Therm-a-Rest NeoAir All-Season Sleeping Pad Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

I had called and talked with one of the Backcountry gear experts. I explained that I was an insomniac and tried a lot of different pads to no avail. I am a side sleeper, my hip or shoulder always bottom out on the ground through the pad, this causes me to wake up sore and I can't go back to sleep. The gear guru assured me I would not have this problem with this pad. This past week I had a chance to try it out. For me I found it took 17 breaths to blow it up each time consistantly that I tried. I am 5'10" 185lbs, muscular build being a trainer. While another 6" in width would be perfect I was very comfortable sleeping on this pad. I did not bottom out my hip/shoulder as with previous pads. I actually slept through the night which is rare for me. I was hesitant at first but he reassured me I would be happy so I took him at his word, at present I can not argue with him as it worked as he described (something I rarely find these days). It packs down small, taking up little space Granted this was my first outing with it and time may tell a different story, however I am grading it based on the fact that it solves the concerns I had when I called for advice. My hip/shoulder does not bottom out and I don't see that changing in the future short of a leak. I camp alone and therefore have no complaints from a noisey standpoint although did not find this to be a problem myself. Jeff

Impressive

We all knew it was compact, but this is impressively warm and light too! I was admittedly skeptical of the performance claims online, but the first time I gingerly crawled on, it felt like there was a heating pad under my back within about 30 seconds. The horizontal baffles are more comfortable and seem to resist downhill slippage a little more than my previous insulated airpad. The pumpsack idea took longer than it should have to figure out, and was just kind of awkward. I still had to firm up the mattress with a few lung puffs, as you can't build up quite enough pressure in the bag. That said, I will definitely use it since it minimizes the introduction of condensation into the interior, which can be a huge problem in cold weather due to ice formation on the inside. This isn't the lightest of the NeoAir line, but for 4-season comfort, 16 or 17 oz. (depending on the size) is quite respectable. I also have hopes it will be more durable than the XLite, given previous reviewers' comments. However, I haven't trail tested it yet, and that remains to be seen. Packs down very easily and there's no need to worry about compressing the fill as with insulated pads thanks to the reflective structures inside. I will say that it isn't as quiet as the downfilled airpad I demoed before choosing this one for the weight savings. Overall, if you can't afford a pad unique to every venture, I'd highly recommend this as a "quiver of one." Can't wait to try it on my backpacking trip next week...

Awesome product

I needed to replace my lost, old Thermarest self inflating pad, so I began my research. When I discovered the Neoair All Season, I knew I found my next pad. I got the large because I'm built like a football player (6", 250 pounds, broad shoulders). For the extra five inches of width the weight and pack size are a no brainer. The large still packs so small and weighs so little that I am stunned. The stuff sack doubles as an inflation device, and if done correctly, really makes having a non self inflating pad no big deal. With practice, you can inflate the pad using the stuff sack in less than 2 to 3 minutes. Just follow included instructions. Addition of a complete repair kit was also an awesome touch. I have a bad back with multiple surgeries under my belt and this pad is perfect for me. Extremely pleased with the Neoair All Season. Warm, comfortable, light, durable fabric, and really packs down so small. Pricey, but worth the extra change.

No melt on snow

LOVE IT! Snowcamping: A Prolight 4 (prolite plus) always allowed too much radiation into the snow and was cold on a winter's day. Plus they took up too much space in the pack. I switched to a Downmat for the warmth & protection, it was great but heavy and bulky. Once the NeoAir came out I moved onto a NeoAir plus a Z-Rest, this was warm, redundant and light but a bulky and akward setup for moving fast. I jumped at NeoAir All Season and love it. After several nights on the snow with it now I can say i'll be reluctant to go back to the downmat or dual pad combo. Not only is it light but it packs small and is really quite warm. I've never heard it during the night but if you are sharing a tent with a very sensitive sleeper I imagine that they might notice you moving on the pad. Overall a really slick sleeping pad.

Good nights sleep

I took this pad out on a 4 day 3 night pack trip. I'm not a big fan of tents in any thing but severe winter weather. I sleep in a hammock and may be through a rain fly on if its threatening rain. This pad worked well for this use. It held its shape in my ENO DoubleNest Hammock and gave me a nice flat service to sleep on. I felt no heat loss through the mat and stayed comfortable down to the low 40's. Never got hot so never flipped it over to use the lighter insulation value. Like most matts I did slip to the low end of my hammock easily compensated by slightly lowering the head. Over all good mat.

Warm & Comfortable

If you use the mat when the temps stay above freezing, you can blow it up easily to inflate it. If it's going to be cold and you're concerned about your breath freezing in the mat overnight, you should use the storage sack to inflate it. It takes about 15 minutes and lots of patience. You can probably use your breath if you need to give the mat a little more firmness when it's substantially inflated. But it's worth the trouble. I am 5'4", an average sized woman, and I bought the large size, 25"x77". As a winter camper, the extra room was a real plus - my arms and legs stayed on the mat all night.
Merlin at Campmor on 11/11/2011

I've had this sleeping pad for a couple seasons and it works great for keeping you off the ground. I'm 5'6" and its a bit narrow so I suggest getting a Long if you want the extra room. Otherwise Regular is perfect! Its meant for backpacking so they make them smaller than you may think. It comes with a bag to help pressure into the pad but I have never been able to make that work efficiently so I just blow right into the mouth piece and that works great. I've taken this on the river and camping. Still a great pack if you plan to be out for a couple of days!

Thermarest NeoAir All Season Mat

Best mat I have used in 40 years of backpacking. Comfortable enough to use without removing undergrowth but even more so with a cleared surface. It is noisy as I do move some while sleeping. Packs small - can now store sleeping bag and mat in bag compartment. I need to be careful - just might become one of those light weight campers. Inflation does take some effort - more than just unrolling and throwing on ground but rolling to get air in foot of bag makes things easier. Could not use in old style chair. Overall, a very worthwhile purchase.
Vince at Campmor on 08/08/2013

This is a great pad, it packs down a little shorter, but a little wider than a nalgene bottle. It's very light and doesn't take up much space inside my pack. I've used this Jan. 2012 up at Priest lake, ID on our annual snow camp out and it kept me plenty warm combined with a zero degree sleeping bag. I love the fact that it's over 2" thick, not sure that it's 2.5", but maybe I didn't have it all the way inflated. Either way it's the best nights sleep that I've had on a camping trip.

Tobias Kai Looper at Backcountry.com on 12/03/2012

I just spent ten nights in the Bugaboos (BC) using this pad. Very warm and super comfortable! I still carry a short foam pad just in case of a puncture and to protect the neo air (did the same with my regular thermarest too). The material is tough, but thin, so you have to be careful with it. I wouldn't use it w/o a groud sheet, etc. I didn't use the silly pump bag. I work as a climbing/mtn guide and spend many nights out, and this pad is the most comfortable that I have had yet!

Chris Murray at Backcountry.com on 08/02/2012

Negative Reviews:

3 NeoAirs, 3 leaks. 3 field patches, 3 more leaks. Spare yourself the warranty returns and your tentmates the incessant noisy crinkling. Being stuck halfway through a walk across Iceland with all your patches used and no working sleeping pad is unpleasant. Exped SynMat UL7 is a much better choice, from a size, durability and insulation standpoint; Nemo Astro if you want to go heavier.
