I bought this as a winter jacket for my 12 year old son. I bought the same jacket 2 years ago for my older son as his winter jacket because it would block the wind and was not too bulky. The 2011 version has a higher collar and a chest pocket. It was roomy enough that he continues to wear it daily for the third winter season and it still looks great. The 2013 version is still nice and has a very soft chin area with the jacket zipped up all the way up. My son reports that it has kept him toasty warm on his bike rides to school or out playing in the snow. I chose the Windwall 1 over the 2 that is now available because of price since he is still growing. The arm length is made longer than the version from '11 but they roll up without being too bulky. Overall, my son is completely satisfied with the warmth and I am happy with the durability.
I am impressed with the capabilities of this jacket. I was able to use it for skiing with no shell on top and with 2 base layers underneath, one light and stretchy (polypropylene and elastic) and a second one a bit thicker made out of wool. All this at a temperature as low as ~5F (-15C) with a wind speed of 15 mph (24Km/h). We caught a day with heavy snowing and strong winds at altitudes above 10000ft (roughly 3000m). As the wind speed increased I had to put a shell on top of the jacket in order to keep myself warm.
I have found the size to fit me well and the size advisor on thenorthface.com to be very useful. For my height (6.3ft) and weight (195lbs) size L is a good fit.
I bought this jacket a few weeks ago to use as a layer underneath my shell while skiing and also as a mid-weight casual jacket and I think that it performs well for both. The fleece material is nice and soft and all zippers, pockets, and bungees function well. My only complaint is that the jacket seems a bit stiff. I think this might be due to the "windblocking" system they've put in which does work well. But I was a little surprised when I first picked it up and the inner membrane seems to crinkle.
Overall, a good quality and functional jacket which I will continue to enjoy wearing frequently!
I bought this for my teenage son, hoping that he would wear something other than just a hoodie. The weather has been very cold and he has been wearing it and loves it. It keeps him warm, some times he even says to warm. He also thinks the deep pockets are cool. I also ended up buying one for my husband who also thinks it's great. Now I am thinking of getting one for myself.
bought this as a gift for my husband. He loves it. It is warm, and not bulky. The fleece is way better than cheaper brands. Just looks better, and does not attract too much hair and fuz. (my blonde hair is always attracted to his clothes and this drives him nuts! It is never on this coat, which he finds to be a miracle!)
Gave it to a client and they loved it. It doesn't appear like it'd handle the wind well; it does. It gets very hot very quickly, so long as it's used appropriately. It's a great jacket for general activities and fantastic for fall hiking or good weather winter day hikes or just casual use. Good jacket!
I bought a Windwall in 2011, and accidently spilled bleach on it so I bought a new Windwall this year and was sincerely disappointed at how the quality has gone down. Don't get me wrong, it keeps me warmer than most other jackets and performs well on chilly evenings, but the quality of the jacket feels a little cheaper. The fleece is a little thinner and after being washed once it looks like I owned it for years, where as the older windwalls looked good after every wash. I'm still in search of the 2011 Windwalls.
