Excellent first shoes!

As a new climber, I went through the course of trying on multitudes of rock climbing shoes. I liked the way these looked, as I have a wide foot near the balls of my feet, but a smaller, skinnier heel. I knew these would be a better fit for me, just looking at them, but at the time the REI I was at didn't have my size. I settled on the La Sportiva Tarantulaces, but I wasn't completely set on them.

Later I went back to REI and they had the size of the La Sportiva Nagos that I wanted, and I tried them on and fell in love with them. They were snug without being painful, and fit the form of my foot the best out of all the shoes I had tried on! Though I'm not experienced enough to tell how well they do performance-wise, I do know that with the pointier toe, I'm able to push up from smaller holds on the wall. I think the pointier toe is conducive to practicing using your toes instead of your whole foot as well! Good for a first-time climber!

The only downside is I feel like they do stretch a bit, as they are leather. This is no matter really for me because I just lace them up a bit tighter.

I am in love with these climbing shoes and highly recommend them to anyone interested in climbing!

great shoe for long climbs

I got my pair at the REI garage sale in Boulder for a super deal (used once, returned because they were too small and my REI co-op discount on top of that). For the price I got them for, they're a really great pair of shoes. I started climbing about a year ago and I got up to 5.10b/c's within a few months with these. They're comfortable enough that you can wear them for hours at a climbing gym and not have to adjust them too much or re-lace them, and they performed solidly when I went outside in Boulder Canyon. I can't even wear my old pair of shoes any more because the grip and sensitivity isn't the same. They work for bouldering, but I'm at the point where I am thinking of purchasing a different shoe to wear for bouldering because these aren't very aggressive.

It's a great beginner shoe because of the price and comfort, and good if you plan on being in them for a while. Be warned that the heel is a little loose for ladies who have slender/narrow heels. When I jump down from the wall, there's always air pockets that escape and cause shoe farts! As the other reviewers stated, the upper leather will stretch over time. If I had a choice in sizing I would have gotten half a size smaller (5.5 - 6 street shoe, and my Nagos are 35s).

Incredible shoes!

These are by far my favorite shoes. They are so comfortable and the edging is great. I've used these outdoors exclusively and have had great results. I've worn them for multi-pitch friction climbing and it sticks very well even though it's a little harder than the normal shoes that you would want for friction climbing. On the long multi-pitch climbs, it's comfortable but I would recommend taking these off for rappelling. My big toes were slightly sore after I rapped with them on day one. That's normal when you're in climbing shoes for seven hours straight on multi-pitch. I wore these shoes three days straight and my feet were fine. I have a pair of Katana and they were painful to wear even on short climbs. My toes were excruciating doing one climb in my Katana but these shoes were amazing. I didn't really have a break in period. I normally wear a 6.5-7 street shoes and got a 37 in these. I would highly recommend them!

Nice for Newbies

I'm a new climber, and I bought these shoes at an REI store after trying on several other brands (Mad Rock, Evolv, and one I can't remember) and the difference in fit was huge. These were by far the most comfortable and felt like they disappeared on my feet once I put them on. I've been wearing them 2-3 times a week for a few weeks, and I don't really feel like they've stretched out much yet, but maybe it'll take another month or so. I like that there's enough room in the toe area that they don't bother my feet, but I can still get a good grip on small holds. I knocked off a star because there is some thread unwraveling on one shoe, although they do have a warranty.

I wear an 8.5-9 in shoes, and I have a size 41, so either they're going to stretch out like crazy or I have weird feet.

Good Beginner shoe

I bought these as my first pair of climbing shoes. The fit felt amazing in the store and continued to feel great while climbing. These shoes have minimal stretch. I'd buy them so they are just a hair uncomfortable with slightly crimped toes, they stretch to fit like a glove.

My biggest and only gripe is that they are not sticky at all. My feet slip off of tiny holds, which isn't a big deal while doing beginner/ intermediate routes, but the second I started climbing 5.10(+), I find my feet slipping off holds constantly (my fingers are disliking that).

If I had to go back and do it all again, I would have just sprang for the extra $$ and bought better shoes right off the bat instead of wishing I had new shoes 2 months later.

I give them 4 stars as a beginner shoe, but these are practically useless once you advance.

