The Keen Newport Sandals were developed in the sailing mecca of Rhode Island to solve these problems while retaining the comfort of sandals. Best sandals EVER!

Ive had a pair of keens and Im pretty sure its this model. My pair of keens have lasted EIGHT YEARS of Colorado living. Mountain hiking, camping, daily use, biking, rivers, oceans (yes I went to Mexico twice), lakes, boats, canoes. I took them to the Boundary Waters in MN and wore them MUCH more often than the mroe serious hiking boots I also brought with. I have never had an issue with them. These are, without question, the best paid of sandals I have EVER owned. Now that they are eight years old, the rear/heel strap is starting to stretch out a bit, but I just did a river trip in them and they still performed like the monsters I know they are. Mud up to you knee? Doesnt matter, these sandals arent coming off. :D Some people complain about them getting smelly, but I have NEVER, EVER smelled anything "funny". Maybe their feet stink and its rubbing off on the sandal? Lol. Anyway If I did have to say a bad thing about these sandals, Id have to say if you dont leave them in the sun to dry, they take a good 24 hours to dry out. BUY THESE SANDALS!!! Oh and the my sandals are still wet in the photo from the river I was in yesterday.

Just bought the same shoes again!

I just bought these shoes for the second time, 4 years later. They're simply awesome, I even considered trying a different kind of high end sandal, but just can't leave these shoes behind. I've traveled all over the world, Vietnam, India, Costa Rica, Austria, all over the US, I hike, climb, run, play in rivers, and jungles, and fly my paramotor wearing these shoes. I've had them since at least 2008, though I think maybe even earlier than that.

The sole is finally starting to detach from the foot bed, but the top still looks very serviceable. These are by far the best shoes I've ever had for the mileage I've put on them. They aren't great for going out on the town in, but anywhere where a sandal would be appropriate you'll find me in my Keens.

I've never worn another kind of Keens, but I can't recommend this style enough. If you do half the stuff I do, that's 8 years you might get out of them! They've definitely held up better than other high end sandals I've used. The protected toe is pure gold if you do any kind of trekking/travel in the outdoors.

Great shoe- for every day and travel

I bought my first pair of Keens 6 or so yrs ago. That pair had replaceable orthotics which were excellent in fit from the beginning. The second pair, Newport waterproof, had fixed footbed. It worked well with my orthotic and had the advantage of water resistance. I'm on my third pair now with complete satisfaction. I ordered my size based on my most comfortable shoes, ECCO. The initial fit feels tight. But, within a day the shoe adapted to my feet. I especially like the roomy and comfortable area at toes. I wear my Keens with and without socks with great comfort almost daily summer and winter. When I travel, I wear them for TSA checkins and on the plane (definitely comfortable on long flights, domestic and international). Then, when I have to, I switch to the "street" shoe. They wear well in street and "off trail" environments. They drain and dry well when wet. My wife also has 2 pairs (for street and travel) that that she thinks are great.

Tremendously versatile sandal

Keen sandals are fantastic if they fit your feet, and they fit mine very well. I assume the foot bed may not be right for everyone, but I have several pairs, including the Newports, and they are great for daily wear, light to moderate hiking, and in the water, eg., canoeing. I have just got back from canoeing in the Boundary Waters and hiking in the Sierra and wouldn't be without these sandals. For canoeing, they perform well in the water, dry fairly quickly, and have good traction. Because the leather is lined with thin neoprene, they actually have some insulating capacity. After several years of use on land and in water, mud, and muck, they still look good and perform very well. Just rinse them off. I've also tried Keen shoes, which look like they have the same foot bed, but they have never worked for me - not as comfortable as the sandals. But I can never have too many pairs of the sandals.

Great Product

These are great sandals. I had them for a couple of years and wear them regularly. "Tough as nails", as another reviewer put it, is accurate. Also the toe box is not constricting, which is great as that usually is the deal killer for me in other sandals. I usually slip these on for most Spring/Summer/Fall days without tightening up at all. If I need extra traction I pull on the elastic to tighten to give me good support. Quick and easy. And the traction they provide is very good. The leather is holding up great. With any closed toed sandal like this, pebbles and what not that get caught in the toe box do not shake out with a mere lazy foot shake. I usually have to take off the sandal to get them out. Absolutely love love love the toe bumper. That bumper has saved me toes on many occasion. If these ever wear out I'll go back for another pair.

Comfortable and very durable.

