Super versatile

I've been using these jackets for a bit over a year now (I own two of them) for everything from backpacking/hiking to sea kayaking to back-country skiing/snowboarding. I probably have 90 days or more doing various activities in coastal Alaska so far. These are brilliant mid-layers under a hardshell in more severe conditions, or as an outer layer when it's just breezy and cool. The jacket dries very fast and shrugs off wind. It only weighs about 9 ounces. The hood is non-adjustable but fits nicely over your bare or beanie'd head (no way it would go over a helmet). The hood is two layers of shell fabric (non-insulated) as are the forearms below the elbow. The rest of the jacket is lined with a light woven material with a brushed interior face. Very comfy and easy to pull on. The fit is much more 'athletic' and fitted than the old Marmot Driclime stuff. I found the original Driclime windshirts to be a bit baggy, so I like the new fit a lot. It really only goes over a light base layer though, so don't expect this to be a shell over some heavy fleece. The two zippered handwarmer pockets are plenty big and lined with the brushed woven material. A mesh-lined chest pocket is big enough for a stocking cap and has an earphone port leading in through the lining. Underarm panels are made from a mesh material for extra venting. All the zippers are adequate in size to last for the life of the jacket. I'm 5'11" and 190 pounds with long arms, and the size large fits perfectly. Overall, really a wonderful piece of kit. I got a women's version for my wife and she digs it too.

The only downside is that the shell material is quite delicate and can snag and cause puckers if subjected to abrasive vegetation or rocks. A material that did not snag quite so easily would be the only improvement I would suggest. I would subtract a star due to the issue of durability, but if you recognize the that this is not a hardshell to be abused and treat the jacket appropriately you should get a few years of use out of it.

I use this jacket to run in the Midwest; it gets very cold and windy here in the winter and I don't want to be running in a winter coat. I've used it from the teens to the forties (Fahrenheit, obviously) with just a base layer underneath and its excellent design really shows. I don't overheat thanks to its lightness (under a pound, I think), pit vents, and unparalleled driclime wicking. The windbreaking nylon cuts through wind and is surprisingly resilient; it's ripstop. The hand warmer pockets are great for glove storage, and the hood can fit over a cap (or under a helmet), and it won't blow off if you zip it up all the way. The hood in this position does a great job of holding headphones in place. I used it ~4 times a week for the past month before needing to wash it (got stinky after a while). I haven't been able to test the DWR in the field yet, but holding the sleeves under the faucet has left my arms bone dry. Doesn't get wet; dries super fast even if it does (from inside OR out). I've found myself taking the jacket for a run even if I probably don't need it; it's so light I barely notice it if I have to wrap it around my waist. I'll definitely take it to the beach or any future hiking trips, and it will definitely be my mid layer on any skiing trips - the jacket's temp range is incredible, and I love it. Most useful garment I own. Fits true to size, but a little tight by design - works best when close to the body.

Great ultralight jacket!

I have wanted a Driclime for years--I even bought an original Driclime windshirt and gave it to my wife because it is too warm for hiking and too inflexible compared to an the equivalent-weight ultralight windbreaker plus a polyester longsleeve shirt. I have also always wanted a hoodie, but have been unwilling to pay for one.

Finally, I have my hoodie AND an ultralight version of a Driclime that is not too warm for me to use while hiking. This is a bit expensive, but it is great for the intended purpose--hiking in possibly-windy, cool or cold conditions. Finally I have a Driclime that I am willing to carry. I used it recently on a 20 mile, 2-day backpack. I also find it the jacket-of-choice for walking the dog on 50F nights when the wind is blowing. The only reason I don't wear it to work is that I have lower-cost options that work for day-to-day wear.

Great product!

Love all the driclime stuff I've tried, and I've found this piece to be the most useful for me. For the price you can't go wrong with the basic Marmot windshirt (still got mine!), but if you want a few more bells and whistles like a waist draw cord, more pockets and a hood, this is a good move. Packs down small, lightweight, surprisingly warm, windproof, water-resistant and very, very breathable. Like the basic windshirt this a great mid-layer in a variety of temps and with the hood, pockets, etc., it's a very useful stand-alone jacket as well. I wear this thing on a regular basis about 3/4 of the year, and I have found it to be useful for running in extreme conditions.

This is versatile jacket. I use it under my shell and over a 200 merino baselayer for snowboading in CO. So far it has been great! It beets using a fleece midlayer as it is slippery and moves well with the base and shell. The hood is a bit of a pain in the ass. It has a tab to roll up and store it but it seems to loosen and get goofy. I just stuff it under itself and call it good. Plus it weighs so little. No reason not to bring it with you anytime you head out side.

Nice jacket, Trim Fit.

I'm 5'10 and 170 pounds and my chest measures 41 inches, waist 33 inches. The medium jacket fit perfectly, a nice trim athletic fit all the way through but I found it too tight across the shoulders. I really liked the jacket and wanted it to fit. I returned it to my local REI and they didn't have any in stock so I couldn't try on a large. I'm afraid it would be too big in all the other areas. I may order it though to try it on because I really liked the jacket.

I accumulated a bunch of gear for an excursion to Alaska and this turned out to be the best piece I brought. It was warm, wind proof, water proof, and light weight. The inner fleece made it cozy, the good was essential, and in love that you can stuff it into it's own chest pocket for easy storage. It comes out wrinkled tho, so if you're not down with that, don't use that feature. This coat is awesome.

This was to be my 2nd, because 1st is so great and this new one has hood. Best all around jacket I've ever owned. New one ordered same size as old one, but could barely zip new one while old accomodates multiple layers under.
Will probably try to find locally to check size before reordering, becaue I don't like paying return postage for something that appears sized wrong.

Have owned a driclime for several years and think it's the best so couldn't pass up ether on sale and hood is great idea. However, jacket too small in XL despite my meeting xl specs and old one being xl. Could barely zip over chest. Also note specs fail to note there are two zippered side pockets which are nice to have.

lareja542834 at Backcountry.com on 01/30/2012

I was looking for a jacket that I could wear during work and not get too hot, but also something that I could put under and hardshell layer. This is perfect for both. It's super light, packs down well, and keeps you warm. Perfect by it's self for a light jacket or great for a base layer in the winter.

Negative Reviews:

I returned this jacket because it reminded me of old, low-tech, 2-layer fleece / nylon jackets I owned in the 80s, and not in a good way.
It is basically just a nylon shell with a free-floating brushed poly zip-t that hangs inside. I expected a modern, two-layer laminated fabric, but what this in fact is is two garments stitched together only at the wrists, hem, and neck.
It felt and looked lumpy, the nylon was noisy in motion, and it had no stretch. The wrists and hood elastic had no adjustability.
Frankly, I'd rather just wear a poly base layer and single-layer nylon windbreaker and have the option to remove each layer independently.
I had intended the jacket as a wind-resistent yet breathable layer for backcountry skiing & hiking.
Instead I got the Mountain Hardwear Onata Softshell.
It doesn't have a hood and weighs 4 ounces more, but the breathability, DWR, adjustable cuffs, fit, feel, & stretch of the Onata are just what I was looking for.
Fit notes: I'm 6'1", 155lbs with 35" long arms, and the XL I ordered was way too baggy. According to the Marmot size chart, I was between a Medium and Large size, but those sizes were out of stock at that time.

XL isn't what it used to be

I am 6'1" and 204 lbs. This jacket fits very tight across the back and shoulders. I could not add layers without really restricting my movement. This is very disappointing in what otherwise seems to be the perfect backpacking shell. I don't see an XXL available.
