The Arcteryx Altra 75 LT Pack is a solid backpacking/trekking pack that is designed for 3-7 day long hauls. They have come out with new suspension and fabric technologies over the years and this pack utilizes all of them. I've used the Altra 75 LT on winter camping trips with snowshoes lashed onto the sides (when not lashed to my feet) and I've used it for summer camping trips to the beach, loaded up with like 80lbs (including a 30 case of beer under the adjustable lid). The combination of the Load Transfer Disc™ and C2 suspension with Gridlock™ shoulder straps (which adjust for a custom fit) allows it to hold everything perfectly, evenly distributing the weight across the hips and shoulders. The kangaroo pocket with a "U" zipper allows you to access your pack's contents without pulling everything out.

Positive Reviews:

I love this pack

This pack is brilliant, but it has two flaws: slipping belt buckle and off center internal hydration pouch. Both of these design flaws are easily fixable. Change out the buckle or do what I did and add two belts guides and rethread the belt so it operates as the cross compression system (I.e osprey) verses the straight standard buckle clasp. Regarding the hydration is simply weird to locate it on the side...also the zippered pouch is to small. This pouch is best used as an internal pocket for smaller items...not water. I suspended a very very light weight osprey hydration day pouch in the center that I pulled from by crescent 110 osprey pack. It works great and keeps the weight in the center where it should be. I would love to know why it was designed on the side and designed too would be interesting to hear the contrived logic. :).

Here is the deal...this pack kicks butt. The kangaroo pouch is awesome, the top access pockets are perfect and located straight up so you can have easy access. The pack is designed for multiple day backpacking and it has plenty of capacity to meet the need. The rotating hip belt is simply the best. It really reduces hip fatigue as well as allow for full mobility when scrambling over boulders, etc. In addition, the suspension system makes the weight vanish. My pack weighs 35 at the trailhead with food and water and my comforts like my butterfly chair, etc. My base weight is 22 pounds. The weight is so well distributed to the hips that you forget about the pack. It is very comfortable. The side zipper access and the compression straps make this pack very easy to access and pack. The adjustable shoulder straps are also very can, on the fly, adjust wider or narrower, higher or lower...very easy, very quick. If you are getting a sore spot after many miles...adjust the strap away from the spot and you are good to go..

I have given it 5 stars. Even though the two flaws I mentioned may warrant a star, the fact is the pack is awesome and the flaws minor and 5 it is. I have used many packs over the years and my two favorites are the osprey crescent 110, which I recently retired because of weight, and the arcteryx altra 75. Ater many miles, I highly recommend this pack.

Solid Pack

I figured I would start writing reviews since I base my purchases off them. Time to start giving back.

I took this pack out on the AT last winter for an extended 5 day trip. It held the winter load out very comfortably on my back. We had snow and rain, and I didnt have any wet spots before putting a rain cover on it to be safe. The material is good quality, the nylon ripstop kind which I like in case you rip your gear on rocks or trees.

At first I didnt appreciate the zippers on the sides (Big U Shape) to get into the pack for things, but I soon learned its the only way to go. You can drop the pack, get inside, and get something from the bottom in less than 2 minutes tops. It helps you organize better than other "top down" styles.

The suspension is pretty awesome. Its highly adjustable, which is really important when carrying 40lbs+ over multiple days in nasty weather on rough terrain. Just a tug here, or a cinch there and your pack weight is focused on different areas of your body and greatly reduces fatigue, and almost totally eliminates pressure points.

I have also taken this out to multiple mountain day trips in southern california, and its a great pack. I have a few others, mostly gregory brand that are also great, but this one is my new "go to" bag. Arcteryx gear is worth the extra cash if you are going to use this on a regular basis. I dont expect to replace this pack for a very long time.

I am only giving it a 4, because I feel a 5 is reserved for something you need to immediately run to the store and buy after reading a review about it. Buy this pack with confidence.

Good Pack But Needs Improvement

I've taken this pack on several over-nighters and I recently took this pack on a 50 mile week long journey through the Uintas in Utah. Overall it is a great pack with a lot of great features, but its main plus is the hip belt. Arcteryx's special foam hip belts are simply the most comfortable out there. The rotating hip belt is really great, as the pack moves with your body as you walk, almost becoming part of your body. This pack sheds two pounds over my last Arcteryx pack, the Bora 80.

I do have some complaints: There is quite a bit of extra pockets and straps that should be eliminated to save weight. The big pocket on the back/center of the pack has no real use and adds a lot of weight. I prefer to put most of my gear in the main compartment. I like the two side pockets and the top pockets. I would love to see an Arcteryx pack with all the comfort and padding of the Altra series but with simpler design and lighter weight. This thing needs to be streamlined. Using carbon fiber instead of aluminum might also cut some weight.

My final complaint is that the hip belt tends to squeak. It was more of a problem with rain, and when the pack was more fully loaded, but this has to be addressed by Arcteryx. I would still buy the pack again because I love the hipbelt and suspension, but an expensive pack like this should never ever squeak.

Overall you will be hard pressed to find a more comfortable pack. Every pack has its positives and negatives.

Unique design that works

I created a YouTube video about my belt upgrade using Velcro. This pack's belt system was strange at first, but now, I would go without it.

I've used the pack a few times and I do miss having more pockets on the outside of the pack. Also I would have added a clip to the hold up the badder in the water compartment. New design I'd hope that Arcteryx would adopt would be to put the water compartment in the center of the pack and not one side.

Other than that I would buy this one and we'll see about the next design.

Excellent pack

This is a great pack. I have had no problems with the waist belt slipping, or with squeaky suspension (grease it). It will allow you to carry 40-50 lbs. comfortably. I especially like the top lid pockets and the front kangaroo pocket. The only criticisms I have are that I wish they had left out the large zipper to access to the main compartment (heavy, added potential problems with breakage, and I never use it), and I don't understand why it didn't come with ice axe attachments. Also, it's not exactly lightweight at 5 1/2 lbs.

Neutral Reviews:

A keeper with a few issues

Manufacturer's video tutorials show removal and maintenance of waist belt and lubrication.

Lubricant was not included with mine.

From the very first trip I had squeaking that became increasingly loud and annoying until I oiled the joint.

I didn't experience belt slip as others have mentioned, probably becuase the 2" side release waist belt buckle broke before I got to the trail register and I had to tie the belt for the rest of the trip. You really have to want a pack off before you're willing to go through that process.

I replaced the buckle with an Equinox 2" buckle that does not slip. I could have replaced it with an OEM through customer service, but why get one that slips?

For a large pack with good load support it's quite light.
The zippers are mostly coated and comparments seem to stay very dry.
The capacity seems generous, beyond rated capacity.
Clip to retain valuables in top pocket.
Side hydration resorvoir has advantages for stowing bulky items in center of pack and my compartment does have a retention snap.

The pivoting waist belt is not a gimmick and does seem to reduce achy hips.

My favorite feature is the ability to adjust the top shoulder strap attachments for height and width. They accommodate wider shoulders very well.

Wanted to love this bag

I wanted to love this bag. It is high quality and has many good features. But for the price it should be perfect. The hood does not convert to a day pack which is a minor annoyance. More importantly, the hydration pouch is on the side of the pack. This makes it very difficult to get even weight distribution. Even if you manage to counterweight it at the beginning of the day, as you drink 3 liters of water (6.6 lbs) it becomes unbalanced.
