These were my first Zappos purchase and it was a good experience. The shoes were on sale and I ordered three pairs to try on. There was no fuss on returning the other two and the return was processed quickly. I bought these to have good quality walking shoes that were not sneakers. I needed something to handle more casual days at work, some outdoor activity, and travel. These fit the bill. I am flat footed and arch support has not been a problem. There was a little bit of break in time and they are not the most flexible pair of shoes that I have had, but there were no problems getting them on or off. When I first got them they felt too small and my feet would ache after a day. It turned out that the lacing was just too tight out of the box. Once I did a big loosing of the laces the problem went away. They are holding up great for work and outdoors. I just did a last minute cabin trip with some light hiking. For personal travel I am hoping these can be the only shoes that I need to take, as long as I do not need to get dressed up.
Great dress/casual work shoe
These shoes are GREAT!!! But, I had to size down 1/2 size. I first tried an 8 and they felt huge, so I dropped back to a 7.5 and they fit perfectly. Also, the Austin is a bit wider in the toe box than other Keen shoes (lace up's styles), which for some may be great. I have a narrow foot, but the extra width in the toe box doesn't bother me, in fact, I like the extra room because my toes don't feel cramped. I pair these shoes with Smartwool PHD midweight hikers and I'm set for a day at work or just wandering around town & up to the mountains. The outsoles also have a good tread design for wear in pretty much any type weather. They are also soft enough to wear while standing all day or being on your feet for a good part of it.
They are also nice enough to dress up for a night out or just to clean up an outfit with a pair of jeans. Being from Keen, you can't go wrong, they use top quality materials and every pair has been very comfortable!
Really comfortable shoe.
I had been looking for a pair of Keene shoes dressy enough for work for a while and found these on sale online at REI Outlet. I have two other pairs of Keenes (Arroyo II sandals and Targhee Mid hiking boots)and they are the most comfortable shoes that I own. Keene really has figured out the foot beds. Their shoes don't require the heel cushion/arch support that I have to add to other shoes.
The shoes run wider at the front (which I don't mind)and provide good arch support. They have a good tread and were comfortable out of the box and broken in after the first two times I wore them. They look good with jeans and khakis. If you wear them with wool blend socks, you never have foot odor problems.
I have had issues with the rubber soles of my Keene sandals delaminating, (nothing copious of glue couldn't fix), but haven't had any issues with this pair so far. The nubuck leather attracts scuffs, but seems to brush out OK.
Happy I got them, but I was already a bid fan of Keene.

Comfortable but premature wear
I purchased these shoes for a cruise/tour in Europe that required a fair amount of walking. I am happy with the comfort level of the shoes, and they served me well on the trip. However, I have noticed a small amount of wear on the piping of the upper portion of the shoe that should not have surfaced this early. It's not that I "wore them out" or had on socks that would create excessive amounts of friction. It seems that it is either a design issue, or (more likely) a defect in the manufacture. The soles held up very well and hardly show wear. I am thinking of taking them back to the store, but I do not live real close to the REI store, so I'm not sure if I'll get around to doing that. Despite this issue, I like the shoes and would buy they again. Therefore, I do recommend them.

There is something wrong with me. I've never been into clothes or shoes. I usually bought my shoes at JL Coombs in Freeport from the discount rack. Blemished, seconds, whatever. Had a great pair of LL Bean shoes that I resoled and re-soled for a decade. Then my fiancee suggested I get a pair of these hideous looking "Keens". I bought the Austins, black, size 10.5 One year later: I own 5 pairs...I'm turning into the Imelda Marcos of Keens, and I'm a straight guy. I just ordered another pair of sandals, and when the soles started showing wear on my original Austins and they couldn't re-sole them, Keen said I could get another pair. I've never worn anything on my feet so comfortable. I wake up in the morning and I can't wait to put on a pair. How is that for an endorsement?
Happy Feet!
I was having a hard time finding shoes that would fit size 12 feet and have a roomy toe box. For me, many brands I tried in 12s cramped my right big toe and the toe box tapered in too much to be able to call them comfortable. REI staff directed me to Keen and Merrell--both had some good options with wider toe boxes. I picked Keen Austin for light weight and excellent comfort for an upcoming Europe trip--but I'm already wearing them everyday to work. I'm not going back to the standard, narrow toe boxes. I applied waterproof "wax" for extra protection against stains and rain.

I absolutely love my Austins! They are the best shoes that I have ever worn. They were a little tight out of the box but I just had to loosen the laces a bit. After that they were perfect! These are very comfortable and are built to last. I have worn them everyday for nine months now and they are still in great condition. My last pair of Sketchers fell apart and had no sole left after just two months. My next pair of shoes will definitely be Keen! Now I just have to work on converting my family and friends to be Keen fans!
Awesome shoes for those of us with wide feet. The boxy toe is really comfortable for walking. I wear these almost every day, and they look almost brand new after 6 months. I can also wear them with jeans, khakis, whatever. I'm currently on my third pair of Austins. I'm really hard on shoes, and they usually last me about a year. That kind of durability is unheard of with other shoes I've worn. On the bad side, they're not substantial enough to wear much in the winter, and are particularly ill-suited for snowy walks.
Surprsingly comfortable
I have wide feet and also need a big toe box. The helpful salesguy at my local REI suggested these when I told him that I needed something to wear when doing a lot of walking in urban and rural areas in Scotland. They are not the most attractive shoes you'll ever see (and a really odd color), but they were surprisingly comfortable (perhaps more than any other "city" shoe I've owned) and so far have held up well. I can absolutely recommend them to anyone with feet like mine.

Hubby loves!
I purchased for my husband. He wasn't crazy about the Keen style of upper at first but now he loves them because they are great for his feet - he has foot problems. They do run a size small. I took the advice from the REI rep & ordered up and he was correct. The gargoyle grey is a greenish grey not like the nice slate grey in photo on web. My husband didn't mind. He's happy with his shoes.
