Great for EVERYTHING!

I love these sandals.

Bought them right before a road trip to Arizona and Utah, where I knew a lot of hiking (and water hiking through the Narrows in Zion!) would be done. I barely took these off. They were perfect for everything--walking, hiking, jogging, all of the above through water (nothing like the scare of a potential flash flood to get you jogging through the narrows..). I wore them with and without socks.

These are SO COMFORTABLE! Now, I'm usually an 8.5-9 (more of a 9), but I made the mistake of going a half size above my true size because when I tried on the 9, it felt like my heel was hanging off the back of the shoe. There was still plenty of room in the toes, which I knew I needed, but the hanging heel just left me unsettled. I brought this up to the person working the shoe department and he assured me that it was supposed to be like that, and over time my foot would mold the sole to a better fit. I ended up buying the 9...and then after walking around a bit in them at home, I still felt uncomfortable with my heel hanging.

I brought them back the next day to exchange to a 9.5, which felt like a better fit...but after 4 days of walking and hiking in AZ and UT, I realized I probably should have listened to the guy and stuck with the 9. Toe space-wise, I had plenty of room for the downhill hikes. But I realized that while hiking up, my heels were hanging off the back edge anyway...and instead of them hanging off of a size 9, they were hanging off a size 9.5...which made the toe space seem SO much longer, and sort of like I was wearing clown shoes. I was afraid I'd trip over the extra shoe length.

To me, that was the biggest drawback. But I don't hold that against Keen. They made a great shoe, and the REI worker gave me his two cents, but I remained hard-headed, and that's my fault. Regardless, I still love the shoe, and I recommend it to all of my friends who are considering getting walking/hiking sandals.

Comfortable

I"m very particular about my footwear, and so are my feet. I don't chase after style, but comfort and support rule my shoe choices. 90% of the time I wear high stability running shoes. They're not only good for my feet, but my knees like the choice and unhappy knees make for an unhappy me.

I wanted some sandals for riding my bike on wet, sloppy, rainy days. I ended up not liking "bike shoes" and did not want to ride clipped in any more. My running shoes do fine for me on dry days, but once they get wet it takes a long time for them to dry out. Not too bad when it's hot, but not my preference even then. When it's cool/cold that gets really uncomfortable.

I had tried a different model of the Keen sandals and returned them before they ever left the house. They just weren't comfortable enough for my hard to please feet. When I saw these in the store I really wasn't expecting anything different, but tried them on just for spite -- and I was really surprised to find that they were very comfortable. I was still skeptical that I'd be happy with them, but I had to give it a try and so far I have not been disappointed. I've used them with and without socks in various late summer-through fall weather and have had no problems. I think the longest I've ridden the bike with them was around 40 miles. If they weren't bothering me by then I don't expect that they will.

It was nice to have an open style on the hot days, and no fear of them getting wet on the rainy days.

I've walked around in them on relatively short errands - shopping mostly - and they still seem very comfortable to me. As previously mentioned, my knees have issues with bad shoes, but from the lack of knee pain or discomfort I have to conclude that these provide good cushioning and support.

Fits narrow feet but dries slowly

I only put "feels too narrow" because it fits my feet - hooray! I wear an 8.5 AA usually, and have both narrow (side-to-side) and thin (top to bottom) feet. I got the 8.5 and it fits quite well. I was delighted to find some Keens that run narrower, because I feel like you could fit 2 of my feet in all of their other models that I have tried to-date! This style is much narrower than others.

Pluses of this shoe are that it protects your toes from stubbing on rocks, logs, etc.; it has a fair amount of space between straps so if you get a rock in the shoe, you can shake it out the side fairly easily; it is fairly secure on the feet, although my feet had a little bit of side-to-side "slop" (in part because of the narrowness of my feet); and it is softer than other all-webbing water shoes.

I have used these for casual athletic use and walks by / in the river, the primary drawback I have found so far is that they dry very slowly for me. I used them in the river one day while camping and they took nearly 24 hours to dry in 80-90 degree weather (off my feet) and part of that time was in direct sun. I try not to wear wet shoes because they chafe my feet worse than when dry (this is the reason I abandoned my last pair of Chacos), so I was out these shoes for most of a day when I would have liked to be wearing secure-sandals instead of less supportive flip-flops. I may see if they dry faster when worn than off the feet.

Great travel sandal

I was planning a trip to Costa Rica...weather wise it would be in the 90s with high high humidity and rain. I thought my current hiking shoes wouldn't be such a great idea. So I was looking at these shoes figuring it would be breathable and still able to withstand water and rainforest hiking. On my trip, my backpack never arrived to the airport, but luckily I wore these sandals on the plane and throughout my whole trip in Costa Rica.

