I am a member of a GORE-TEX product testing team and received this hat a sample while working at a gear store about 5 years ago.
That said, these hats are great. They last forever (mine doesn't show any wear and tear and my father has had one for at least 10 years) and are very functional.
I will readily admit that they aren't the most stylish thing out there, but whether you're venturing out in the rain, wind or sun, this hat does a great job of protecting you from the elements. The brim keeps rain off the face and back of you neck and shades you from the sun. The velcro patches make it easy to hold the sides up and the chin cord ensures that your hat won't run away from you.
I use mine primarily in the rain and on river trips - they are warm enough that I don't love using it in the middle of the summer when it's hot and sunny out (although I have used it for that purpose on occasion).
The Sombrero's light and packs down enough that it will easily disappear in a back pack.
All in all, a great hat if you pick function over form.
I was looking for an all weather hat to keep off the sun and rain. This hat was so highly rated that I decided to take a chance even though the standard comment was that it was not very attractive on. I got the hat yesterday and can't wait to wear it! The hat is VERY nice and looks nice on. The quality of the construction and the reviews that say it can take a beating and still look great for years won me over and I am glad I made this purchase. My husband liked mine so much that he wants one. I ordered the small based on the sizing chart and it fits EXACTLY right. While my husband's head circumference is the same, his head is taller from the eyes up and the hat fits a little small on him that way so he will go with the medium and just use the head band adjustment strap to tighten it a little if necessary.
Well this thing seems pretty solid. Very soft lining so my balding head feels great in it. There is an adjustable hook and loop strap inside to help get that perfect fit. Now I just need to get some rain. Best go to Seattle.
