LIke 'em a lot!

In preparation for fairly light (3-5 miles per day total on trails and boardwalks) hiking in the Tetons and Yellowstone, I tried on many different brands and styles in the REI store and elsewhere, and finally settled on these Merrells at almost the last minute. I wore them on asphalt roadway in my hilly Maryland neighborhood for a few days and found them very comfortable with one exception: On my right foot, I have a Morton neuroma (for you who are free of foot issues, this is a tiny cluster of irritable nerves on the foot, behind the smaller toes), and it acted up almost immediately. This sometimes happens when the footbed of the shoe is a little stiff, as is the case with these shoes. I solved this quickly by inserting a drugstore-brand adhesive-backed 1/4"-thick ball of foot cushion in BOTH shoes. Everything worked out great! I also wore light-cushion hiking socks, which did fine. We had only dry weather, so I can't tell you how these would perform in wet conditions. I like Merrell's professed attention to balancing the shoes to prevent over- or under-pronation in women, taking stress off the knees. Having had three knee surgeries, two on one and one on the other knee, I am always grateful for anything that helps stabilize me and reduce impact. Very happy with these! I was also thrilled to find that they came in 10.5, which fit beautifully. I wear a 10M in a dress shoe and often have to buy an 11 in an athletic shoe.

Good with one caveat

I have the Merrell Kinetic Mid-Hiking boot but wanted something lower for less intensive hikes (i.e. short hikes on flattish terrain). I tried on the 10 and 10 & 1/2 instore, but went with the 10, as that is the size of my Kinetics. They felt great at first, nice and roomy in the toe box.
My problem was my first hike in them, which involved quite a bit of downhill. I found that my right big toe jammed up against the toebox. While it wasn't really painful, I don't like the sensation of being aware of my feet in my shoes when I hike. I contemplated returning them to REI but I thought that if I went up a size, my foot would simply slide forward and still hit the toebox. I have very wide feet, so I can't complain about a roomy toebox (I tried on the much narrower Merrell Avian and couldn't even fit my foot into a size 11!).
All in all a pretty good shoe though. No shoe is perfect, I guess.

Beat the Keens

I got these to replace my multi-purpose shoe that I had. The Vibrum soles do not wear out and they still look almost new after 3 years of use. I have found that these shoes will give me blisters in weird places inbetween my toes after wearing them to do long hikes many days in a row. I bought some canvas Keens for walking but in the end if I know that I will be gone for an hour or more, I put on my Merrells. they do well for large day hikes but like I said, not many days in a row. While wearing them biking, you can actually feel the air blowing through the shoe on your foot. That's great. But if water does touch the mesh part, you will be wet very shortly.

This shoe is extremely comfortable and well padded on the inside. It doesn't need to be broken in. I has a wider fit, which was perfect for me. I've had it for a full summer now, and it's held up great so far, and I do use it for everything. For light hikes, mountain bike rides, light climbing and longer (up to 15 miles) hikes, it works well in any conditions, mud and snow included, and has great traction. It's also very breathable. I was afraid the padding would make it too warm in hot weather, but they have stayed very breathy and comfortable in both 90 degree Moab weather or 20 degree Crested Butte weather. They also dry fairly fast, which is key in our ever-changing Colorado weather. Great all around shoe.

Comfy shoes with serious soles

As soon as I put these on in the store, my feet said YES to the roomy toe-box and generous padding. I have worn them during the last year for summer mountain day hikes (max 12 miles) and around town in spring and fall. They have covered many miles with no complaints from my feet and no significant wear. As the name implies, they keep my feet cooler than hiking boots. The Vibram soles provide excellent traction. I replaced the laces with Yankz, which make shoes easy to put on without treading down the backs, and Yankz also add a little give, which I like. The shoes are dirt-colored, a big plus in my opinion. Highly recommended for day hiking and general purpose use.

Great Shoes!

