Merrell Moab Ventilator Reviews:

Reviews:

I have taken several day hikes of varying lengths in this shoe now, and I have to say it is a great shoe. It feels light on the foot, but provides good support and enough motion control to stabilize my tendency to overpronate. The standard Merrell insoles included are fine for general hiking. I usually put Superfeet Green in my other Merrell mid-height boots for serious backpacking. I have tried the Superfeet Green in these shoes and they fit fine without making the shoe too tight. There is a slight tendency for the tongue gussets to roll and create a pressure point after several hours, but this can be avoided by spreading out the tongue gussets as you are tying the shoe. The sole is light but relatively firm, and gives great traction on every surface I have encountered including rock, dirt, light mud, and loose scree/gravel. The shoe breathes well. If you are looking for a lightweight non-waterproof, supportive hiking shoes, I highly recommend the Moab Ventilator.

I used these extensively over the past summer and fall. The description suggests these are great for hiking a sun drenched canyon or hitting some red rock on a mountain bike... and they are. However, unlike other hiking shoes out there, these are not what I'd consider a good "all around" hiking shoe. My last pair of hiking shoes could go anywhere, do anything, and left my feet feeling like a million bucks. The Ventilators excel at ventilation (not surprisingly) but I would only give them a 5 out of 10 for comfort. This shoe is fine on an ascent, but these shoes always seem to leave my feet yearning for more underfoot support and shock absorption on the way down. The advertised air-cushion midsole is just not an adequate shock absorber for this level of shoe, even on gradual declines. I have already decided to retire them from hiking service, and use them for my casual wear shoe instead.

I'm on my third pair of these shoes - two low tops and one high top. As the name implies, they have exceptional ventilation. On trails with fine dust, it works through to my feet. Other than that, they're great for everyday wear, hiking with lighter packs, scrambling (good traction), hot weather due to the ventilation or wet weather due to the fast drying (I prefer a Goretex sock to the built in Goretex lining that is too hot when not getting wet). I've worn them on week long trips with a light pack and one pair of Smartwool socks and finished very happy with their performance. I'm going to buy some ultralight gaiters to see if they help protect the shoe on scree slopes and morning dew on the grass.

I like these shoes! I wore them up and down San Gorgonio as a 1 day (16 miles) last Summer with almost zero break-in and had no issues. They are a good lightweight summer hiker. They breathe very well (non-Gore-tex) I would agree the sizing is true. I would not wear these on any further distance or with more than a daypack as they are lightweight with a lot of feel so your feet bottoms would get pounded. I still use the original Merrell insoles.
These shoes also double for me as indoor workout trainers and they have massive grip on regular floor surfaces.

I have used these as my go-to hiking footwear for years, and love them for day hikes and overnight trips
They are light, have good tread (Vibram), stay tied well, shed moisture pretty well, and don't hold odor too badly; when going on longer multi-day trips, however, I usually opt for something with more ankle support
My only gripe is that the sole started to peel off the toe almost immediately, but it hasn't progressed in the years since then and they continue to perform well

A Classic

This shoe is a jack of all trades. I have used it for hiking, biking, golf and to just wear everyday. It is much more supportive than a pair of sneakers. It is not a backpacking shoe though. With a pair of superfeet premium insoles and treking poles I have put miles and miles on mine. I have been to deep valleys and mountain tops in mine. They fit a wide variety of foot shapes and take no breakin time.

Just ordered my 3rd pair of these shoes. I use them for everything. Mountain Biking in Moab. Approach shoes for rock climbing in Yosemite. Day Hiking. Trekking. They have survived 30+ days in the Himalayas as my only shoes besides flip flops. I hiked through snow, getting over 19,000 feet. With a pack, I didn't get a blister or have any problems. Walked through some rivers, they dried out by the next morning. Love 'em!

Great shoe for the price. My feet stay cool and comfy all day long on 10+ mile hikes with some climbing involved. I've had the shoes for about two years now and the soles are still looking good with plenty of grip. Now I don't use them everyday but they are holding up great for how old they are. Styling not the best but hey its a hiking shoe and its not all about looks.

These shoes were just what I needed to replace my aged North Face shoes. They're holding up great so far under the mild daily abuse I give them wandering the office. But they also do a fantastic job of supporting my feet when I'm at the gym 3-5 days throughout the week. Very comfortable to walk or run in and definitely feel light, and still provide plenty of arch support.

Have had a pair of these for several months, and noticed recently that an uneven level in the padding was developing in the heel of one of the shoes. I guess I could have covered it with a stiff-heeled insole, but I contacted Merrell, and they cheerfully accepted my shoes and agreed to send me a new pair. Thanks for the great customer service- I remain a loyal customer.
