Super Cell Jacket Review

I bought this Jacket when it first came out, its going on 2 years now. Its an incredible jacket for its weight, and still holding up to heavy usage. I use it exclusively for work. I have taken it into heavy rains and very cold weather, to probably a tune of 8 months out of the year. Im 5'11 180 lbs and own a large. Fits fine in the arms, and a bit loose in the torso region, but fits great with bulky down/synthetic jacket underneath, or a lightweight jacket too. I give it 5 stars because of the durability, weight, and pack-ability of the jacket for Patagonia's lightest-weight shell. For something so lightweight, I did not think it will hold up to 2 years of abuse. I did not take care of the washing instructions of the jacket, but if I did I think I could have gotten a couple of more years out of it. The water proof zippers work great, no issues. The draw strings help make a great fit, and nicely placed it never snags on anything. The water used to just run off the jacket. But because I did not take care of the washing instructions, the water absorbs into the outside material... BUT! still stays dry on the inside. Just very slight leakage from the seams. The windproof is spot on. never any issues. Just add a under coat according to the temp, and you are good to go.

Great Shell!!!

First weekend (mid-March) with this jacket I took it up Mailbox Peak and it was a perfect day to test it out. In typical Mailbox fashion, the trail was muddy, the weather was terrible (cold and raining at the bottom with icy wind and blowing snow at the top), and of course it was painful. Anyone that has tackled Mailbox knows you get hot and sweaty right off the bat due to the intensity of the trail. This jacket performed brilliantly. I opened the pit zips and raged up the trail (hood down) with no issues. Got to the open rock field where the weather turned really bad, threw up the hood and started to scramble. I got a little chilly from the blowing snow, closed up the pit zips and got back to a comfortably cool temperature. Full disclosure, I didn't make it to the top that day because the weather started to deteriorate too quickly once I got past the first rock field but I left knowing I had made a great purchase. Since then, this jacket has gone out to the Olympics and WA coast with more great results.

One note on the sleeve length. I have longer arms and struggle to find jackets that fit well. This one fits ME great but might seem a little long for someone with regular length arms.

Swanky Jacket

This is an excellent coat. The fit is great - not to bulky and not too tight. The arms are nice and long, I have long arms. The GORE-TEX is extremely waterproof and breaths nicely. the pit zips give extra ventilation when needed. It also packs down very small and light which means you never have to be without bomber rain gear. The adjustments on the helmet are very easy to use and it fits a climbing helmet nicely. All in all I am very pleased with this product and would highly recommend it.

Light and waterproof

I'm a professional outdoor educator and go through a hardshell every two or three years. The Super Cell is holding up well after a couple of canoe trips and most of a season of ice climbing. Very light and good breathability. I wish it had an 'up zip' (a double pull zipper so that you can belay in it more easily) but then I think the same about all jackets. I'm wider than your average skinny alpinist and this fits me very well, better than some Patagonia clothing. Thumbs up for this jacket.

Great Shell

This summer in the Southeast has brought record rainfall and humidity. Georgia has turned into a rainforest with humidity levels staying at 99% for months. It takes a well built rain shell to function properly in these conditions and the Super Cell gets the job done. As an Outdoor Educator I need gear that is durable and performs. I could not be happier with this jacket. For sizing, I am 6'2" 180lbs and the large fits perfectly with room for layers in winter.

good for Scotland in June

I've had two other shells of this type, one by Mountain Hardware, the other by Marmot, and I was hoping that the gortex shell would be more breathable. It's not, but it's certainly less crinkly and will no doubt be a bit more durable. I used it for two days of hiking in the Scottish highlands with wind and intermittent rain every day, and it did well when combined with torrentshell pants and high-teck undergarments.

Yes, lightweight, but not very breathable

Just returned from a 10 day trip in the Weminuge (near Silverton CO). The jacket was waterproof and light, but not breathable, even after moderate scouting, it was wet inside. I love the fit, it layers well, the hood has a great design to keep it snug, but I like the other goretex fabric more than the paclite-goretex. As always, I expect this raincoat to last and last, all Patagonia gear is super durable.
cheekyozi1 at Patagonia on 10/05/2013

It does what it is supposed to do. It blocks the elements while running outside in nd winters. I'm 6'2" and bought an Xl. The length is good in the torso and sleeves but if i we're to buy it again I would order a lg. The hood adjusts easily and it has pit zips. Its hard to find anything to really complain about with this jacket.

great in the tropical rain forest

This jacket has been spectacular in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. It can be 100 degrees with 100 percent humidity and rain at a moments notice. This jacket will keep you dry yet still breath so you don't sweat. In this picture it was a cold night in the highlands. 10k ft at Hides Hela province. Im also sporting my FCD beanie!

All-Day

I wear this jacket all-day every day. Whether I am walking to work, skiing, coaching, or pub crawling with friends, this jacket is awesome. Zippers are great and durable and the pockets are well placed. Definitely wear a nice sweater and/or a nano-puff jacket underneath however. There is not much insulation. But it will keep you dry and looking good!

Negative Reviews:

Poor Quality Control...

While I had high hopes for this jacket, multiple copies of it have been plagued with similar problems pertaining to the internal cord locks. My first copy of this jacket had a hem cord lock that would cinch tight, but wouldn't release without taking the jacket off and pushing the elastic cord back through the lock; one side was fine, the other had the problem. At my expense, I mailed my defective jacket back to a nearby store and they shipped me a replacement. The replacement has the same issue with the hem cord lock, but also, the cord locks on the hood do not hold tight. Actually, they don't hold at all. Once cinched, they slip and release when I raise my head and look up. Plus, the rear hood adjustment locks down tight, but doesn't release when the cord lock button is pressed. A call to Patagonia's 800 number did not resolve the matter; it was suggested I send in the jacket to the warranty department, and it would be replaced in several weeks! I have many, many Patagonia pieces which have performed flawlessly over the past decade and a half of ownership, but in terms of quality control, Patagonia seems to have missed the mark with this jacket. Sadly, Patagonia's customer service was also unhelpful in resolving the problems I've experienced with this jacket.
J098 at Patagonia on 12/29/2013

Rare Disappointment

Judging from the other reviews of this product, my opinion seems to be anomaly, but I've been really disappointed with this jacket - which is, in itself, disappointing, since I generally love Patagonia products. The issue is not the entire jacket, since the fit and finish are typical Patagonia quality, but rather the effectiveness of the 'waterproof' Gore-Tex Paclite fabric, which seems to allow any significant rainfall to quickly penetrate the shell, and the breathability seems marginal as well. Perhaps I'm expecting too much, but it hardly seems to qualify for the term 'rainwear' - more like 'mistwear'.
jdubski at Patagonia on 09/17/2013

I read about Pac Lite and generally like Patagonia products. I bought this jacket just before leaving for China. After using it for one day, I was very dissatisfied for the following reasons:
- No internal pocket. Certainly even a lite, net style pocket is possible
- The hood is attached in some way that is neither foldable nor attached in a way that allows it to lay in a way that looks anything other than very ugly.
- cuffs have no elastic, which should be easy to add.
- fit seems generally poor