Great all around comfort/beginner shoe!

I bought these on sale with the hopes of getting a great all around comfort shoe that I could use on anything. These def fit the criteria! When i first got these the shoes were so small on my feet that the tips of my toes would go numb after being in them for about 30min and at first I thought that I got the wrong shoe size... But after stretching them out by climbing in them as well as when not climbing they slowly stretched, and now they fit perfectly....

Beware... they WILL stretch, I reccomend getting at least a half size smaller than what you would normally climb in. but otherwise I love these shoes, they feel great to be in all day. It was a few months after i bought these that i realized i should've gotten an agressive pair of shoes for overhangs... but i got a new pair for that...

Great Shoes!!

I am an avid climber, 5 times a week indoors at the least. I climbed outdoors for the first time in these shoes a couple weeks ago and had no problem flashing a 5.10a. They fit like a glove and they stretched about a 1/2 size to a full size for me. I wear 8-8.5 street shoe and a 36.5 in their size which is a 5.5 Women's. I plan on going down one more size. The shoes smear well, I've had no problems with heel hooks and the rubber is wonderful. I had Evolve Elektra's before this and I can never go back. They are great shoes for beginners because they're really comfortable after a few days of climbing and the fit is truly amazing. I do recommend going down at the very least by 1/2 to a full size with these shoes because they do stretch.

So far So good

These are my first pair of shoes but so far they are working out great. I have only been climbing a few months so I've only climbed indoor at the gym but they perform very well. I read many reviews online before going to the store to try on so I wasn't expecting them to be comfortable enough to belay in but they are fine. I climb with my husband and daughter so we have to rotate, but I've never felt like I needed to take them off.
I normally wear a 7.5-8 and I purchased a 9.5 so they run pretty small. I recommend trying them on in the store to avoid annoying returns.
I rated them 4 stars because I don't speak from much experience and haven't used them outdoors yet but for me I am very pleased.

Decent all-around shoe

This is the first pair I've actually bought--I've borrowed and rented many different brands in the past. These have enough stick to them to be useful and they seem pretty durable. They definitely stretch; based on other reviews I made sure to buy what seemed a little small for me and after about five days of climbing now they've stretched to be comfortable.

I think I personally prefer a more compliant, stickier shoe, especially for outdoor climbing where footholds may require more creativity, but I think these will hold up longer than a softer shoe. For climbing indoors they are great and have plenty of stick to smear up a face.

Overall I would say these are a great all-around shoe and a good buy as a versatile pair for outdoor and especially for indoor climbing.

Great for edging and smearing!!

This is my first pair of climbing shoes that have the x-grip rubber and it's true to its name. Many of my friends have La Sportiva & it was highly recommended. After trying the Katana model; I wasn't crazy about the fit. The Nago caught my eye and tried them...wow! The fit was great since I have a wide foot. I took them outside to test their edging ability and I was amazed. I found little small indentions and was able to make it stick. This will definitely boost your confidence knowing that your shoes will stick! I tested them indoor and wasn't impress so I think this is a better outdoor shoe. I plan to resole one of my other climbing shoes with this sticky rubber. On top that, the Nago cost much less than the Katana.

Negative Reviews:

To be avoided

My last shoes were 5.10 Coyotes; needed a new pair and chose these after much deliberation. I easily could have gotten another pair of Coyotes (I think they're great!), but I thought I'd try something new. These were more expensive, so naturally I thought they were a little more advanced. Big mistake.

These felt okay in the store but were comically bad to climb in. No smearing ability, no stickiness, no edging, no sensitivity, no nothing. Wore them twice, thinking I'd give them another shot. Pfft. As an added bonus, they're really, really uncomfortable. These are to be avoided.

cut into ankle

I'd been climbing at my college gym with free rental shoes for half a year when I decided it was time to get my own pair of climbing shoes. These shoes felt very comfortable at the store. Later at the climbing wall, I discovered that the shoe puts a lot of pressure on the soft spot right above my ankle bone whenever I twist my foot. That wouldn't happen if the shoe was a tiny bit higher around the ankle. I ended up returning this pair and now I am back to rentals.

Maybe I just chose the wrong shoe for my feet?
