Osprey Ariel 55 -

Carry up to 60 pounds in comfort when you backpack for the weekend with the Osprey Women's Ariel 55 Backpack. Its women-specific harness is wider in the collarbone and tapered in the chest area for carrying comfort, while the Ariel 55's women-specific pack design and IsoForm CM hip-belt balance firmness and cushioning. When you arrive at your campsite, the new J-shaped zip access lets you open up the Ariel 55 and pull out a layer without spilling everything else out of the bag, too.

Support and Cushioning:

  • Women-specific hip-belt takes into account that a women's hips are more conically shaped with a larger difference between the waist and hip measurements so you have a more comfortable load transfer and optimal support
  • HDPE framesheet and a center aluminum stay protect your back from bulky or pointy items and support heavy loads

Hipbelt:

  • Running down the sidewalls, the peripheral frame anchors to the load-lifter straps and hipbelt, transferring the load to your hips and resisting sag
  • Top lid can be removed and converted into a lumbar pack; hipbelt can be removed from the pack and attached to the lumbar pack for comfortable carrying

Sizing:

  • StraightJacket compression secures any size load

Comfort:

  • Ariel 55 comfortably carries a maximum weight of 60 pounds of your camping gear for overnight or weekend backpacking trips

  • Large top opening lets you effectively pack your gear while a front J-zip provides quick access to the main compartment during your hike
  • Large stretch mesh front pocket for quickly stashing extra gear, dual access stretch mesh side pockets for your water bottle or flask, and zippered hip-belt pockets provide secure storage for your camera or energy goo

Fabric:

  • Top pocket converts to a lumbar pack with a built-in belt for convenience when you take short day hikes away from camp (built-in belt stores behind the fabric lumbar pad when not in use)
  • Zippered hipbelt pockets and stretch-woven side pockets keep essentials accessible; stretch-woven front pocket with welded vent accepts Osprey AddOns™ (sold separately)
  • Strong, durable fabric offers you a solid pack for years to come
  • Osprey Ariel 55 pack shaves weight yet remains tough with a 210-denier double-ripstop nylon and 500-denier plain-weave oxford nylon bottom
  • LightWire peripheral frame effectively transfers load weight to the hip-belt while the Airscape back panel features a smooth spacer mesh lumbar fabric for breathability and comfort

Fit:

  • Removable hipbelt can be custom molded for a perfect anatomical fit; it offers superior load support, stiffness and padding with dual-density foam for enhanced comfort
  • New spacer mesh IsoForm4 harness provides comfortable fit
  • Women-specific shoulder harness consists of thoughtful angle changes and varying padding thickness to create an anatomical fit for a woman's neck, shoulders, and chest while a sternum strap equalizes the pressure across the shoulder harness
  • Women's IsoForm CM hip-belt balances firmness and cushioning for optimal carry while the IsoForm harness provides a women-specific comfortable fit during your ladies weekend backpacking trip

Padding:

  • Trekking pole attachment, side gear straps, ice axe tool loops, cord loop attachment slots and removable sleeping pad straps accommodate a variety of alpine gear
  • Dual-side compression straps, removable sleeping pad straps, two ice axe loops and handle wraps, and Stow-on-the-Go trekking pole attachment for convenience

Ventilation:

  • Women's dual-density foam harness with spacer mesh promotes airflow and wicks away moisture during warm weather and intense activity

The Ferrari of Backpacks

I used this pack when I hiked Mount Whitney a few weeks ago. I am 5'4", 118lbs, with a 17" torso. I have the women's small size, and it was perfect. I loaded the pack with 30lbs of gear for the trip.

I found that it had adequate room for my portion of the gear. The hip pockets added a huge degree of functionality; I could put my pocket camera in one pocket, and a snack or two in the other. Since it seemed like a few hikers in my group were on a verge of inpatient, the easy access to both of those items helped a ton. Besides, I feel like I constantly have to munch when I'm on these types of excursions.

