great pack liners

I have two of each size (plus a 1L) of these siliconized dry bags. My husband and I have used them many times for multiple-night backpacking trips and canoeing in the Boundary Waters. We use them as pack liners inside our backpacks or portage packs - we think they're great - lightweight and easy-to-pack. We try to pack them so that anything hard is packed in the middle of the pack so it won't poke the fabric - we do have some abrasion spots/scuffing where something hard or pointy has rubbed against the sides, but so far, all of the bags are air-tight and sound. I can get most of the air out of the bags by loosely folding the top over, smooshing the air out with my weight, and then rolling up the closure - the trickiest part is making sure the contents don't get carried up into the roll. The 35L bags will hold two regular-length REI Trekker sleeping pads or our synthetic-fill sleeping bags + liners (in lightweight compression bags). We use either the 20L or 13L bags for our clothes/personal bags (depending on the season/length of trip) and the 8L bags for our fleece/insulated jackets. The 4L holds my binoculars or a light-weight first aid kit and we use the 1L for my husband's compact camera/batteries/SD cards (splash-proofing). We did get a small hole in his camera bag, but that's because it got caught in his waist pack zipper. We patched it with some lightweight "duct" tape (on the inside) and it's been fine. I wouldn't expect these bags to be 100% waterproof, certainly not in a submersed situation, and definitely not for waterproofing electronics – but they work great with canvas portage packs in a puddly canoe and they keep fabric-items dry if the gear bag takes a quick dunk into the lake or it rains cats-and-dogs while backpacking. Another plus: they're easy to clean - I usually give them a good swish-rinse after every trip to get rid of any smokey-funky camp smell - good as new! We never put our tent into a drybag (with our luck, it's wet half the time anyway) and we use heavier dry bags when kayak camping. If you're looking for lightweight pack liners, these are great and we haven't had any trouble with durability.

Love the 1L for cycling

I love the 1L Sea to Summit Ultra Sil dry bag. I bought it originally because I needed something to put my cell phone and some extra cash in while cycling. I can rest easy knowing my phone is protected from sweat in my jersey. Since these are so lightweight, you aren't going to notice it at all. When I'm on the bike I don't clip the top since I don't need it to be completely waterproof, but I've also tested it in other situations with the roll top closed and can attest to the fact that this bag will not leak if fully submursed in water.

Since I had such a great experience with the 1L, I've started using these bags more frequently. I use the 1L to protect my point and shoot camera whenever there's a threat of rain or when I might drop it in the water. I plan to buy a larger one to keep my SLR safe as well.

Whether I am flyfishing, going on a day hike, backpacking, canoeing, or snowshoeing, I pack everything I need dry in this. I believe it works better than a pack cover in most circumstances, especially flyfishing because I can't find a pack cover that would do a better job than this bag. I simply stuff anything I need to keep dry inside. For backpacking I can fit all my cloths and sleeping bag inside, and not have to worry about them getting wet if it starts raining, or I happen to fall into the river.
It is also very durable and well stitched and seamed. I would highly recommend this. It has lasted several years with no signs of wear and tear.

Great Lightweight bag

This is a great product from sea to summit. Understand that these are NOT submersable bags and if you submerse them they will not keep your stuff dry. That being said, I store my papers (drivers liscense, pass port, cell phone, gps, etc) in this bag in the brain of my pack and it performs without a hitch. My cards did put a small tear in the side of the bag but a little seam grip fixed it right up. With lightweight gear, you are paying for leight weight not for durability. If you want something to sit in the bottom a raft, get the heavier vinyl or heavy rip stop, you're on a boat weight doesnt matter.

Very Useful!

I am a long distance hiker and find these ultra light roll top dry sacks quite useful for keeping things dry, compacted, and organized inside my backpack. I bought several sizes, including a large one that can serve as a pack liner to help keep everything dry in case of rain--combined with an exterior pack cover, the pack and contents stay dry. This thinner version is so light, the weight impact is practically nothing-- I am counting tenths of ounces---I have problem ankles and knees and have to be really careful with the total weight, so every fraction of an ounce adds up for me. I really like this product and have found it very useful.

