Marmot Minimalist Jacket Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

I'm not exactly a mountaineer or even a casual hiker, but this jacket has kept me dry in New York City, London, and any other miserable, rainy place you can think of. I do have to agree with the velcro pockets. I don't have a huge issue with them, but they really aren't needed and take away from the coolness factor of the jacket. Nothing says "dork" like the sound of velcro, but the jacket is meant to keep you dry and it does look+feel great. HINT: You can always buy the other side of the velcro from a hardware store to rid yourself of this small issue.
If you are facing cold weather this must be layered, and there is plenty room for multiple layers. I've chosen my new Mountain Hardwear GWHD jacket as it's new partner, and they are a beautiful match in cold weather. I would highly recommend buying them together as you won't be disappointed with either.

I got this jacket a few months ago and finally got to use it last weekend while climbing Mt. Timp. I love the jacket, it kept me dry and blocked the wind while at the top. The fit is really nice, room for layering and the shell is definitely durable. My favorite feature is the hood. Cinch it up and you can turn your head in all directions and the hood is never in the way! My only complaint is that it is not quite as packable as some of the other rain shells out there but all the features and the price make up for that. I have found that If you fold it up into the hood you can get it pretty small. I'm 5'10 165 and the medium is a great fit.

I can't brag enough about the Minimalist jacket. I'm 5'11" 185 with an average middle-aged build, and the large fits me great. I've worn mine on treks through the Lake District of England and the Orkney Islands of Scotland. I wore the jacket alone for wind and rain protection, and paired with my soft shell for warmth when the temps dropped. (I also recommend the Minimalist pants!)
The pit zips are great and angel wing cut offers wonderful freedom of motion. I carried my camera in the chest pocket with no problem in the harsh elements of northern Scotland.
Great experience with Marmot products as well as Backcountry.

bought this on slae for 119. at first i thought that it would not last long as it is really thin and lightweight, but it holds up really well.
its great that it packs in its own pocket and has a biner loop, i dont even notice it on my harnes.
not the most confortable hood with a helmet, but it works fine.

Patricio Berra at Backcountry.com on 11/05/2013

This jacket has been used several times. It has a full cut, so I can use it to layer over top of other items. It has zippers in the arm pits to allow for breathing. The jacket repels water with ease. It was tested during a downpour while on a hike. Clothing kept dry.

I am planning on using this on my 2014 Appalachian Trail hike. I am 6'1", 175 lbs and I bought a large to fit over my Patagonia Down Sweater Hoody for outer-shell. I tried a medium and would work bit just a bit tighter. This Jacket is amazing. Light, breathable and completely waterproof!

Large is just long enough for my 6'4" 175lb. frame. Only slightly heavier than the likes of a marmot precip type jacket, but a significant upgrade in protection from the elements. No unnecessary features to add bulk when stashed in your pack. Also, really love the hood construction on this jacket.

Orginaly purchased this for a rain coat but find I use for all kind of things. It was used mostly last year in wet skiing weather. Nice and light weight and easy to thrown on when the weather gets wet. I won't leave home without it in my pack

John Pruitt at Backcountry.com on 05/29/2013

I bought this and the matching pants for my father, whose 15+ Year old rain gear was looking tired and starting to leak. He's used it a few times in light rain and wind, loves it and can't wait to take it out in some serious downpour.

This is my go to shell

Marmot's Minimalist Jacket is THE shell for wet conditions. I live in the Maritime NW, so I have a pretty informed opinion. Pit zips, Gore Tex, slightly oversized to function as an outer layer, what more can you need in a shell?

Negative Reviews:

This jacket got returned right away because of some major design flaws (all related to velcro). First, the hand pockets have zippers AND velcro to keep them closed. Zippers (as everybody knows) are enough, and the velcro scratches your hand every time you go in or out. And if you've got some kind of cloth glove then you can expect this jacket to rip them to shreds. Not just because you'll lose fome fabric every time you put your hands in your pockets, but also every time you take the jacket on or off. You see there's velcro at the top of the zipper to make sure it stays closed, so before you can open it you have to deal with it. And of course the sleeve closures have little velcro straps too. What ever happened to elastic. You know a good jacket has both vecro for overall adjustment AND elastic for taking it on and off...just enough for it to go over your gloved hand. Anyway, the fabric is awesome and the cut and look is very nice. But I got a Patagonia TorrentShell instead.