A feature that had the rest of the group jealous was the detachable summit pack. I removed the padded hip belt and used that instead of the integrated straps on the summit pack, and I'm glad I did. Incredibly comfortable, and the perfect size for a summit pack.

The stow and go trekking pole loops are amazing. Same category of functionality as the hip/side pockets.

Even though this pack is not the lightest pack out there, it didn't matter because it was so comfortable and supported the weight inside the pack well. Additionally, I had the hip belt molded, which alleviated any pressure on my bony bits.

The water bladder pocket is easy to access. I had no trouble getting the bladder back in, even with a full pack.

Overall, this backpack really made my trip most enjoyable. Once I put the pack on and tightened the straps appropriately, it fit comfortably for hours of hiking with no fiddling with the straps!

Love at first hike!

I tried several backpacks at REI and this one fit like a glove. I had been hiking with about 20lbs in my daypack for my training hikes and after putting this pack on and loading it up with another 10lbs it felt just as comfortable. I didn't feel the weight increase at all. I love the pockets on the belt. I love the air flow on my back, I still get warm but it helps SO much. I do wish there was maybe one more smaller pocket on the outside. My daypack has the pockets on the inside and outside of the lid as well as a 2 pockets on the outside sides and I really miss that on this bag because the lid is really the only place to put the smaller items I like to have access to such as sunscreen, snacks, bug spray and my emergency kit, etc. Because I'm missing those my lid pocket gets very heavy/awkward. Overall, I feel this pack is easy to adjust, it's easy to access pack contents and is very comfortable even when carrying a bit of weight, everything you need in a pack.

beautiful and well made

i bought for my granddaughter to take to France for summer with her university (michigan State) project. she did not want luggage; wanted a backpack she could use for hiking/camping across country too.
this is a beautiful backpack. i went to the local (Sonora CA) outdoor store where i buy kayaks, etc and looked at one.
WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IN ADDITION:
1) i dont think it had the separate bottom compartment for sleeping bag i saw on most others.
2) i really wanted a "bag" to slip it into for airport travel to keep straps safe, etc. when i called the store said no bags for any that they knew of but i am sure my granddaughter said some friends had one with a bag.

Osprey continues to excel!

Replaced wife's uncomfortable Northface Terra 40 (twisting shoulder straps) with the Ariel 55. Even with more gear this pack is very comfortable. It packs the gear very efficiently even though it lacks exterior pockets. My wife and I just got back from The Sisters Wilderness and the pack met all expectations!! This is the 4th Osprey pack we now own. Great products..Great customer service!!!

Love it so far

Had to return the small and order the extra small, so was worried about the fit, but it had plenty of adjustability! Have only used it for one 10 mile trip, but love it so far though. I'm 5'4", about 120 lbs.

best back for multi-day travel

This is one of the most comfortable and custome multi-day backpacks on the market. Great for the ultra-light thru-hiker but can carry the load of a climber. The padding is a little minimal but worth saving the little bit of weight.

Perfect Pack

Very nice pack. Just the right size, with sleeping bag compartment. Nice that the water compartment is separate from the storage area. Purchased due to the hip belt padding and how comfortable that was.

Just a so so pack

I have tried many packs in the past and was excited for Osprey's 2013 Ariel Series to come out. I ordered the 55 for a 3 month backpacking trip and I will be soon returning the pack. I'm petite 5' tall and after struggling with the weight in the 2012 Ariel Series I thought the lighter 2013 series would work for me but that isn't the case. I also loved the hipbelt in the 2012 Ariels but it turns out Osprey has really built up the new hipbelts making them much less flexible and much heavier. I spoke with Osprey but you can't use the 2012 hipbelts on the new packs. I like osprey's designs in general but this pack was really made for someone 5'5' or taller given the height of the pack, and the extra bulk in the hipbelt padding. Osprey does have a lighter weight model but again the height of it makes it very awkward to carry when you are in the XS suspension .
