Outdoor Research Axcess Jacket Reviews:

Reviews:

I have had the OR Axcess for a little over a month now and so far it has preformed flawlessly. Gore-Tex is the best water proof fabric around, however even Gore-Tex can't breath fastest enough to keep up with heavy or strenuous work. That's where the Axcess ventilation system comes it. Most alpin jackets untilize "pit-zips" which in my opion are completely usless as the natural movement of your arms while skiing or snowbaording almost always covers them entirely. The forward facing vents on the Axcess jacket allow air circulation much, much better than traditional "pit zip" style vents. While I was hauling my kids and gear from my truck, to the rental shop, to the ticket windwo to the rope tow I had the vents open all the way and was extremely comfortable and dry inside the coat. It was awesome.
Another other well thought out feature of this jacket is the placement of the insulation. Rather that take up space and add weight by insulating the jacket entirely, OR has placed the Primaloft insutlation on the arms, back and under arms leaving the chest un-insulatied. The cuffs with the thumb drive are large enough to make pulling them down over your gloves or mittens, easy while you have one already on, and strap down tight. When using the thumb drive, I found that there was no restriction in the movement of the coat, for example when I leaned over to adjust my boot, as I feared there would be and I have found that I prefer this to other systems that are swen into the inside of the sleve. The hood is large enough for a helmet, but easy enough to cinch down over just my hat. And last but not least, that built in balicalva is really, really handy.
All in all it is a great jacket. I would recomend it to anyone.

best winter coat

Warmth is a pro and a con because until i got used to wearing a hardshell with some insulative value i wore too much underneath. Overall this coat is fantastic, it operates as a top notch hardshell, but provides a good amount of insulation. I didn't think i would use the balacalava, but it turns out to be a great bonus tucked away. The pit zips do not vent as well as the hem to bicep pit zip that is so genious with the OR rain jackets, but enough, and you can still acces inside pockets with a pack on. Finally powder skirts are a must droping the knee in deep pow, but it is a bonus to remove it just don't loose it.

This is a great jacket that is comfortable, warm, stylish, dry and technical. I have never been cold or gotten wet in it and it includes great features for example the built-in balaclava. I also like the bigger cuffs because it makes it easy to get over my gloves for full storm protection. The hood is great because it fits over my hood. The only problem I have had, which doesn't happen often is that the zipper gets stuck sometimes. One last thing is that you can also use this jacket as a raincoat.

Skied with the 2012 model this past season and I love it. Great waterproofing, clean and cool styling, good colors, very comfortable, and also includes sweat features like a built-in balaclava, pit zips and good pocket placement. Also hood works well with helmet.
