Black Diamond's outside-the-box design makes their Deploy 7 Shovel extremely fast and idiot-proof for times when it matters most. It even earned the 2006 Couloir Design Innovations Award. The Deploy 7 Shovel's curved shaft collapses into the blade for a small package that fits easily into your touring pack, and it extends to lock into place with a quick pull. The shaft's trapezoidal shape ensures it doesn't rotate and come apart from the blade at the worst time. No more digging thorough your pack for separate pieces or dealing with frozen, over-complicated attachments.

Berg's Ski Shop
The new Deploy snow shovels achieve two important goals maximum snow removal using the most efficient of blade size and shape and no-brainer fast deployment in emergency situations. A unique patent-pending trapezoidal bent shaft collapses into the 6000 series aluminum blade's pocket, allowing you to store the two components as one and deploy quickly with the squeeze of a spring pin. The stiff, trapezoidal shaft does not rotate, allowing immediate spring-pin engagement and its ergonomic handle feels like a D-grip but packs like a T-grip, small but glove- and mitt-friendly in one elegant design. A smooth and flat shovel blade makes for easy pit analysis when doing a sheer test as well as easy digging. Makes great snow caves as well ;-)

Black Diamond Deploy 7 Shovel Reviews:

Reviews:

Got this shovel, was going to get the BD Deploy 3 shovel, but thought it would be too small. This fits in my Dakine Poacher Pack, with room to spare. I wanted this shovel because the handle really compacts. So I don't have to carry my handle on the outside, and having the chance of it getting ripped off. Also I don't even have to take the handle of which is important in those situations. Seems like a great shovel, which has great durability. And i'm sure it will last forever. If you want a great compact shovel that you can leave the handle on in almost any pack get this you'll love it.

Perfect for winter conditions

When our Search and Rescue Unit went on a winter survival training mission last year, I had no clue what to get, and it was pure luck that I happened on this shovel. Thank God I did, because it saved my rear. The shovel performed great in the snow, and I was able to dig a very comfortable cave in about three hours. The blade and handle are very sturdy, and the shaft is the perfect length; long enough to get good leverage, but short enough to be easily manuverable. Aside from the price, which I thought was a little steep, this is a perfect shovel.

this shovel deploys super quick. i think that's where they got the name from. but if you're actually trying to dig someone out, a fast, foolproof system could make the difference. simply depress the button that holds it in place (easy to do with gloves), pull back on the handle, and start digging. another button on the shaft locks it in the extended position.
only complaint is that the handle sticks out a couple inches from the blade which makes it harder to pack. not really a conplaint though cause i got the shovel to dig quick, not fit nicely in my bag.

i have this shovel

i have this shovel (but in red) and have never been able to use it. when i go winter camping or just snowshoeing, i always take it with me. my companions think it is such an awesome shovel that they take it away from me so they can use it. since i have had this shovel, i have never had to build a snow cave. everyone else in my group will do the snow cave because they want to use this shovel. best investment i have never been able to use.

well designed, well-built shovel

I bought the deploy 7 for winter backpacking, mountaineering, and ice climbing. So far I have used it on one 3-night winter backpacking trip. It is compact, lightweight, and feels well-built. And it is easy to strap to your bag or slide it inside. It does have a large head which makes it a bit bulky but that helps with shoveling. Once it is fully extended I found it to be very effective for shoveling.

Best lightweight shovel on the market

This shovel is well shaped and has a strong/sharp enough tip to dig through anything. It is great in the backcountry, because of its weight and versatility. You should definitely go out and by one! The natural curve allows itself to a better dig and although the length on the shovel it not as long as others, the power is noticeably better!

Excellent design for a Compact shovel. No reason to not carry one in your car due to its handle design. In fact, the first weekend that we had it was one where two feet of overnight wet snow got us stuck pulling out of the driveway. This was tested immediately and has a solid scoop that does not flex much.

David Page at Backcountry.com on 08/05/2012

Nice shovel. Light and folds up nice and small. I could fit it in my Bandit pack but it was tight. Probably not the best if you had to dig pits all day due to the short handle. Ended up with the Deploy 3 based on the type of terrain I normally skill and my tolerance for risk.

Quick and Easy

All you have to do is press the little button in and pull it open. It is quicker than other 2 piece shovels where the blade and handle are separate.

If you have a small or thin pack, like below 20L or 11 inches wide, you may want the smaller version, which is the deploy 3.

Black Diamond Deploy 7

First impression - bigger than I thought it would be (didnt see in store, first). Fits perfectly in Deuter 55 pack outside pocket, as if it were made for it (put in handle down). Construction is very solid. Metal button locks to extend and retract handle are a little difficult. Lighter than other shovels I looked at.
