Outdoor Research Stormbound Jacket Reviews:

Positive Reviews:

After a long search, I finally found the ski jacket I was looking for. I thought the Patagonia Powder Bowl was going to be the answer, but it ended up having some serious functional flaws. On the other hand, this OR jacket seems to have been designed with functional requirements in mind.
1) the shell is adaptive and moves well with your body
2) the hood fits over my RED Avid helmet easily, allows me to zip up the collar, and provides a bit of head movement
3) has all the usual tech: fully taped seams, water resistant zippers, down, removable powder skirt, etc.
4) bonus: removable built-in balaclava
5) seems like it's configured to allow you to "batten down the hatches" on a cold snowy day, or stay cool on a warm day if you just wear a base-layer, unzip everything, and remove components (balaclava, snow skirt)
In my opinion the jacket has a great cut. It doesn't pull on my shoulders, but still conforms to my frame. It's also very cozy; I feel like I'm wearing a hoodie. I tried the grey color on and liked it, but ended up getting the blue instead.
As I was reading jacket reviews for Outdoor Research, Patagonia, Mountain Hardware, etc., I found this criteria from a reviewer on the Patagonia site: I want to "put [the jacket] on and forget that I am wearing it". The Stormbound jacket meets this requirement 100% and remains fully functional, so I highly recommend it.
5'11" 145lbs with broad shoulders: size small (medium was too baggy, small is just right)

I've used this jacket for two seasons and I am very happy with the performance. This jacket has kept me toasty in some very extreme lows, and has stayed dry through cold rainstorms and blizzards. I have yet to have this jacket fail me. The pullout balaclava is clutch. That thing has been there to save my neck (literally) many times. The jacket is very light and can pack very tight. The outer shell is very rugged and has handled some pretty nasty crashes.
What I dislike about the jacket is the overall fit. Since its down, it feels bulky sometimes. Also, the pit zips use tiny zippers so they are difficult to open or close solo. The pass holder is kinda pointless- if you put your pass in it, you have to open the jacket to retrieve. Also, the elastic is so short, you can barely pull the thing out. It would be nicer if they used a downward facing pocket with a pull tab. Also, the hood does not fit well over my POC helmet, a little more height would be nice, although I only use the hood on the really nasty days.
The best part of this jacket it the infinity guarantee: No questions asked returns thru the company for the life of the jacket. Great peace of mind there. Overall, a great jacket, and my go to layer when weather gets nasty.

I bought this jacket 4 months ago. Since then I've stayed perfectly warm in -5F w/ windchill with only a base layer and this jacket. I've also stayed comfortable working outside on sunny 35 days. (thanks to the pit zips) The waterproofing has worked great and I've had no issues with getting wet, even after washing the jacket.
Pros: Warm, waterproof, comfortable, SUPER light weight, looks great, hood and arms are down filled.
Cons: Pit zips are a little difficult to open without help, there's no mesh in pit zips, they're just wide open,You can feel the pull out balaclava inside the jacket when sitting in a chair (not horrible but it's there), every once in a while I find a feather that got out.
Best jacket I've owned by far.

This jacket is a fully featured snowsports tank. It has an insulated hood, built in balaclava, removable powder skirt, recco, and pockets up the wazoo.
I was expecting it to be a little bit warmer when I ordered it, than it actually is, but once you are moving it's pretty perfect. If you're always cold like me, I would probably wear a mid layer underneath, when you're less than mobile.
Fits pretty standard to other OR jackets, with room to layer underneath.

Neutral Reviews:

I picked this jacket because it has the tech features of a nice, quality ski jacket but also has down on the inside to keep me warm! I ordered the black one thinking I was getting a solid black color, and when I received it I was pleasantly surprised that it looks like a really dark grey with hints of black. It looks really good.
The hood has a small bill on it for those wondering. Something I am not overly fond of because they always seem to get bent out of shape.
I am 5'10", 160 pounds and the medium was too big. It was long in the back and pretty full in the mid-section which could have something to do with the "relaxed fit." I sent it back and I am still in search of a great ski jacket. I may come back to this one in a small in the future.
