Black Diamond Deploy Shovel -
Check out the Black Diamond Deploy 3 Shovel if you want a design that's light, small, fast, and simple. Couloir Magazine was so impressed they gave it their 2006 Degisn Innovations Award. The Deploy 3 Shovel's handle collapses into the blade for a tiny 17.3in package that's entirely self-contained. Just give the handle a pull, and its trapezoidal shape ensures it slides and locks into place. No more messing with frozen buttons or handle parts buried in your pack. In addition to this Black Diamond shovel's amazing simplicity, it weighs only 20oz, making it a great choice for alpine climbing and lightweight backcountry tours.

Sizing:

  • Collapsible handle easily slides and locks into place, allowing length to adjust from 24.8 inches (extended) to 17.3 inches (collapsed)

Weather and Wind:

  • Flat-bottomed design digs smooth snow pit walls with flat surfaces
  • Steep-walled 14 x 8.5 inch blade allows maximum snow transport

Comfort:

  • Unique "T&D" handle creates control and comfort, whether using mitts, gloves, or bare hands

Manufactured:

  • Made of 6000 Series aluminum (shaft and blade)

Features:

  • Engages in a fraction of a second
  • Curved, trapezoidal shaft nests in the blade of the shovel
  • Hybrid D/T handle
Al's Sports
Black Diamond Deploy Shovel 3. Built for backcountry travelers and first responders, these shovels deploy instantaneously for emergency situations. Utilizing our trapezoidal, curved-shaft design, they provide rotation-free, fast activation with the squeeze of a spring pin. For integrated storage the shaft slides into the metal blade, which is made of exceptionally strong aluminum and designed to move large quantities of snow quickly as well as for creating smooth pit walls. The Deploy 3 incorporates all the features of the Deploy 7 but with a smaller volume blade. The ergonomic handle feels like a D-grip but packs like a T-grip.

Berg's Ski Shop
The Deploy snow shovels achieve two important goals' maximum snow removal using the most efficient of blade size and shape and no-brainer fast deployment in emergency situations. A unique patent-pending trapezoidal bent shaft collapses into the 6000 series aluminum blade's pocket, allowing you to store the two components as one and deploy quickly with the squeeze of a spring pin. The stiff, trapezoidal shaft does not rotate, allowing immediate spring-pin engagement and its ergonomic handle feels like a D-grip but packs like a T-grip small but glove- and mitt-friendly in one elegant design. A smooth and flat shovel blade makes for easy pit analysis during your sheer test.
Mountain Gear
The Black Diamond Deploy Shovel is ready instantly, thanks to a unique, bent-shaft design that keeps the handle and blade nested together for packability.

I <3 this shovel.

I bought this shovel on sale to have in my car for emergencies, and boy, was it a great buy! So far, I have dug myself out of various snowbanks, chipped a friend's car out of it's icy crypt (blizzard deposits covered in plow slush & frozen overnight). I was EXTREMELY impressed after I dug through the mountain of doom (3+ feet of plow slush frozen overnight) in my driveway when my FULL SIZED shovel BROKE! The -only- time I wasn't able to use this shovel was when -my- car was frozen in a crypt of ice; alas, the little fellow can't teleport. :)

The one legit complaint I have is that the length of the handle makes it a little hard to use after about an hour of shoveling, and agonizing to use after about 2 hours. However, I imagine that it's one of the trade-offs necessary to make it so small & light.

I would recommend it without hesitation.

Light, Sturdy

The small size doesn't take up much room in the trunk or in a day-pack. The handle is simple to extend even in cold weather, or with gloves. The handle is easy and comfortable to grip even with mittens. The curve of the handle in relation to the head seems to make the throws so natural that it is easy to dig very quickly, while still pulling large amounts of snow. The material is sturdy enough to chop through packed snow or ice/snow mix, but very surprisingly light. The aesthetics are what one has come to expect from BD, clean and efficient lines, maintaining sturdy good looks.