Great waterproof food sack

Bought a couple of these sacks to use as food hangers for overnight trips. They worked great at keeping the contents dry while hung in an open clearing in the rain all night, for multiple nights. The closure mechanism even forms its own loop for hanging or clipping onto a rope. Added almost no weight to my pack.

The only real downside is that it's hard to get air out of them for packing away. Being watertight also means not breathable fabric. You have to squeeze from the bottom up to the closure, so there's always some wasted space.

Awesome Possum!

These are designed for one thing only. To put stuff in to keep it waterproof in a backpack while in the back country where every ounce counts. I would not use them for anything rougher than that. That being said, these sacks rock. I've used them on three continents in a wide variety of conditions and never had one tear or leak. I keep my first aid kit in one and a small survival kit in another. Last time I checked there were no carabiners inside my backpack, so I don't really care if the d-ring is there or not.

I use these for everything! I recently went backpacking and everything went into a Sea to Summit dry sack. I used the 13L for my tent (Kelty Salida 2) and 8L for my sleeping bag, although after compressing it down in the bag, my tent ended up smaller than my sleeping bag! I've used various other sizes for other gear, clothes, and food. These are very thin (lightweight) but seem to be pretty durable and definitely kept everything dry during several days rain.

and5672597 at Backcountry.com on 08/14/2012

I used the 2L sack for the first time today on a kayaking trip. It kept everything dry as a bone even when it sat in a puddle for a few minutes.
It was the perfect size to carry two sets of keys, wallet and cell phone.
I probably won't continue to use it on the water, though, because the fabric is really lightweight and I don't have confidence it would stay waterproof if the boat flipped and it was completely submerged.

kept everything dry

got this as a gift and couldn't be more happy with it. i use it to pack my electronics (cameras, car keys, solar charger..) and some fire starters while i go day hiking and camping. I hike whenever i can so sometimes i get caught in some rain and it has always kept my gear dry. i dropped it in a pool at the bottom of a waterfall and no water got in. I roll it 4+ times.

Negative Reviews:

Loses more than weight by being thin.

I picked up two of these bags on the recommendation of a store employee. He recommended them over other dry bags because of how lightweight and thin they were. I packed a change of clothes and a jacket in this bag and then put it in my backpack. Also inside my backpack was a Camelback filled with ice and water, inside its own insulated, multi-fabric layer pouch. The condensation from the ice went through the thick lining of the pouch where my Camelback bladder was and through the material of this bag, finally stopping at my jacket. The dry sack was pretty wet on the outside, damp on the inside, and my jacket was slightly damp. Luckily my change of clothes was also wrapped up inside that jacket but stayed dry. Perhaps it was my fault for not gauging how much ice condensation would penetrate within my backpack. I am grateful though that I had my guidebook in another dry sack in another pocket of my backpack. Next time, I'll go for a thicker, more durable dry sack for the pocket that will be adjacent to my water source. I would still recommend this product for use inside a backpack, just keep it away from your water source.

Good for about a year, delicate use only

I have several of these bags in different sizes. I use them for medical kits, clothes and essential items that must be kept dry while hiking, backpacking and camping. I have exposed the bags to rain repeatedly, submerged them in a backpack for short periods during river crossings. The packaging warns that they are not meant to be submerged.

The good: incredibly light product, easy to use. Waterproof qualities were good against rain and submersion.

The bad:
Waterproofing qualities went away after about a year. Items in dry bags in my backpack got wet in rain. The tape at the bottom of the bag delaminated and pulled away from the fabric.

Bottom line: If you can afford to replace your gear often, these are great. I prefer somthing that lasts longer. I would not buy them again.

Bad reviews are true

Went kayaking and took this for the first and last time. It was great at first, held my granola bars, chaptick, tissue, and camera and it protected everything from the paddle splash and what not. My things were small not that sharp objects and next thing you know im taking out my camera and realizing its all wet and theres a tear on the bag, i had to duct tape it for the rest of the trip. I might as well have duct taped the entire bag. Im pretty disapointed so I bought the big river dry bag, pretty sure that'll be significantly better. Like everyone else said unless your storing this bag inside another bag and away from the world then i guess its usable but if not then dont waste your time.

