Canada Goose Trillium Parka

I bought this coat a few days ago, after trying on 5 different styles of Canada Goose jackets, upon hearing that they were supposed to be one of warmest brands on the market, particularly for urban wearers.

Though I love the look of this coat, I regret buying this coat because the waist-band area, which is tightly banded the body for a more feminine fit, is not properly insulated. Whenever I wear it out, I can sense the cold in that area, which annoys me, since the rest of my body is warm.

I'd definitely recommend either the Solaris (the whole coat is cut with a feminine shape, instead of tapered banding around the waist) or Bomber styles of this brand, instead of the Trillium, unless you plan on using it as a fall coat, or wear sufficient clothing around your middle.

They claim to have 'field-tested' this coat for 'urban winters', and maybe so, except for Toronto ones. The winters here are obviously chilly, but equally damp. 2 degrees Celcius can often feel like -5 on a particularly damp day, even without windchill.

I plan on writing to Canada Goose to let them know my thoughts on their perceived designed flaw.

Some negatives and some positives:
2 Major problems:
1) The collar/hood design is terrible: it is not insulated at all and stands away from the neck. When zipped up all the way up, the hard flat corners hit your chin. There is no way to pull the hood/collar tightly around the neck. I added additional velcro to the hood tabs, but even so, without wearing a heavy gator the jacket is useless for any kind of cold, windy weather. With a gator over a turtleneck, its OK.
2) Read the label carefully: the LINING may be "100% down PROOF", BUT...the FILL is ONLY 60% down with 40% feathers. Not what I expected from Canada Goose! OK for NYC, but not if you are looking for really effective single digit weather insulation.
the Pros:
1) Wonderfully durable fabric. Much tougher than the thin nylon that the 'fashion' down coats are made of. Precipitation literally bounces off the shell, and, unlike canvas fabrics it also repels dirt.
2)The deep set knit windbreaker cuffs are very effective...I wish they had put the same thought into wind-proofing the neckline.

In summation: This jacket was bought for me as a gift last year. Its cut and lack of detail is not that of a fashion jacket...but in a way, thats good because it's boxier, unembellished 'snorkel' style is timeless. Like the company description says, the coat is fine (with the above qualifications for additional weather proofing)for mid-atlantic and Northeast urban winters, but for another $100.00, I would suggest buying the Canada Goose Expedition model.

Pros: 1)The fabric is not just water repellant, but almost waterproof. I wore it in a snowstorm and the snow literally bounced off.
2)Classic snorkel parka design that won't look dated in years to come. 3)excellent deep-set windbreaker cuff works well with any kind of glove. 4)inside waist drawstring is a nice feature.

Cons: 1) Filling is not 100% down (its 60/40) and it should be for this price. 2)The large plastic 2-way zipper trac is very difficult to allign. It takes a few tries to get the slider inserted properly. 3)The biggest problem is the poor engineering of the collar and hood. There is no down filling at all in the collar and the drawstring in the hood does nothing to hold the collar snugly against the neck (as have jackets I've had in the past)...a very important issue for a cold weather garment. Nor is the collar comfortable when zipped up all the way because it bumps against my chin. There should be some kind of sewn in windbreaker at the neckline like they have at the cuff.
This coat was not purchased for fashion but as a utilitarian cold weather garment. I would expect more from this maker at this price.