We got high centered on packed snow in the backroads of central Maine this winter (2011), and only used this one shovel to dig behind the tires and beneath the Jeep. My friends and I were so impressed, I'm picking up another one for more snow adventures!

This shovel is light, compact, easy to use. It fits perfectly in my North Face ABS Vest. However, I ski with someone who is 6'4". Keep that in mind when you're buying this shovel. You're not buying this shovel to get yourself dug out, this is for the people you're skiing with. After realizing how small the shovel is, I decided go with another shovel/hoe combo. So think about when the snow falls and your partner only has a finite amount of time, would you rather have a smaller shovel or a bigger one? However, I absolutely will still use shovel for work and maybe some Yurt camping trips. Its nice for a traveling shovel, but I'd hesitate to dig my buddy out of the snow, since his life is in my hands.

The Black Diamond Deploy 3 is the perfect combination of portability and function. At 1lb 4oz it is not the lightest shovel you can buy, but it is definitely on the lower end of the spectrum. And when you slide that handle down to pack it away... it can fit in almost any bag I own.
I also like that when I take it out, I dont have to dig around for any handle pieces or anything, it's all there together and one click of the button and I am shoveling. You really cant beat that when the purpose of this product is to save lives.
My only issue is the short handle length, but for the portability and weight I am ok with that.

This shovel is exactly what it says it is, small and compact. If that is what your looking for tis is great it works well and stores awesome. If this is your first time buying a shovel keep in mind that bd built this for the bare minimum. I'm a patroller and have dug many holes I the snow. This shovel is not ideal for shoveling not so much because of the small blade but because of the short handle. This would for sure work in an emergency but if I was building kickers or snow camping I would consider your future back pain and go with the transfer shovel.

Just what I wanted

This is a great product and just what I wanted. It is perfect for keeping in the car and in a backpack. My only complaint is that it does not have any sort of insulating layer that might make it a little more comfortable to use without gloves (such as when I take it out of the car). Some other models are either plastic or have a foam handle and/or cover that comes in handy. But this one looks much cooler (no pun intended) and will last far longer than one with a plastic handle and longer than the foam will last on any other model anyway.

It definitely makes the cut.

I use this shovel regularly to plow through massive quantities of snow in the Sierra. The handle pops into my ice axe loops on both of my packs for extended travel. I have stopped bringing any sort of shelter with me knowing I can quickly build anything from an igloo to a snow grave. The construction seems pretty durable and the blade routinely gets abused breaking up ice, hard snow, and once even cutting downed tree limbs. Note - convince your buddies to buy one too so you aren't the only one doing the work.

Considering that I am mostly a day trip backcountry tourist, and I am a woman, with less strength in my arms than a man, this shovel is perfect. I don't think that in my case a bigger shovel would help me clear more snow faster, just a little bit of snow can be very heavy. The smaller size makes me want to put it in my 18L day pack. And like others have said before me, I hope I never need to use it, but if I do, it WILL be IN my pack.

mighty little shovel that works

My son had this shovel along when we were out in the mountains snowmobiling and sure glad he did because the snow collapsed and buried my sled in an unforseen creek bed. This shovel really impressed us on how easy it was to use in the high altitude digging out my sled that I just received my own today . If you are a skier, snowboarder, snowmobiler , or just want to have it with your survival gear , it won't disappoint you.

Light, compact, and super rugged. Fits in any pack which nice if you just want to use a day pack or are hitting up the sidecountry. Smaller size may be a plus or minus for you. Plus for me because of the fully connected design. Rather than worrying about putting the shovel together you can dig. Curved design seems to help with throwing snow but it also takes a little getting used to when packing. I recommend this shovel.

Negative Reviews:

Broken on First Use

I take this out for a trial run in the snow bank and one of the pins in the handle breaks. This shovel is a piece of junk. I will be returning it.