They are great for hiking in wet weather. They were great for the natural hot springs and getting completely drenched. They were comfortable for walking around the city. Great all around hiking sandal.

My complaints, sort of vain of me to say, but they're not the prettiest and flattering of shoes. I'm not a big fan of the looks. Also I agree with other people's reviews of how rocks get in them and get annoying. They are not good for the beach or where small pebbles can get caught inside. Also they are pretty slow to dry. I got them completely wet at the hot springs and the next day they were still damp.

But other than the minor complaints I felt really lucky to have those shoes with me on the trip.

Perfect for a week in Powell

I needed a water shoe for a week-long trip to Lake Powell involving hiking, rock scrambling, and water. I debated buying these for the longest time because I think they are the ugliest shoes I have ever seen and I had a hard time justifying [$] for ugly shoes. Low and behold, these things are awesome. They were comfy even after zero break-in and they were the only shoes I wore the entire week. I like them because they protect my toes, which was a requirement. They also dry out and wash off easily, and are super lightweight. They were comfortable and durable and the perfect shoes for this trip.Cons: It is hard to remove rocks that get inside the shoe, although that can also happen with Tevas and other water shoes. Also, I almost got an 8.5 (I wear a 9) because of other reviews saying they fit a half-size smaller, but I got the 9s and they fit me beautifully...when I'm standing still. When walking, the shoe somehow manages to push my foot back so that it feels as if my heel is falling out. It seems like buying an 8.5 would have made this situation worse, not better. Still, I found them okay, despite this oddity. Oh, and did I mention that they are ugly?

Great sandals!

I have worn these everywhere from Indian Garden (Grand Canyon) to work (State government offices) and I love them. I get lots of compliments. They are extremely comfortable, very versatile and look terrific. After my GC trip I hosed them off in the shower and they looked good as new. I've had them for nearly a year and they look just as nice as when I got them. I can wear them with or without socks, though I prefer socks as, alas, they do acquire the famous 'Keen stink'. But, all things considered, not terribly problematic, you just have to remember to give them a good scrub and leave a few hours for them to dry before the next wear. What I love most about them is they are so functional without, well, being a man's sandal. Being, ahem, of a certain age, I wore mens' sandals for years because I loved how they wore, but UGH they were ugly! This was back in the day when most outdoor products were made for men. I am so pleased that there are now so many great, functional, well-made athletic/outdoors products for women, (and particularly with Keen products, with so many great colors and styles). It hasn't always been so!

Great shoe, no complaints

This is my first pair of Keen's and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I just got back from a 5 day camping trip to SEKI NP where hiking was the main event. I stupidly forgot my hiking boots and only had these new and unworn keen's and a pair of campsite flip flips. We had several 10+ mile days planned!

Luckily for me, these shoes really performed great in situations where I should have been in boots. I forded rivers, hiked in rain and even hail in these puppies, made it above 9,200 ft at Mineral King with snow still on the ground, and even ran between wooded areas to avoid an afternoon lightening storm, all in my Keen Whispers. It wasn't something I would have planned for my Keen's maiden voyage, but I wasn't about to let my absent-mindedness ruin my trip.

All in all, highly recommended. I couldn't have done all that in my old North Face water shoes, my feet would have been worn to the bone. I'm glad to find that Keen lives up to their rep.

Great for my narrow feet

I really wanted to get the Keen Venice shoes because I like their colors and design so much better. Venice also has a nicer foot bed. But, it wasn't meant to be with my narrow feet.

The salesperson told me these shoes run half a size small (true).

I was looking for traveling shoes in hot and humid monsoon season. These are great. I have to disagree with other reviewers who say these shoes work on the beach. I took them to the park and sand and bark chips kept going into my shoes and not being able to come out. I kept having to take them off.

In all, these shoes are very comfortable and I wear them almost daily around town. I love that it's light (lighter than Venice and Newport) and airy and so easy to slip on/off. And best of all, my toes are protected.

i hike, canoe, kayak the northwoods...and i wear the whisper from early spring thru the fall all the time for everthing. i like that they are lightweight and move with my feet unlike the newports. i have an old break in my big toe and can't wear most shoes but these have a roomy toe box but still fit tight around the rest of the foot to not rub loose while hiking. they cover enough of my feet to handle all sorts of hiking terrain, great grip for jumping creek boulders, and lots of open space for draining while walking in water. plus they dry quickly. last year's pair i wore thru the whole time and they are still sturdy but now a little loose, great for wearing with socks. just ordered my third pair just so i've got a grubby pair, a clean pair and a pair with warm socks.

Love these sandals!

I love these sandals! My old Tevas needed replacing and my friends love their Keens. I tried them on and they were perfect, without any breaking in. VERY comfortable. I am going to Belize this summer and they will be perfect water shoes. I've been hiking with them locally and they have already saved my toes from a lot of bumps and bruises - the toe guard is awesome. They dry quickly. And the "Whisper" style is a LOT less bulky than some of the other Keens I've seen out there - much more feminine.