Not waterproof

These bags are constructed out of silicon-impregnated nylon. Like silnylon tarps, they "weep" when in contact with water, even at a very low pressure. I.e. turn the bag inside out, fill it up with a few inches of water and watch it come through the fabric. Not a good feature on a dry sack. I use mine as a food bag now.

One is much better off biting the extra ounce or two and getting the PU-coated ones made by Sea To Summit. I've been very pleased with the eVac Sac version. The same little experiment on this one sees no water come through. It's amazing that a PU-coated sack with an eVent breathable bottom is more waterproof than these ultra-sil sacks.
James at SummitHut.com on 06/06/2009

No D-Ring

This product is perfectly waterproof and does its job fine. HOWEVER. It does not have a d-ring as its counterpart the Sea-to-Summit lightweight dry sack does. Its a decent piece of equipment but save yourself the time and money and go for the one with the d-ring. Its such a little thing that makes the bag so much better. If you are thinking you will attach your dry bag by clipping a caribener to the bag closure, don't. It causes the bag to pop open.
unshowered at REI on 06/06/2011

Not durable

I used this bag on two short backpacking trips to carry my tent, and one river tubing trip to carry small items like a camera and extra clothes. It was waterproof and worked great up until the point where tears rubbed into the bag at the closure where it folds over. I'm not sure how they can market this as durable for backpacking when I really wasn't that hard on it and it ripped so easily.
KBH at REI on 07/07/2013

Light weight but...

I'm wishing I would have went with the Ultra-Light instead of the Ultra-Sil. The material is just to thin for anything other than clothing. I had a few things stored in one and at the end of my trip noticed a wear spot from sliding it into the back of a kayak. Not a characteristic you want to have in a bag designed to keep things dry.
biwerw at REI on 07/07/2011

would not recommned

Used these one time and 2 out of 3 ripped. All we did was carry them on our pack. One had a therma rest and the other a tent. The tent poles were not even loose in the bag.
rene at REI on 05/05/2011

Nice and light, but fabric too fragile

Loved how lightweight this was, and got my hopes up. Like others, found the fabric tore too easily. And THAT is not waterproof! Would also agree, having the D ring is a nice feature that this bag lacks.

Neutral Reviews:

Not totally waterproof

I bought this bag as a lightweight bear bag, hung on a bear pole every night, for backpacking. It did great for that use. We experienced lots of rain and this bag kept our stuff dry. HOWEVER, I then used it on a white water rafting trip and although I folded the top over carefully 4 times, EVERYTHING in the bag got soaked. The bag sat on the bottom of the raft in 1-3" of water (as rafts are wont to accumulate in white water), and just soaked it up. Very embarassing as several boat-mates had put their lunches in my awesome lightweight DRY bag!! Great for backpacking. Terrible for rafting. Tip: test your bag at home in a sink or tub before using it.
EcoTyro at REI on 08/08/2011

Not waterproof if submurged

Note the mfg indicates not waterproof if submerged. I am glad I tested this before heading out on my trip. We will be canoeing and I expect our packs to be sitting in several incehs of water all day, and I was going to use this as my sleeping bag cover. I would use this to hold much of my gear that is higher in the pack and could get a little wet, but this is not sufficient in my opinion for sleeping bag protection. Go with heavier weight and better protection for sleeping bags. I believe this would be good if the pack was only exposed to some rain.
Kevin at SummitHut.com on 05/05/2011

Got a hole in it the first use

Bought two of these to put ziplocks with my dog's kibble into it for backpacking. I really liked how light-weight the bags are and they did a great job, until I realized on the second day of our backpacking trip that one of the bags got a hole in it. I'll give it another try to see if it was a fluke.
Moarla at REI on 09/09/2012

I ordered the 1 liter size, and discovered that the volume and dimensions listed refer to the bags open size, not its closed size. In the case of the 1 liter, once you roll the lid down its interior volume becomes more like 0.5 liter.

wanp293505 at Backcountry.com on 12/20/2012

Good for the SE

I use my ultra sil dry sacks for backpacking and have been pleased for the most part with their performance. The only problem I have experienced was from the lack of durability.