I love this shoe! What was great was I walked across a stream and was completely submerged, wearing wool socks, and everything dried/drained in about 20-30 minutes without me taking off my shoes. I also discovered that the shoes are very easy to clean. You get some mud on it and it washes off very easily. Runs a bit big, I got a 7.5 but probably should have gotten a 7, even with socks. But, my foot does not move too much when going downhill, and I would rather have a little wiggle room when walking. Shoes are also lightweight. In terms of support, I walked 10 miles in one day with them, and I felt like I only walked 1. Fantastic!

I bought these shoes, in the smoke color, in a local store last year. I have medium width feet with narrow heels. I had been looking for low top hiking boots off and on for a couple of years. These were the only ones I found that fit my heels well. There was no slipping. After I injured my foot in December, these were the only shoes I owned that my doctor would let me wear. I ordered a second pair from Zappos because I wanted a darker pair. My two pair of Moab Ventilator shoes were the only shoes that I wore for two months. There was no break-in period and they are very comfortable.

Best desert shoes

These weigh so little it's like you have nothing on your feet. They're also cool -- I wear them to hike in the High Desert. Their performance on rock is just fine, and they look nice (no weird neon colors). The only place I wouldn't wear these is heavy-duty talus, carrying a heavy pack, or in the wet. They do tend to fit 1/2 size small, so order accordingly. Mine are starting to wear a bit inside at the heel -- there's a metal shank or something that's starting to bend and poke me -- but I have had them for several years and covered many miles.

Great Shoe for the price!!!!

I did the SGK 3-DAY last year & this year in Chung Shi shoes because I need foot stability. Unfortunately, those shoes were not holding up well - tread was shot after 200-400 miles, so I was looking for a similar shoe with more durability and hopefully a better price. I found these shoes in the REI in Atlanta. So far so good. I wear them all the time & on training walks (5-10 miles paved trail). Although they do not have the rocker bottom like the Chung Shi's, they seem to be working out well & for a MUCH better price.

this is my second pair of moab venitlator hiking shoes.they are true to size, and the support is terrific
they hold up under all sorts of conditions - terrain and weather!
and THEY ARE SO COMFORTABLE
i don't feel the jagged rocks under my feet but i have the grip i need!
i wear them all the time whether i am hiking on the trails or treking around the mall on all those concrete floors. they are just fabulous.
they are a great investment as they hold up well - i am tough on my shoes!
and thanks to Backcountry for the great price on them!

GREAT SHOE!

I did alot of research for an around town long/ walks/hikes type of shoe. I have a high top hiking boot for longer or mountain hikes but I wanted something to wear on my frequent 4-5 mile hikes around the local area that had good support. I tried on a lot of shoes and this one fit the best. I wear a size 6.5 and bought this shoe in a 6.5 and it fits perfectly (I wear lighter weight socks). Comfortable right out of the box. Very ventilated, I can almost feel a cool breeze on my feet. The only thing I don't like about the shoe is that it's not waterproof. But then if it was waterproof, it wouldn't be ventilated. I would definitely buy these shoes again and would recommend the to a friend.

hurt my feet

I bought these after my favorite Merrel Chameleons wore out. I was hoping for the same comfort. This shoe did not deliver, it has a strange arch that left my feet aching all day. I wore them for a week hoping I just needed to break them in, but the pain continued. I'm returning them tomorrow!

Very good, but anything but ventilates!

I own two pairs of Merrell shoes. My feet gets hot and uncomfortable in both pairs. I dread wearing them and may return one pair. They just don't breath. I don't have this problem with other brands of similar styles. Love their designs and styling but I don't think I'm going to buy any more Merrells.
Cisco7 at REI on 04/04/2008

Nice shoe but much too wide even with hiking socks. Had to return them. Manufacturers should remember some people have narrow feet!