I agree with the reviewer who said their foot slips backwards a bit out of them - but I haven't found that to be a problem. The heel strap keeps it from being uncomfortable, so it's just the edge of my heel that sometimes slips back from the sole. It's hardly noticeable.

Negative Reviews:

design pushes heel off shoe

I wish I read other reviews before buying these shoes and breaking them in. I had the problem with the heel coming out of the shoe. I did not notice the problem when standing/walking around REI when trying them out. I was actually excited that there was a shoe that accommodated my rather narrow feet. Plus, with the boxed in toe area, I could avoid accidentally ripping my toenail off again when hiking (ouchie!).Later down the track I noted that my heel extended over the shoe by 3cm or more. At the same time there would be several finger widths worth of space in the toe area. I couldn't figure out why this was so. I tried alternately tightening and loosening and eventually leaving the bungy strap undone, but the same thing happened every time. The whole foot would slip back off the shoe despite the heel strap around the back. It didn't hurt to walk in them like that though. What did hurt was when I used the shoe to hike through muddy/sandy places. The dirt and bits o' debris gets lodged under the shoe or under the straps and starts to rub and cause blisters. If I know I am going to be getting my feet wet, I will wear some thin black sock liners underneath. That works well to stop the abrading. It is difficult to remove debris from the shoes. The shoe usually has to come off to empty it. Another one of my beefs about this shoe is that it contains AEGIS. I called the company and they stated that this AEGIS incorporates nanoparticles in its products. I have stopped buying Merrell shoes for this reason (they openly advertise it on their shoes, Keens does not). I have kept wearing these shoes, hoping to wear them out quickly so I can replace them. Unfortunately, the shoe seems to be well-made and looks brand new despite 2 years of on/off use...so I guess I am stuck with them for a while. Can anyone explain why such an open shoe has a 'waterproof' label sewn on to the side of the shoe?!?!?!?

narrow

I am an avid Keen fan. Bought my first pair with a gift card from high school graduation and had them for four years. Convinced my husband to switch over to Keens (from just run of the mil sandals/hiking shoes) and now my son get a pair every summer.

This being said, I was sadly disappointed when these adorable shoes did not fit. They are incredibly narrow, I wear a size 9 in Keens and ordered the same size in the Whisper. The Newport and Newport H2 both fit perfectly in a nine, these were much much too narrow. Had to send back for a refund. Going back to the Newport line.
akmama87 at REI on 07/07/2011

Very disappointing

I loved the look of these and ordered a pair through REI online. I've had other Keens and they always run true to size. However, when these arrived my heel kept hanging off the back while there was a ton a room up by my toes. No matter how tight I adjusted the heel, I couldn't get my toes to move up and get my heel off the edge. I went to an REI store and tried a larger size and same thing happened-my toes were a full inch or more from the top but my heel was hanging off the back. Maybe my feet are just odd, but watch out for this.

I bought 2 pairs - size 6.5 and 7. Both are superbly good quality and made of good material sole and all around. But the size / fitting is not good for me. My last toe stick out on both pairs, even though the sandal fits well ( will work on both 6.5 or 7) on the front, back and side. If I wear this for y river treks, my toes will get seriously hurt since I will be jammed out even more on pressure when going downward. I returned both pairs with disappointments. Backcountry is great on their customer service as usual. Thank you.

Not your mother's Keens

Darn, I bought the wrong shoes! Keens "Whisper" just don't fit like my old (2 pairs of) Keen sandles. Bummer. I bought what I thought is my size, returned them, bought the next size smaller, headed out on a trip thinking they'd be great, but alas, they really don't fit. Since one of the folks at REI told me that the worst customer returns are shoes-People wear their purchases and then have the cheek to return them. So, I'm stuck. I will write Keen, REI is not responsible for this SNAFU.

not good for high insteps

I've had the Keen Venice H2 for years and finally wore them out. Tried the Whispers. Cuter shoe than the Venice. Tried it several times, but with my really high instep and arch- my foot would not fit down into the shoe. My heel hung off the back of the shoe, but I still have more than enough room in the toe box. Returning for the Venice H2 again!

Dont use on smooth wet surfaces!

When the sole is wet it is very slippery. I wore them at a therapy pool and when I reached the wet pool deck my feet slipped out from under me and I fell sustaining injuries to my knee, hip, and back. If they would reformulate the sole I would love them as they easily accomodate my hammer toes and seemed comfortable the short time I wore them.

Where did the real Keen's go?

