I've waited for the right conditions to actually wear this jacket. They came, windy and cold rain. The jacket performed outstanding. I wear a long sleeve T-shirt under this jacket, I don't like the feel of 'plastic' on my arms, this works well. The look of the jacket I like. The size of the jacket runs large. This I don't mind for those times I like to keep a large sweater or small pack on. It does have adjustments on the side to take up the extra room when not needed. The adjustment is fast and easy both ways (done and undone) by simply pulling a cord and releasing it when finished. Wrist size adjusts with Velcro. No wind came through and no rain at all. I was worried about sweating inside of the jacket, but, as of yet this has not happened outside of what I would have while hiking. I remain (happily) surprised by that. I like the location, size and functionality of the pockets, all are a plus from me.
I'm 5' 10", 224 lbs. I wear a 2X comfortably, in this particular jacket if you don't wish the "extra room", order one size down and you will not have to worry about it being too snug. I like this jacket, it works well and stores in a tight ball in my pack or pocket. Cleaning is a snap, just rinse it off, stuff comes right off, not much sticks to it. I would absolutely recommend this to a friend with the only warning being that of the size.
I'm 5'6" and 145 lbs and bought the small size and the jacket was still extremely roomy for me. I could have easily worn a soft shell underneath it. I took it with me while travelling in North-Eastern India and to one of the wettest places in the world (Cherrapunji) and one of the most intense rainfalls I have ever experience and it kept me almost completely dry. I was a little damp on the inside possibly because rain seeped in due to the jackets looseness. All in all, this jacket well worth the price.
True to size, decent all around inexpensive rain jacket. Replaced an older jacket that lining was peeling up in. Kept me dry on a 5 mile hike on the Washington Coast. Could breath a bit better, but for a light cheap jacket works well.
it's a nice jacket, just size is too large, I usually wear M or L, but for this jacket, M is huge on me, I had to get a replacement to get a smaller size.
I rarely find something that fits comfortably that is a large. XL for me all the way. But this jacket, Large fits great. Haven't tested the waterproof ability yet however.
Well priced light weight waterproof shell. A bit oversized, which is typical of Columbia, so it permit adding a Seagate fleece or sweatshirt for added warmth. Definitely recommend.
As other reviewers have experienced, the Columbia runs larger than expected. If you have a 42 inch chest, order the medium. As far as function, the jacket holds up quite well in a light rain. Anything other than these brief light rain exposures and you will be getting wet. Perhaps I was asking too much of this jacket when exposed to one hour of steady rain, but then again maybe it shouldn't be called "watertight." "Water resistant" would be more accurate. Also, if you are doing aerobic activity, such as hiking in my case, expect poor ventilation. Overall, at this price point, I suppose my expectations were too high. If you're just looking for something to get you through brief sprinkles it will perform flawlessly.
I would not trust this jacket in the backwoods for multiple days. I bought it for city use and it looks good and works great for that purpose. Does an adequate job shedding light rain. I can tell the water-proofing is wearing down in just under a years worth of use. Overall, I am happy with it as an everyday jacket, but I bought a Torrentshell for the backcountry.
Overall, I liked the quality of the jacket, but it runs large. I'm 6'-3" and 190 lbs. and always wear Large, but this jacket was sized like an extra large.
They do run big and don't breathe, but its decent for a running errands type rain coat.