Good with one caveat

Overall, I loved this Merrill Moab shoe. They are attractive to me - like someone else mentioned, they are not flourescent-colored and do not have the fancy designs I dislike.
This summer I walked a 500-mile trail in Spain, about 1/3 of it in these Moabs. Daily walking did not wear them out, or even scruff the tread, they are extremely durable. I bought the shoes larger than my normal size, since I knew my feet would swell on such a long trail; yet they did seem a bit smaller than another pair I had of the same size.
But those metal heel stiffeners eventually gave me blisters. Over the course of about six days of daily walking 12 - 20 miles a day, I developed blisters on my inside heels at the exact spot of the stiff insets. The Spanish foot doctor I had to visit pointed this out to me.
I stopped wearing them for much of the rest of that trail (another month or so) and in fact never wore them on consecutive days. It was disappointing, because I did like a lot about them.
I now wear them on day treks only. I still like them, but wanted to warn hikers about that day in day out use and the effect of the stiff heel inset.

Comfortable but not quite right

I needed a pair of shoes for lightweight backpacking and hiking. These were the most comfortable pair I tried on in my REI store. However, I found that no matter how tightly I tied the laces, my toes slid forward when going down inclines, pushing my big toe into the front of the shoe. I did not go down a very long incline, so this did not hurt my feet, but it made me nervous for future hikes (I went 1/2 size up and had the same issue). I think the problem with these shoes for me was that the upper is so cushy and soft that your feet don't really feel secure inside them. If you kind of kick your foot forward along the ground, your foot slips forward to the front of the shoe (my husband got a pair and had the same problem). I ended up getting a pair of Patagonia Drifters A/C which have slightly stiffer uppers and hold the foot more securely inside the shoe (they also have a bigger toe box and feel more sturdy overall with no increase in weight). I recommend that people try the Merrells, though- they are incredibly comfortable if you don't have the toe-jam problem.
Namy Cougar at REI on 07/07/2011

comfy but slippery

I bought these for walking around during the hot summers, and so far, they are cooler than other similar types of shoes. They are very comfy, with a large toe-box. I use them for walks around the neighborhood, bicycling, and going to the gym, and recommend them for those uses.

I do not recommend them for trails that are wet or rocky, though. I wore these on a coffee farm in South America, during some light showers, and the trails we walked on were rocky and wet. These shoes did slip, particularly on the uphill, enough so that I wish I had worn my Vasques instead.

The only other oddity is that the shoelaces come undone frequently, no matter how tightly I tie them. I'm going to fit them with a pair of Yankz, as I'm tired of trying to use sailor knots to keep them tied.

Great Shoes But Be Careful with the Size

I did not need new shoes, but I was visiting Seattle when an ingrown toenail problem (had previously had surgery on it) forced me to search for more comfortable shoes to enable me to walk the next few days. Specifically, I needed a pair with a toe box large enough to take pressure off a painful big toe. The Merrell Moab ventilator hiking shoes brought immediate blissful relief. My only complaint is that, after leaving the store, they felt a little short even though I bought a size 7 instead of my usual 6 1/2. I have worn them since I returned home to the AZ desert (they are great trail shoes) and have made adjustments with the laces and with somewhat thicker socks for padding. Overall, I wish I had bought a 7 1/2, a size I have never worn before.

Did the job

When I was shopping for shoes at REI, another customer was gushing about these shoes. I've always bought Merrill's and needed a new pair. These shoes are overall larger in size than my previous pair but I've gotten used to that. My only complaint is that when I came down Camelback recently, my toes were slamming against the front of the shoes and it was rather painful at the end of the descent. I was wearing wool socks -- perhaps I have the wrong size(?)but REI person thought this was right amount of space between toe tip and front of shoe and it is the size that I usually wear.

Hiking shoes to enjoy

I needed a short top hiking shoes, I have high tops and found that this was the best product available to me from REI, just not the size I needed. Most stores carry 6 & above in women's. I need a 5.5 in wide width. Hiking long hikes I needed a lighter weight for warmer weather, but needed the stability of rough terrain and traction. Thank you.
GrandmaFaye at REI on 06/06/2012

Not the same shoe

This is my second pair and it seems they have changed the vendor they were using. There is a difference in the width and the length. The construction is not as durable. I will be taking them back after the holidays. I have seen this happen before - if you like them the first time around buy two pair as my husband always says.