I tried the sandals on and reboxed and sent them back the same day. These wonderful lightweight Keen Sandals were not made for the usual Keen customer, and after calling Keen, found out that they were made to attract main stream customers, totally ignoring the customers who have worn their shoes and sandals for years. Guess we don't deserve to have lightweight, summer sandals. Thanks Keen.

Run really small

This was to be a replacement for my old keens, and I ordered them in the same size as my old ones, but my foot is hanging off the back. Easily a full size off in sizing, and the width is much narrower than all of the other keens I've had, either sandals or closed shoes.

Right foot slides back

I was so excited to get these shoes, but was quickly disapointed. Once I got them home & walked around a bit. I noticed that my right foot was sliding when I walked. I'm thinking the right heel strap is too loose or stretched out. I hope these do not turn up on the discount rack.

Neutral Reviews:

Loved them...maybe a little too much

I loved these Keens except that they started breaking after only wearing them for a few months. I bought them to wear on canoeing trips and to wear as camp shoes. I went on a 10 day canoeing trip and these were perfect! I literally wore them for 10 days straight. They were super comfy and didn't need to be broken in. They stayed secure to my feet even when I was swimming in a rapid. Once out of the water they dried very quickly. I had these Keens for about 5 months before I noticed webbing near the heel separating from the sole of the shoe, but I returned them to REI and got a new pair! Since they didn't have any of the Whispers in my size I ended up getting the Newports instead. Having worn both styles of Keens I noticed that the Whisper's straps stretched out more easily than the Newports (could be because they're skinnier). Not a big deal though because the bungee helps the shoes stay on anyway. Overall, I really liked these shoes, but they didn't last very long for me. Maybe I was a little too rough on them?
Fun fact: after wearing these shoes canoeing over the summer, I developed awesome tiger-stripe tan lines on my feet!!
AlwaysAdventuring at REI on 11/11/2013

Different fit than the Waterport H2

I like how the webbing is neutral but the sole has a pop of color. The Whisper Keens fit completely different than the Waterport H2. I was initially happy about that because while I love the Waterport Keen's I've had for 10 years (and are just starting to fall apart), those do fit wide and run short. The Whispers are more narrow, which is great, and actually run a bit more true to size. What I didn't notice at first, is that the molding of the sole is completely different. The arch support is very low compared to the Waterport and is not placed properly (at least not for my feet). The sole of the heel also feels 'off'. While I can wear the Waterports for long hikes and day in and out without any soreness, I cannot do the same with the Whispers. After an hour I can tell my arches are not properly supported and my lower back starts feeling pressure. I have fairly high arches, so this wouldn't be a problem for those who don't. They are cute, and I'm sure they'll last forever. Given the current sale, I think I'll jump on the opportunity to purchase another pair of Waterport H2s!

Not what I expected

I've worn Keen Newport H2s for a number of years and I've loved them. They are hands down the most comfortable shoes I own. Their drawbacks have been that they are HOT and a little clunky looking. I was really looking forward to wearing Keen's new Whisper shoe. It has a really nice look to it and is much more open than the Newport (and hopefully not as hot during the heat of the summer). I was really disappointed that the arch support in the Whisper is significantly less than other Keen's I've worn. The sole also did not feel as substantial. I wore them around the house for about an hour and decided that these shoes are not for me. As cute as they are, they don't provide the comfort I've come to expect from Keen. I will be returning these shoes.

Depends on your feet--high instep beware

Loved these shoes for the first hour or so of wear--fit perfectly, but gradually my heel got pushed off the back of the shoe. Even when I loosened the straps, my foot still eventually was pushed back. I have a narrow foot, so my thought is that my high instep caused this to occur. I eventually took them back. So BEWARE if your midfoot is elevated--I think this pushes your foot backward on the shoe. Maybe a larger size would help this problem? Wish my feet worked for this shoe, cause I loved them otherwise.
Dingo at REI on 08/08/2012

Just ok

I've been a fan of Keen's Newport H2's for several years but was tempted by Whisper's more feminine, less chunky appearance. Whispers are indeed a bit cuter than the H2's. However I don't find them to be nearly as supportive or comfortable. Also, they itch almost unbearably across the top of the foot after a while. This may be a Whisper design flaw-- the stretchy elastic bands are coming into direct contact with my skin. For this reason I cannot recommend.
Dust Wind Girl at REI on 09/09/2010

needs velcro strap at heel

After wearing this shoe for a while, my heel slips back because the back strap is not firm enough to keep your foot in place. Then it feels like a clown shoe because the toe flaps. This effect gets worse if the shoe gets wet. Definitely not for water. If Keen put a velcro strap on heel, the shoe would be great.

Not a solid fit

I feel like when I wear the shoe my feet slide off the back. It is very uncomfortable the poor design of the back of the shoe. The shoe is well made, durable, but I would prefer if my foot does not slide off the back.
