp patches from the shoulders down to about mid-chest. This is the second time I've re-proofed it, with the same results. I've given up and bought Musto's MPX jacket as a substitute. Clearly the weather gods down my way are a bit more aggressive than those on the North Face payroll.