My first pair of these last me 10+ years. Before I owned these, I would go through a pair of sandals in one year (I wear sandals a lot and I wear them hard :)). The closed-in toe (toe box?) is feature that has saved my toes many many times where a typical sandal probably wouldn't have, however it can be a problem in very loose sand or very loose small gravel (> 0.25 inch) because these or any other debris is hard to shake out of the toe box and may even require you to remove the sandal to do that. Also since it is a sandal, it's probably not good in snow either (haven't tried that yet). I just bought anothr pair to replace the ones that I finally wore out (they looked pretty good right to the end), I just hope that they build these today as well as the ones that I bought 10+ years ago.

All Time Favorite Shoe

This is literally my favorite shoe of all time.

I choose this sandal over any of the other popular Chacos because it covers my toes... so I can wear this while bicycling.

I have been wearing this shoe literally every day there isn't snow on the ground for the last two years. They are starting to wear out on the bottom, and I've had to replace the laces, but other than that these shoes are SO durable.

I biked across America in these, have hiked up and down mountains, and the appalachian trail in them, and wore them every day for two semesters abroad in Guatemala. Absolutely no regret in these shoes.

When these wear out, I will definitely be buying a second pair. I'm curious to know how long the next pair will last!

Great shoes

I pick the Newport Keens over others because of the high rubber sole that rises around the edge of your foot. This keeps almost all dirt and debris out of your sandal. They aren't good on dry sand or scree slopes, but I do a lot of casual hiking at PA state parks with no problems at all. Plus, of course, they were designed to get wet.

I pick the leather variety so I can wear them to work--leather is a bit dressier than plastic, right?

The only weakness in these shoes is that the little pulls on the back strap and tongue can pull out. This happened on one of my old pairs and on this pair I just purchased. I had a shoe repair guy fix it for $5.

I believe this is my third pair of the Keen Newports. I originally purchased them for backpacking and outdoor water use, and have converted them to everyday wear instead. They are comfortable, roomy and breathe well. They aren't the best in water or outside as small stones can easily get stuck up in the toe area, and they are hard to get out without taking them off. They made great travel shoes a few years back when we took them to Europe. They don't wear out very quickly, but it depends what you use them for. I get 3-4 years out of each pair. The foot bed gets more comfortable as they age. I'm glad they still make the leather version, and as long as they do, I will likely keep buying them.

My 4th pair, and not my last

These are my fourth pair and not my last, need I say more.

I live in these shoes and they never let me down. They replaced my hiking boots, replaced my fancy sneakers, and replaced my comfortable Crocs. Great on concrete, have grip on wet surfaces, smooth out the rocks, never break. I literally wear the soles down, decide they are looking a bit to scruffy, and get a new pair.

The only down I have found is that they are not good in loose sand. Where a Croc or flip flop (we call them slippahs here) will shake out the sand, these will not. My feet look like they have tiger stripes from the sun; this might be a negative for some.

Negative Reviews:

The Newport sandle is made very well. I had bought cheaper brands and thought one day I would go ahead and buy the expensive ones. I am now returning the sandles because I could not find a size to fit comfortably. The problem is the insole part where your toes go. There is a ridge that is supposed to fit between the toes and the pad of your foot. I could not get a size that would fit that had the ridge in the right place. Maybe it's just me. I am trying a pair of the Keen water shoes that do not have the ridge, and they seem to fit better.

Disappointed

This is my third pair of Keen Newport Sandals. I purchased the first pair several years ago. They were great and I wore them out. I recently purchased a new pair and found the heel padding to be uneven. The padding in one shoe was thicker than the other. I exchanged these and received another pair. Again, the heel padding was uneven. Though, this time the outter edge of the sole was higher than the inside, causing my feet to rotate inward.
Phaolo at REI on 06/06/2012

Big toe callus with these!

The big toe area has a rim around it and it has caused a hard callous to build up on my big toes. Also, my little toes get red on the top with these, although the footbed looks very nice and wide...So I have hardly worn these and plan to sell them. They are a quality, well made shoe but just don't work for my feet. Darn!

After about 6 months, dye from the sandals leached onto my skin and toenails.

What happened to my sandal?

This sandal now fits more like a shoe. This is my third pair. I like this sandal. The only con before was that the toe could gather dirt- only an annoyance. The elastic pulls that before were so long that you feared stepping on them, but never quite did, that once allowed adjustment to terrain or feet swelling, are now so short as to preclude adjustment. I just set them at maximum loose beceause the inner sandal (under the fingers) is already too tight. Still a cool alternative to shoes, but no longer comfortable, like a sandal. It also now has a heel, like a shoe.
Old Bobby at REI on 06/06/2012

This is my second pair of Keen Newport sandals. When I first received them, they felt extremely small and narrow even though I ordered the same size as my other pair. I sent them back to get a 1/2 size larger pair which fit much better. However, these Newport's feel much stiffer and less comfortable than my first pair which felt great from day one. I'm a little disappointed with these. Hopefully they will get more comfortable with wear.
