Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat II -

Down is just as functional on the city streets as it is in the mountains, and wherever you find yourself, you want to be warm. The crew at Mountain Hardwear designed the Women’s Downtown II Down Coat to give you city-wise style with big-mountain warmth. Longer than some but shorter than a floor-length ballgown, this down coat goes downtown to midtown and then to uptown, keeping you warm from your head to your knees.

Down is the standard by which to judge all insulation, offering more warmth per unit weight than synthetic insulation. The feathers and plumules that compromise down intermingle and create a network of fibers and air pockets. The air pockets create a divider between cold outside air and warm air generated by your hot bod. Consequently, the cold air stays outside and the warm air stays close to your body, and you stay warm while walking home from the subway station. The high-pile Velboa fleece lining feels soft against your skin; while it's tempting to wear just the Downtown II coat alone because of the super-soft lining, it's not advisable to forgo clothes when the temps are in the teens.

An insulated hood zips off when you don't need head protection, and the faux-fur trim is just as easy to remove if you're attending the winter pro-animal conference in Denver and don't want to chance anyone mistaking your trim for the real thing. A fleece-lined chin-guard protects your chin from chafing caused by freezing metal rubbing against your skin, and fleece-lined pockets add a bit of warmth to your hands. Though this coat sports a generous center-back length and lofty 650-fill down, distinctly feminine lines and seams reduce the chances of someone asking you if you're wearing a sleeping bag.

Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat II Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

Let me preface the review by saying that I'm one of those people that is always cold. This coat is not windproof, and there are definitely warmer (and much more expensive) coats out there, but I think it does a pretty good job keeping me warm. I took the dog for a walk when it was 23 degrees out with a breeze. I was wearing just a t-shirt and a hoodie underneath, and while I wasn't toasty, I wasn't freezing either, just a mild chill with the wind. The next day I had a thick sweater on, 18 degrees with a wind chill of 3 degrees. I was warm (not toasty, but quite comfortable). So, it helps to be properly dressed under the coat for better warmth.
As far as fit, I am just under 5'6 and 160 pounds and the medium fits fine. It gives me some shape where I need it with the drawstring at the waist. The length and sleeves are perfect. The hood is very warm and stayed on when the wind was blowing, so if I'm just in and out of the car or not outside for long, I don't have to worry about a hat. The first time wearing it with it zipped all the way up the zipper was uncomfortable on my chin, but it has gotten better with wear. And for the bottom zipper, I don't have to worry about zipping it up for extra room getting in and out of the car. I have enough room for movement even trying to get my toddler in his car seat.

Performs exactly as promised. Keeps me warm in the Chicago cold. It's very light weight but very warm.. The hood is snug, adjustable and stays on in the wind. The fur trim acts like a wind visor, when needed, or it can be folded back. The hood does not drop over my eyes, so I can see. The coat has an adjustable, hidden elastic that one can pull to give a more hour glass effect to the coat or let out to accommodate layers. It's not as bulky as the picture makes it look. I am 5.6, and typically wear size 8 or 10. The medium is roomy without being too big. It covers my rear end and hits me mid thigh. If you normally wear a size medium and are an 8 or a 10, a medium will work perfectly over a winter sweater. My first Mountain Hardware purchase - I'm pleased!

I live in Wisconsin, we have cold and windy weather. I was looking for a warm, longer coat with a hood. I also did not want to look like the michelin man with the coat being really puffy. The coat does not do that. The fleece lining is really warm and so far I have been warm and it makes going outside a lot easier. I ordered a small and can still wear a sweater or sweatshirt underneath without being restricted at all. For reference I am 5'7" and 115 lbs.

My wife wanted a warm coat that was long enough to cover her rear end. This coat fit the bill and she has been wearing it constantly since Christmas.

Negative Reviews:

After reading reviews on warm winter parkas, I decided to try out the Downtown coat as it received generally favorable reviews. When I received it, I immediately noticed how soft and warm it is. The fleece lining on the inside is really lovely and a great touch to the comfort of this coat. I wanted to love this coat, but when I tried it on, there was something very odd about the fit in the arms and shoulders. The torso fit well, especially with a few layers underneath, but the arms and shoulders were cut for a heavyweight arms were swimming in them (and i am a swimmer so am not at all narrow shouldered). I don't know if this is how the jacket is supposed to be cut, but it was not at all flattering to say the least. I am about 5'8'' and 140 lbs and ordered a M, and besides the strange arm size of the coat, the torso area fit well. Sadly, the coat is going back, but Backcountry had excellent service so it was easy to facilitate.
